What she ^^ said. I comb my hair every 6 weeks to 3 months. I usually keep it in box braids under a wig so I only comb it to detangle when I take my braids down.

I comb my hair whenever I FEEL like it, but at least once per day. Sometimes maybe 3 or 4 times, depending on what I'm doing and where I'm going.

I can't get down with the whole "fear factor" that seems to permeate the forum - afraid to comb, afraid to blowdry, afraid to flatiron - why the heck have long hair if you have to be afraid to touch it? I touch it all day, every day and I'm not ashamed.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just in from the Cavs game, I'm overly excited and can't sleep, lol!

I am lazy and tender-headed.

I voted: I never comb my hair

Currently I use the Goody Styling Therapy Jojoba Brush to detangle 1x a week on wash day only

It's the most gentle detangling tool I've used thus far that gets rid of shed hair without ripping out my hair! :yep:

when my hair is out, once a week when i co-wash.
when in braids, about every 2 months, when i take them out and re-do.

I detangle in the shower once or twice a week. Usually once.

I use a shower comb with Extra wide teeth and my fingers.

I have been PS'ing with braids/wigs since the new year began. I comb my hair every few weeks, when I am changing up the style which requires a wash and DC.

I usually have my hair in twists. So I comb and brush every two weeks to detangle and get shed hair out.

For many people here, it's not a about fear. For some of us, there is just no need to comb frequently. In addition, there are many ways to style one's hair w/o heat and still look fly and polished. If it works for you, great! I don't see how or why one would feel ashamed or state that they're not ashamed. There are many paths one can follow to achieve their hair goals and that's evident in the responses in this thread and the forum overall. Just because folks have their own way of doing their hair it doesn't mean they fear their hair.

A lot  I comb and/or brush every day, more than once. I have a whole slew of combs for different purposes. I have the famed Jilbere shower comb, a big Mebco for when I get out of the shower, a pack of 10 pretend :giggle: bone combs of various widths for finer detangling and styling (I keep one of them in my purse), and a fine toothed carbon comb for the comb chase method when flat ironing.

Very rarely. I haven't combed my hair in over a year.

OK, I'm in braids and have been in them for that period of time. I don't need a comb to redo my braids or even part my hair when I decided to change the parting. Finger combing serves me well.

I comb my hair everyday. If I'm wearing a bun I have to redo it daily. If I don't comb it out it gets all tangled. :(

My sentiments exactly! There's no way I can bun on the regular without combing everyday. I get knots and tangles everywhere, and I redo my buns daily as well. Your hair is very long and beautiful, so it's nice to know that one can still comb daily and achieve length. What kind of comb do you use?

I am amazed that almost 40% of people here comb their hair every day. How do all of you retain length?

Yeah, I didn't realize that there were that many people on this thread that combed daily. I felt that it was a hard core rule here only to comb on wash-days. I tried that, and I personally don't favor it, so it's comforting to know I'm in good company. In my opinion, much depends on the type of comb used. Generally, I notice people retain length more when they groom with wide-toothed combs and/or seamless combs.

When my hair is straightened I comb once a day...if its in a natural "out" style then only on wash day....but lately since I've been wearing my long term protective styles.....I comb once a month:yep:

Now that I have my mini twists in, every coupla days I'll comb out my loose coils to make sure I dont end up with ssk's.

When wearing my hair natural I comb on wash days. If straighten maybe once every other day. I use a wide tooth comb and a smaller tooth comb (not that small) to remove shed hairs.

I didn't mean people are afraid of their own hair, but afraid that anything they do to it will result in a horrible set-back. I'm referring to the fact that no/low manipulation seems to be the only thing I hear over and over again. People get defensive if you suggest anything other than that method of growing hair.

I hardly see any threads about ENJOYING our hair. If I didn't know anything about natural hair before joining LHCF, I would probably be discouraged and I certainly wouldn't attempt a 2-year transition. If I was lurking and I wasn't Black, I'd probably think that afro hair must be quite a pain in the neck. It just seems that way to me.

People can, and do, whatever they want with their hair, obviously. But the lack of threads concerning styling - other than protective styles just don't seem plentiful, which seems weird to me. I'm learning disabled when it comes to styles, lol.

I was only expressing my opinion that hair goals CAN be met and you can grow out your hair WHILE fully enjoying/exploring it. I was not trying to start anything with anyone. The "I am not ashamed" part was just levity, apparently it didn't work.

I use a seamless comb. It makes a huge difference. No more snapping of my ends!!!

Wow Nonie - i love the idea of that but my hair tangles soooo easily. If i don't comb every day i will be punished with dry tangly hair. Why why why does this happen? Any tips/ideas?

Only on wash days. I do need to be more consistent because my hair tangles badly but I dont like the manipulation.

My hair tangles badly, too, especially since I wear buns and styles where my hair is tucked away a lot. Currently I comb daily. When my hair is freshly relaxed/when I don't have any NG I like using my horn comb (the teeth are regular). Leaves my hair smooth and I get very little breakage, if any. I can't use it when I have NG, though, so I use my wide-toothed Jilbere shower comb, and that seems to work nicely.

P.S. Wow, I just checked the poll and it seems like just as many people groom their hair daily as there are people who only comb on wash days :drunk:.

I use my fingers to detangle and only comb when I plan on straightening, which is maybe twice a year. I started this about 6 months ago and I have no complaints.

I fell in love w/this Goody (Knockoff Denman) but I find too much hair in it so I'm keeping it to a max of once a week. If I can get away with not using it (by keeping my hair in braids under wigs) I use my hands to finger detangle.

I LOVE THE WAY MY HAIR LOOKS DETANGLED IN A BIG FRO BUT I DON'T THINK I'LL MEET APL IF I KEEP USING A COMB/BRUSH OFTEN (NATURAL 4B CNAPP).
