She didn't give much info on "how" sulfates work "differently" .... naw, I'm good. I have one sulfate shampoo that I use diluted and I'm good with that. The only other thing I could think of is the heavy cones they use to supplement the drying effect of the sulfates.

But the blogger had pretty shiny hair.

Re: According to Pantene, Sulfates Work Differently In the Hair When Combined w/ Othe

<shrugs> I've used no-sulfate shampoos that were crap - left my hair a dry, tangled, mess, and I've used good shampoos that contain sulfates that work very well. My staple shampoos do contain sulfates and if they didn't work for me I wouldn't have been using them for over 5 years. Finding a good shampoo is not as simple as looking for a label that says "no sulfates". There are too many people who are not knowledgeable about hair or biochemistry in on this discourse who pick up "sulfates" and "bad" on the internet and run with it without stopping to think that there's far more to the equation than that. Many things that are poison in certain doses are perfectly safe and even beneficial in lower doses. With that said I don't use Pantene but it's the biggest selling shampoo in the world with buzzillions of repeat customers and product line loyalists. One of my former coworkers used pantene shampoo and conditioner daily and her hair was almost waist length, curly, so it obviously works fine for some people.

SO TRUE ^^^ I went through a few "no sulfate" shampoos before finding ones that were decent. I don't think sulfates are evil - I do think the whole formulation must be considered.

That low sulfate Tres. shampoo has some other ingred. I'm not pleased with so I took a pass.

BUT - honestly that those new Suave Prof. (Almond/shea) shamp/cond. are pretty good.

My Creme of Nature has a sulfate and it is awesome!

Also took a peek at the blogger's page referenced above. For example in her care routine she says she uses the L'Oreal no-sulfate shampoo. She has pretty hair, and so I guess it's working for her. I've tried the same shampoo and conditioner and absolutely hated it ... because it turned my hair into pot scrubber. No big surprise because her hair is different from mine. She seems to be a type 3 something and I'm 4b - maybe 4b+. So my point is different things work for different people ... and it's not just about going "no sulfate" because you read it someplace. Take your own hair type into consideration, test things out and see for yourself.

of course the senior scientist would say that...anything to protect her interests. this reminds me of that commercial that said high fructose corn syrup was good for you...from the farmers of America  still gets me everytime

It wasn't that sulfates dried my hair. One of the most moisturizing shampoos (which was actually the pantene women of color shampoo for dry scalp) was lovely for my hair. My scalp? Not so much.

I don't think sulfates are evil, just depends on your hair. But I'm skeptical about the whole idea of sulfates working differently w/ other products. I think some ingredients can counteract the dryness that can caused by sulfates. Something like glycerin or natural oils.

Yeah she was pretty vague. She also said that they tested the curly line on various types of hair. I wonder if natural type 4 hair was included in that. Probably not.

I can believe it, sodium hydroxide also works differently when combined with different ingredients. I think everyone just has to find what works for them. Sulfate's never hurt me, frankly my hair was thriving while I used them. I'm curious to see how my hair reacts to a non-sulfate shampoo but even now I'm happy with the little harsh detergent in my current shampoo. Since I condition my hair after shampooing I'm not really worried.
