So I am obsessed with gymnastics and the Gymnastics World Championships is starting.
The women have been engaged in their days of practice sessions and some pictures have been posted.

When this picture was posted, it got a comment that kind of "popped" me.

When I saw the picture I thought, don't like the extra color but cool natural sista (gymnast from Great Britain).

I then read a post about the picture.

"I want somebody to get that British girl in the middle a texturizer, hot comb, or relaxer for her head STAT! "

I was like what the h@ll!
Okay, her hair isn't neat and tidy but she's at practice.

Took me a little while before I could respond. All I could say was...
Wow

Just Wow

SMDH

It just reinforces my perception that we are the most critical about our natural hair.

The Anglo people on the board that responded were much more accepting and these people, in general, can be the rudest, most offensive people on earth.
Their responses were...

"Do you mean Danusia Francis? Aw, I like her wild hair! I like the contrast between her long elegant neck, the glamorous eyelashes and then the completely uncombed or unstyled hair. It's very high fashion."

"^^^ITA. And have you seen her gymnastics? She's easily the most artistic, aesthetically pleasing member of their whole team!"

"I agree. I've actually always been jealous of wild curls like that. "

I just had to vent.

I really can't blame them...she looks like she just rolled out of bed from a long nights sleep. The color is horrible and makes her hair look dull and damaged.

Everybody is not going to like natural hair just cuz it's natural. You still have to make an effort to look presentable. She put on makeup but, didn't "do" her hair.

Well, my point is she is at a practice. I personally do not like the color but she has her hair in a simple ponytail. She's running around, flipping, jumping, etc at a practice. Her hair is not going to stay pristine perfect with all that activity. Her hair does not need to be pasted/glued down/shellacked for a practice session.
Also there is a big difference between she could neaten her hair up and the comment that was made.

I would give her a pass at practice. Poor girl has to do uparallel bars (or whatever other strenuous exercise) all day AND worry about her hair on top of that? lol

If this was a televised competition or somethin... yeah, I'd agree with you. :)

I personally give her a pass as well...no one relaxed or natural is going to look their absolute best at all times, especially at an athletic practice.

But I also think you can't really fault people for seeing you an an off day and thinking that you look...Off. We wouldn't have known she was at a practice if the op had not told us.

Do gymnasts usually practice in a full face of make-up? It looks like she is wearing false eye-lashes as well...I'm saying this because, if she took the time to do all of that yet her hair wasn't important then I take back my pass.

I've seen plenty of girls workout with make up on. Don't know why. It's silly in my opinion, but they do it.

That's true, I wouldn't have known if no one said she was at practice.

but still... I do know at least she may not have thought of this as a special event. I know gymnasts practice for hours a day too a lot of the time. My hair would look a lot worse than hers (and I could possibly have a stroke at 25 years old) after even 20 mins of anything high intensity like that.

I'm a make up noob... I wouldn't know if she had make up on. i thought that was just how she looks lol

practice or no practice, she should not come out of her house, dorm room looking like that. sheesh
a lil water and brush cuddnt hurt

Well, I doubt her hair started out looking the way it does.
I know if mine were that short and in a pony and I had been practicing all day, I would get fly-aways.

I don't follow the British team but here are some vids of her. It appears that she has always been natural but usually has longer hair.

New comment on the gymnastics board
"I think she is beautiful."

edited to add new comment:
"I feel the same about Mattie. I actually liked the curlier/wavier ponytail she rocked at CG Klassik's more than the straightened look she had at nationals. Her sassy hair at Klassiks matched her attitude and it looked lovely!

But whatever. They're gorgeous girls and they can wear their hair however they like. Actually, I wish I looked like either one of them"

Why, though? If she's in the middle of doing something strenuous, why does her hair have to look good? Honest question.

notice I said should not leave her house looking like that. If during practice her hair became dishevled, then I guess its OK. Maybe this pic was taken after she had a few tumbles off the high beam I dunno.

I still stand by my statement- I rlly hope she didnt START OUT the day with her hair looking like that.

I mean I did track in prep school and badminton in highschool and trust I atleast combed my hair before parctice

then again, I went to a catholic HS and we got detentions for unkempt hair so maybe Im a bit biased

Right now they are in the middle of podium training. They are doing full routines and minimal corrections in front of the judges. The teams are all in uniform for podium training. She needed to be more presentable than that! And you do not have to fry your hair to get it into a presentable style. Betty Okino frequently wore her hair natural during competitions and she managed to look presentable.

I used to be a competitive gymnast, and like many have echoed, she is at practice. Regardless of if her hair was perfectly styled at the beginning of workout, there is no way that she would exit the gym with it that way. Between running, sweating, missing skills and having to roll out of them, she would be a d@mn fool to waste her time and efforts (esp if she intends to use heat) to be deemed "socially acceptable" or "presentable"

Yes, they are at podium training but training is training.
Also, Betty's hair was never that short.

I do not see a difference between Chelsea's or Bridget's fly-aways and her's. Their hair is simply not as thick or kinky. When you are that active, you will have fly-aways.

I don't see anyone saying they are not presentable. If kinky hair was sticking out like Bridget's (2nd picture), people would crucify the gymnast.

I did competitive gymnastics growing up too and my hair was a sweaty mess after I left practice. We would practice 4 hours a day so you can just imagine what effect that could have on your hair.

A little off topic...looking at the videos someone posted of her...I really like how she grew into her body as compared to the tapes of her when she was younger. She definitely looks more graceful, has longer lines, and looks more controlled with the skills she's doing.

Exactly. The same thing that happen in celeb children threads. Let a hair be out of place on a kinky haired child and it hasn't been cared for, or the parents didn't bother to do anything with it.

I love gymnastics, never did it because I am a bit tall but I can understand as an athlete. It pisses me off to hear people critique an ATHLETE's hair. Not a model or a movie star but an athlete. Even in gymnastics where there is presentation and beauty it is impossible to remain flawless while competing and sweating and being human...

I agree. I'm sure back in the day, Dominique Dawes showed up at the gym slicked down and walked out w/ hair all over. She was bringing home the golds, forget everything else!
