I don't know how much wigs/weaves cost, but if your scarves are more expensive there's a good chance you're not wearing do-rags. I don't have any problem with a pretty scarf. It's when it's stained, has holes and is tattered and torn that makes a person look homeless.

I choose not to look homeless. lol. I think that's a basic rule of life, don't look homeless. But people can do what they want.

i've only gone out in du rags twice.... both times were on purpose, i was much younger, and they were pink matched with a fitted ball cap (yeah i probably looked a little dykie but ummm, we'll just pretend those pictures dont exist lol).

i only do the silk scarves (not even bonnets)... so i'm not looking too crazy i totally get what you mean though

BUT!!!! i do have to comb, well at least brush for a bun or pony or i'll have a poofy halo going and that looks way worse than my scarves lmao

I guess I just try not to judge other people because I truly never know what their home situation or life in general entails....People hide a lot of things under wigs, scarves, do-rags etc...including the fact that they may be homeless or have no hair...and maybe they can't afford anything else who really knows...


But I understand what you guys are saying...I just truly don't care what people wear enough to let it bother me what they look like...maybe if it was a friend or family member and we were going shopping together I would think differently

Well I live in Ann Arbor and I can walk to Kroger in 7 minutes....and you'll never be more than a 15 min drive from Kroger, Target, Meijers, or Walmart out here....in Detroit, there are some hood arab-owned grocery stores all over the place...one at the corner of my street but all the Krogers are in the burbs....even still a 10 min drive from my house. I don't know what I would do if it was a 30 min drive....I don't even see how that's HUMANE! Ann Arbor is 45 minutes from Detroit and I'm sure I pass a thousand grocery stores on the way lol

Not humane lol. Well, the closest convenience store is like 5 mins away by car. And the closest grocery store is like 25 mins by car, but the one I like to shop at is 30 mins away, but in the other direction. There are like 4 or 5 different ones that are close by, but they're all 30 mins away and you have to take the freeway.

It's not as bad as it sounds because I have to pass them from practically anywhere I go, so it's not like I have to drive 30 mins out of my way just to go to the grocery store. There are plenty of grocery stores close by everywhere, but just not close to my house.

I'm sure there are plenty of 7-11s and quickie marts in between, but I've never really paid attention since I don't really like to go there.

The closest Walmart is about 15-20 min away, and I don't think we have Kroger here.

7 mins walking distance from a grocery store? That's like a dream come true. lol

I have scarves that are designated for outdoor use and scarves meant for indoors only. There is a difference in fabric, prints, quality. I use them the way some people use hats. However, I don't like seeing ladies trying to rock those cheap polyester scarves (2-3 dollars at the bss) that are clearly meant for sleeping in like it's part of an outfit.

What I don't understand is why people can't plan their day. I mean, they don't wear their do-rag or sleep cap to work do they? Why don't they stop off at the grocery store on the way home? That's what I do and what most everyone else does too considering most everyone there is in their suits or business wear.

I don't understand going home, changing clothes, putting on a do-rag, encountering a culinary emergency that absolutely requires a trip to the store, and leaving with the do-rag on. lol That has never happened to me.

I don't get why a ponytail won't suffice? It takes 10 seconds to pull hair into a ponytail. That's too much effort? Entirely too much to go through? I don't put on my scarf until right before I go to bed, but I don't see why people can't put their hair in a ponytail/bun when plans change and they need to leave unexpectedly.

....yeah, again I agree with everything you said. It takes me about a minute to at least do a ponytail. Today I went out for a small run to buy water, a snack, and some midol, and I felt like crap but I still put my hair up in an ok-looking bun and then slapped a headband on....took me 2 minutes! lol.

Actually, this is so true! I never go out in anything too dressed down, I almost always have jeans on except for a few drive-thru runs, but I swear I can be looking so dressed down (my kind of dressed down, anyways, not PJ/head scarf dressed down), and it's those days I'm getting hit on! Not the day I actually make an effort to look cute and wear something I just bought.....noooooo, it's when I have old jeans, old shoes, and a t-shirt. WTF LOL.

I'm in the camp with the "no it doesn't bother me" people. I wear a satin bonnet to drop off my son to school sometimes (in the car), I wear a scarf almost daily in the car on the way to school/work if I need to lay my edges down, and occasionally I've worn a doo-rag or scarf in the gym to workout or into school if it was raining. I always wear something on my head when jogging outside.

During 1L final exams, when we were in the library almost 24/7, everybody's hair was wrapped up. IDK, but I look good whether my hair is combed or wrapped up *shrugs* But, I do see what you guys are saying.

All of the wraps/bonnets I wear out are black satin - but I was thinking about buying a wrap from this site http://www.prettywrap.com/ - it's made of silk.

The Pretty Wrap can be worn during the day too! If you need to make a quick run to the store, but have no time to style your hair, just slip it on and go!

My hair would look embarrassing in a ponytail. I'm at the start of my haircare journey and while things are certainly improving it's not the best situation. If I had to choose between not going out in a bonnet to get a necessary item and letting folks judge based on that or going out and taking 10-20 minutes to style my hair to avoid looks, I'll take the hit. I make the effort for work, school, visiting friends and family and going anyplace respectable. Once I'm done, at home and it gets mussed and something comes up...it's a wrap for the day, lol. Bonnet on and do what I have to do. It's not about what someone wears or how they look but how they act for me.

Thus why I also agree with this:

I can't say it's about home-training or what kind of person someone is. For a very long time I stressed about my appearance and went to extra lengths to always be presentable till I realized odds are the people judging me were no better than me. We all just have different styles, levels of comfort, and concerns. At the end of the day it's not serious, life goes on.


Ps. I also choose not to wear slippers or look ratty do I get some points???

I know OP was talking about "sleep caps" but I remember my grandmother covering her hair with the wraps like the ones above until the day she passed.

The more I think about it, it was always ok for women in my family to cover their heads if their hair was not presentable. My mom started me out early - I remember wearing little bonnets like this when I was a toddler/little girl and my hair was not done:
