I comb thru some leave in and let it hang... I ended up with a crazy mess which I half way want to rewash and try again. When Ive tried before, i air dried in a pony tail but it took too long to dry where my hair was banded AND it also matted.

No, I dont think Ive ever heard of doing it this way before. May have to try it. I dont want to be a slave to my blow dryer.Have you tried using the scarf method? It's when you place a scarf on your hair, tighten to comfortability, and let your hair hang. I use this method every time.

I use cholestrol as my dc and i pre pooed with aussie moist. My leave ins were Aphogee Provitamin leave in Spray and a touch of Neutrogena Silk Touch Leave in cream. I'll try the scarf method one day but idk...something tells me my 10 month old ng is gonna give it a run for its money!!!
Try different things, the scarf method works, also depending on the length of your hair you could wrap it. Is your hair well moisturized in general? You could also airdry in twists or braids if you're not opposed to waves...
Air drying is AWESOME!
you don't have to be a slave to your blowdryer! why should you? shoot!! You WILL find a method that works for you, i'm sure of it.

Whimsy is absolutely correct and so are you...... airdrying IS hard...... UNTIL.... you find a method that works for you. Finding a technique that works for your hair is the hardest part... but boy is the payoff worth it once you succeed. It took me over a year to perfect my airdrying method, and shoot, I bet there are other methods that will work better for my hair that I have yet to discover.
Airdrying works for me under the following pretenses:
#1) Hair is super moisturized (I have to DC overnight on dry hair with a moisturizing conditioner)
#2) I have to slick my hair back into two ponytails (top and lower half)
#3) Must apply leavein, serum, and EVOO
#4) Must occasionally comb/smooth/brush hair while it's drying to have a sleek look
