I think I'm done with this. One of Kimmaytube's video's reminded me how I was always so against this. It was one of those things that I started doing because everyone else was doing it.

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it, it's just something that I don't think I will continue doing because I was always against it (even before hair boards) so there must've been reason for it. This means I will have to give up my beloved Lustrasilk Cholesterol which gives me the perfect wash n' go everytime. :(

Anyway she says she NEVER uses rinse out's as leave-in's because they can cause build-up and breakage. The build-up I don't care about but I don't need anything that could give me unnecessary breakage.

This isn't the first time I've heard not to do this so I'll take it as a sign.

I'm still using it :) Lustrasilk forever!

Even though I watch kimmay all the time. lol

The main difference between most leave ins and conditioners is that leave ins tend to be lighter (less concentrated)

i totally agree!
but i do see wonderful resultS on both sides
i never left conditioner in until HAIR BOARDS
I REALLY HOPE MY CHOICE TO MIX KIMMAY'S LEAVE IN WITH AOHR WILL BE A GOOD ONE... I MAY ADD DISTILLED WATER (BEEN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE MYSELF ALOT LATELY)

You've read my mind. I didn't read anything about this I've just realized I've been stuck at this near WL length and wondering what's been different and I had an ah-ha moment! I was actually thinking about this last night and decided to go back to what I was doing when I was transitioning and newly natural.

As soon as I go back to my curls next week I'm going to go back to Giovanni Direct Leave in and my Sunsilk leave in's and trying to use lighter-weight conditioners.

Do what's best for you Pokahontas. Everyone's hair is different. Leaving regular conditioner in my hair is the best thing I have ever done for my hair. I've been leaving regular conditioner in my hair since 2007 and my hair has grown and retained a lot of length. My hair is thick with thick coarse strands though. Leave in conditioner is too light for me but I'm sure it works great for those with finer hair.

I know right!!! Totally my HG wash n' go product. I get great curls never fail. I'm not sure I can give this up.:nono:

I think that texture plays a part too. :yep:

I also have very coarse hair for the most part. Leaving actual conditioner in works best for me.

Conditioner is my moisturizer of choice when doing buns and twistouts, I think its fantastic!

I think it comes down to your hair's own reaction to it. Have u experienced more breakage? If not, I don't think u should give up something you love just because it doesn't work for someone else.

Conditioners and I are forever
If she is worried about buildup, she should clarify
Using conditioner as a leave-in has saved me from breakage
BTW, you were the one who started me on Lustrasilk.
Thank You!!!!!!!

I remember trying leaving ins during my transition and they were just too light. Teri from www.tightlycurly.com is another person that has thrived with using regular conditioner as a leave in. I think the book Curly Girl recommended using regular conditioner as a leave in too. Regualar conditioners are way more moisturing for me. Putting a leave in conditioner in my hair is just like using plain water...

I've grown my hair out from bra strap to my current pants pocket length by doing this. Conditioner is my only hair product and moisturizer. I use a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil during the cooler months but that's it. Conditioner only for me. But this works for me. Everyone is different.

Yep it does cause breakage I did it with suave apple two times and it gave me breakage you would think THAT was enough. I tried it again with tightly curly and hello hydration and I had build up. For some build up isn't an issue but if you have a touchy scalp it can mess with your hair growth by clogging follicles EVEN if I wash with a sulfate. So I'm NOT giving up. If you use a conditioner WITHOUT cones that sometimes block out moisture it should be okay to leave it in. So I'm trying no cone and just using my remainder of HH as a prepoo.

I'm gonna try her leave-in as well. It got rave reviews. I really hope I still have some aloe vera juice, got everything else.

Totally forgot about Sunsilk leave-in, that used to work well for me.

My hair is fine so I have to be more careful ya know. It may be totally fine for those with normal strands, I dunno. I feel that my strands are extra delicate and I do get breakage which i know is normal but I just want to do anything I can to prevent it. I'm not sure if these conditioners are causing me any extra breakage or not, it's hard to tell. I did do a blog a while ago because I thought they were giving me splits (more than normal).

Well it's not just that...it's something I've always been against so I guess it's ingrained in my brain as being bad. I have been getting breakage, to me a little more than normal.

Also, rinse-outs don't seem to be moisturizing for me at all. They leave my hair a little firm which is the reason I was using them as a styling product.

This is one of those "Teachable Moments" where Listening to your Hair is Invaluable.:yep:

IK for me personally, my hair would not/could not 'tolerate' using Conditioner as a leave-in. It's already too weak/fragile. And I think personally, for me, it would cause me problems.:perplexed

I prefer creamy leave-ins. Some are heavier than others, but they currently work well on my hair and I have a good assortment of those to choose from.

To me, it is one of those things where knowing your own hair and what it can & cannot tolerate will heap benefits. e.g. heat/no heat, stretching/no stretching, combing brushing/no combing & brushing, protein/no protein..........etc.....

Personal preferences:yep:

Do what is best. :yep: If you feel that regular conditioner may be causing breakage then do try a leave in instead. I hate breakage too and I try my hardest to prevent it as much as possible. Splits are no fun either. I see where you're coming from. Your hair is gorgeous. Find what's best for you. I'm a big fan of the conditioner only method but I admit it's not for everyone. Good luck!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It's working for you! Your hair looks so pretty :)

this x1000000!!!!!!

if you're getting results with this stuff then let your reggie be. however if its something new and since doing it you have stopped seeing results, then go back to what got you to where you are.

that's what i keep having to tell the pj and bandwagon jumper in me everyday lol

i have to keep doing what got me to wl and beyond and part of that is using HE HH as a leave in. while my hair does respond to HE LTR l/i, it responds better to straight conditioner.

all of our heads are indivedual and we have to remember what works for some (and sometimes it seems like it works for everyone but us) doesnt work for everyone

Yes and I think maybe strand size does as well. Someone with normal strands may not have the same problems.

I've read that fine/thin strands must be treated very carefully. My thick coarse strands can take more of a beating before falling apart. Since your hair is so fine a leave may be best. It's possible that the regular conditioner is too much for your hair and is causing buildup and breakage.

Im in the same boat as you. I have fine and medium strands. Im noticing more splits and breakage as well since starting with this.

Its hard though cause I dont wanna stop. :look: I like the results I get with leaving the con in. I wonder if this can be helped with simply incorporating more protein or should leaving con in be nixed all together.

I just plucked a couple strands from different areas of my head. Then looked at how thick they were.

But heres a little more help:
Pull out a single hair.

Put it against a piece of white paper. This way you will identify your hair type much easier.

Fine hair is difficult to see and not easily felt between the fingers.

Medium hair is easily seen against the white paper, but it will not feel wiry between the fingers.

Coarse hair will be very visible against the white paper. It will feel quite wiry between the fingers.

The only problem I could see is causing Build up and/or over conditioning and if you don't use something with sulfates it won't strip the build up as much. Not allowing you to get the best benefit form your conditioners. If your watering down your regular Conditioner and using it, that is basically what we did back in the days before people got hip to Leave ins, just like CO Washing before people got hip to co washing we used regular Conditioner now there is Hair One and Wen. :)

i guess i have medium hair then...

when i pluck a hair it looks like it would be coarse, like it looks super thick and wiry, but you can barely feel it between your fingers.

i think the particular conditioners we choose to leave in or wash out may affect more of the breakage issue......some conditioners are watery anyway, some i actually thin with distilled water. Your hair is gawgus sis
Elucence says use as both, kinda thin
some conditioners may have ingredients that are too strong for extended usage; (reasonable thinking) I'm like..... if it says 2 minutes, perhaps 2-3 days will do more harm than good!

I would also think those with cones, sulfates (a few conditioners), HIGHER ALCOHOL CONTENT, are some that would be less wise for us to leave in!
I think you're on to something Pokahontas...... i will need to research a bit more on which conditioners are lower in certain ingredients.... thus more tolerable in longer periods, whilst others may have ingredients best for short term application

^^^ exactly you can make them as thin as needed :) so your favorite Conditioner can be your favorite leave in just water down a bit to your liking :D

DOn't fret Pok if you've been doing it your hair is Gorgeous and if it isn't broke don't fix it! Just clarify if you notice build up :)

I still do not understand how conditioner is going to cause anyone breakage or splits unless the one you are using dries your hair out and then that would mean it is not the brand for you.
In regards to splits and breakage, I would be more concerned about what I am combing my hair with, how I am combing my hair, the amount of heat I am using, if I am using a brush on my hair, etc.

I sometimes don't rinse out the conditioner out of my hair or if I do completely rinse out conditioner, I'll add a little regular conditioner to my hair. It works for me especially since I keep my hair braided so my hair is moisturized & less manipulation to my hair.
If I feel I have too much build-up I'm quick to shampoo to remove the build up. Also I NEVER use a protein base conditioner as a leave-in cuz that will cause breakage.

I have a bit of Aussie Moist in my hair right now with EVOO. Unless I noticed breakage, I will keep using regular conditioner as a leave-in. I got the tip from Teri as well.
