Stylists these days don't want to rollerset!!!

There are many salons in my area that does rollersets for as low as $10 (sometimes $8). I go occassionally if I am feeling too lazy to do it myself, like yesterday. I do bring my own rollers. It's in a strip mall. I exit the salon, get in my car, and drive straight home. I don't think it's a big deal.

I'm shopping for a new stylist who rollersets. I totally don't mind bringing my own rollers and stuff and drying myself at home. I will look like a bobble-head with hijab for the sake of healthy hair.

I agree. I will look like a bobble-head and save myself 2 hours in the salon. Besides, I have a hood dryer at home and I can get a lot done during that two hours if I choose to just let it air dry.

Back in my old city I had to get an old YT lady to do my rollersets. She is fierce with it too. And she only charged me 15.oo. I went in to a hood salon and they told me they dont even have those rollers to do. just lazy.

Wow, with that mindset i wouldn't want her touching my head! When she saw how pretty and long your hair is she would probably try to cut off about 5 or 6 inches.

^ I know....which is why I won't be going to her. I'm lazy...and cheap. I will try looking into beauty schools. I used to go to one in the past when I was relaxed. I will need to look them up again.

I am running into this as well. I called a place today and the lady told me that a rollerset wouldn't work if my hair wasn't straight. I then asked her if she thought that having a rollerset done prior to flat ironing would produce better results. She said no. Then she asked me if was "all African American." I told her I was. And she said that unless I'm mixed or "you got some Indian in you I'm gonna have to put some heat on your hair." So now I'm really thinking I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet & do it myself.

That is the most ridiculous nonsense I've ever heard, they need to be shut down. I def wouldn't even venture to that establishment after that lil exchange.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I have always had my hair blow dried or wrapped. When its wrapped I am under the dryer for 3 or more hours(thick hair). I though roller setting put a lot of stress on the hair. I have no problems with the occasional blow dry. Is wet setting really better?

Why do you think rollersets put stress on the hair? As long as you don't put too much tension while rolling, it should be fine. Plus, they are only on the hair for a few hours until the hair dries.

I have never met a stylist who did not like to do rollersets. There is one stylist in my city, that only does rollersets and silk wraps. The only thing I get asked when I get a rollerset is "do you just want the four rollers at the crown or rollers everywhere?"

The stylist I went to in college was the roller set queen. She really helped me keep my hair healthy.

I recently went to a stylist for the first time, and after I was washed, I asked her if she would roller set my hair. My reasons for setting is to create more volume (I have low density) Like OP said, she twisted up her face and told me I should let her "try it my way".

I looked at her, said OK, and let her blow dry and flat iron, as she gave me the "why I should go natural" speech. I'm not against being natural, but if I'm going to constantly straighten, I dont see the difference.

I hope she enjoyed it, because after that exchange, I knew she would never get another dime of my money. Hope you're reading Shondra! lol

When I want a roller set, I make sure I visit the Dominican salons only. I never get lip about roller sets w/them because roller sets are their standard.

I saw an episode of one of the show where the stylist swap salons and clients. And, this man just outright refused to do a rollerset on this woman. He said he can achieve the same look with a blow out. The lady said, yeah but it wont last. The man insisted, and in the end got what he wanted and the lady didnt.

Wow...I have no recollection of starting this thread, lol. I had to do a double take when I saw my name under the title, LMAO.

I think if you live in a city where there are a lot of dominican salons, the others are more willing to rollerset to keep you from going to the competition.

Sorry, hun, but it doesn't work that way. If you want to try it your way then you can play in one of your friends hair for free. I am paying so we will play by my rules.

I was getting by hair done by a stylist that didn't speak much English. I was telling her what I wanted and she just kept shaking her head. She said, "I'm doing this". I said, "I'm paying for it". Enough said.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard! :lachen:

She should've told you the truth, she has no idea how to rollerset hair. My EX-stylist blow fried my hair last summer because she insisted on it. I hate not rollersetting my hair because it just doesn't come out the same, the style doesn't last as long either. So anyway I found out that the reason why she kept insisting to blowdry my hair is because she charges extra if you don't rollerset  That woman is always trying to nickle and dime everybody. Hence the EX in bold.

People are straight crazy.

I go to a Dominican salon and they have no problem with rollersets. I did have to tell the stylist twice that I did not want a blow dry AFTER she took out the rollers. I just wanted her to wrap it. I only use direct heat about twice a year, if that.

I went to a Dominican salon and specifically asked if they could rollerset tight, curly, coily hair like mine and they said yes. I got there and the lady washing my hair asked me what I wanted and I said a rollerset and she pretended like she didn't hear me say it three times! and insisted that I get it blow dried. If I can rollerset my hair, so can you. Suck it up. I told her if she can't do it then to get someone who could or I would leave.

Im natural so the dominican stylist kind of got me onto doing rollersets because it gives more body and lasts longer. But i just couldnt take the heat and it broke down my fine hair after doing the 2nd or 3rd dominican blow out so i had to stop going. :(

I dont like press especially with my fine hair---i just started gettin some thickness to my hair where my hair has body to it--but i still would perfer rollersets..

i think ppl are just lazy thats all it is---they want to do something quick and get u out of their even if u are relaxed or natural and dont want to do what maybe best for ur hair.
and last longer..

I remember this one salon i went to in MIA my girlfriend turned me onto one time they had everyone in lines for $25 to 30.00 wash/condition/and rollersets --and they served breakfast---had a laundry list of relaxers that they would apply from box to professional.(it was ran by some Haitian ladies)...thats all everyone was getting done was rollersets and sitting under the dryers..

I knew it was somewhere i saw some ladies that just go to Dominican salons for the wash/condition and rollerset and not get the blow dry afterward.

So after you wrap it and go home does it look just as good as not having them blow dry it again with the round brush?

I haven't mastered doing rollersets but they are alot cheaper than going to the natural hair salons for presses...so im just wondering about this...

WOW....I'm shocked, I've never run into an issue where a styist won't rollerset my hair, or talked back to me after asking for a roller set. I'd get up and bounce no matter what point they were at with doing my hair.

I have to beg my stylist to get her flat iron my hair, and there are a list of questions that I have to give the "right" answer to, in order for her to flat iron my hair. She'd roller set me everytime if I let her, she remembers each and everytime she uses the flat iron on me, and if I skip weeks in between visits I have to tell her if/when I used heat myself.

Sounds like a great stylist!

This is the reason that I ONLY go to Dominican salons!!! Rollersetting is the standard way that they do hair! Until two years ago I have always went to Black salons and every salon I went to they would wash, condition, blow dry and curl my hair and then tell me that if I continued to go to them to do my hair that it would grow:nono:. Ofcourse I never retained any length, that is until I started going to Dominican salons. The lady I go to now is great:grin:. For two years she has been rollesetting my hair and only blowing out my roots and my hair has went from shoulder length to bsl!!!
