How often do you use it? Has it thinned your hair?
every 3 months (w/ relaxer touchups) every 2 months (doing bkt)

it only snips the very tips. you really can't even tell something happened to your hair. when you look in the chamber you see little bitty tips of hairs.

it also helps me track how healthy my ends are. if they're a mess, the chamber will be full of lil' hairs, & vice versa

i also love how it's a way to snip the ends of ALL your hair, including any short hairs you have, not just the bottom of your hair like a regular trim

Word of advice: use it on straight hair, and do small, well-detangled sections. the brush CAN snag.

Thanks, Me-T. Hey, when you BKT, do you do it with the BKT in your hair? Or do you straighten at some other time and do it?

Thanks for answering. Does your hair have to be dead straight when you use it because I'm relaxed but I don't flat iron except on relaxer days which is every 12 weeks. If that's the case, I'll have the purchase the Split Ender at the end of April

I WANT ONE!!!!!! I want one because I only go to the salon mostly every 4 months and get my trim & chemicals at PA location, but sometimes I kinda need it in between trims are 8 bucks at the NJ locals and THEY GET CUT HAPPY! Don't TRust them, it will pay for its self within a few years!

Gabrielle: it doesn't have to be bonelaxed-ateyaa-heat-regimen straight, i'm just saying a natural head would have to press first. it snags easily so it works better for straight hair

I wish I had heard about this thing when I flat ironed my daughters natural hair a couple of weeks ago. I thought I used sufficient heat protectent but obviously I didn't, because she had a ridiculous amount of split ends within a few days. It took me 4 hours over the course of 2 days to do a search and destroy on her apl hair. :wallbash:

I am going to read a few more reviews before I purchase because I plan on trimming my hair within the next few months but I dont want to lose length. I am so excited I could just scream.

Thanks for the heads up on this product.

ETA: Okay I am going to buy this, I searched around on the web and I came across an interesting review that seems to be unbiased. One thing that stuck out to me was about sharpening the blade (see the part I highlighted in red)::

How to save on hair trims
Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 9:07pm
I don’t like to go for unnecessary hair trims. They are either expensive or I risk getting a bad hair cut. What if we are able to reduce the amount of hair trims and only visit a good hairdresser when we feel like changing our haircuts? There is actually a way we can trim our own hair, without much skill needed.

There is this cool gadget called the Talavera Split Ender Maxi Kit. It is able to trim 1/8 to ¼ inch of your hair and get rid of split ends. If you use it every two weeks, you can maintain your hairstyle for a very long time.

How does it work?

First, dry and detangle your hair. Place a small section of hair on the Split-Ender Special Hair Plate. Select the Directional Switch to ARROW aiming down. Run the split ender down your hair. Repeat 2 to 4 times. Here is a video showing you how it works and how to use it

Why I chose this product instead of others?

It’s one of a kind.
Plenty of customers in informercial ratings used it and found that it works in getting rid of split ends.
It can be used on various hair lengths.

How can I make the most out of this product?

Share this with your family members, like your kids, as well. It will mean more savings for your family.
Keep the blade sharp by running it through some very fine 1000 grit sandpaper. Else, you will need to get replacement blades that last around a year. Each replacement blade costs $14.95.

How can this help me save money?

People usually pay $10 to $20 every month for a hair trim, if you are frugal. If you use the Split Ender to trim your hair, you could save at least $480 in 5 years.

Pros and Cons, and Things to Note

It’s important to read and follow the instructions that come with the Split Ender. Some found that it didn’t work because they did not follow the instructions properly.
Get the one from Talavera. Cheaper counterfeits do not work.
Only use it on small sections of hair. Putting in too much hair will cause your hair to be yanked.
Don’t run it through your hair with too much force. It might cause the Talavera Split Ender to break.
You might want to use this only bi-weekly or on a monthly basis. It will take some time to use it, depending on the amount of hair you have.
Be sure to detangle your hair with a brush before using the Split Ender. A good brush (one that can last more than 20 years and won’t yank your hair out) would be the Philips Light Touch.
Don’t use this if you have curly hair.

How much does it cost?

MissA you took the word right out of my mouth. Looks like I can't use it on blowdried hair. I haven't even attempted to flatiron my hair yet. Anyways I have always been intersted in this but I will be waiting on more reviews. I haven't trimmed or dusted since my BC back in 10-09. My ends are so dry this might help. IDK I am waiting on some more reviews though, particularly from naturals, type 4 would be nice.

Plus the youtube videos say that your hair has to be free of product, naked. That means blowdrying and flatironing my fragile 4b hair with no heat protectant? The splitender would really get a workout because that would probably damage my hair.

I'm just going to have to do Tracee's method I guess!

this thing IS traycee's method; just automated. actually, her method is the same that many salons use on long hair instead of just cutting/trimming the ends of the hair. the device actually mimics this maneuver.

i don't think that if you use heat protectant before your blowdry and straighten that it will cause problems. when they say no product, i'm assuming that it means nothing like oils or hairsprays or leave-ins that make your strands stick together, rendering the tool ineffective. i'm seriously considering this product. i think it could do wonders for us transitioning or shorter haired ladies that find it impossible to a proper dusting or search and destroy on the back of our heads. may be worth the investment.

before i started bkt's i would use a wee bit of something really light. i don't like the idea of using that thing on straight-up dry hair.

OKAY THE SPLITENDER is the BIZNESS!!!! I used it today and I have to say it did a good job of cleaning up my ends. I used really small parts because I have alot of hair and a big head LOL. I have a section in the back that is not 100% straight (I am relaxed) and it worked on that as well. I ran it over rightside up and then flipped it and ran it upside down over those sections, worked well. It took me about an hour to do my entire head not bad. I went over each section fairly slowly because the blade is only sharp on one side from what I could see. This is a keeper. I did not have many splits I just wanted to try it out. It took btwn 1/8-1/4 inch off each strand.

This takes off the tips of each strand which is okay because it is such a small amount. I ran over each section once some twice if I felt it needed more.

You can use a little of something, I would suggest a very light oil to assist in detangling coconut oil would be best IMO. I used KK Knot today when under the bonnet dryer. It has no oils and no cones/xanes/conols, pertroleum or mineral oils that will seal the hair.

I'm looking at Youtube reviews right now. I'm pretty sure I'm getting this soon. It sounds like just what i need.

The only thing deterring me from getting this right now is the $60 price. I already bought some scissors for trimming with the intention of dusting and doing a thorough search and destroy. I never can dedicate myself to doing it. I always wondered if there was something to make the process less time consuming. I imagined if there was something faster I'd end up chopping off half my hair. This looks promising though.

This looks like something I def. need b/c these multiple hour/multiple day S&D's are a little time consuming.

Any naturals, particularly 4 somethings, try this yet?

Yeah I've used it. Only came in here because I wanted to know if other naturals were using it.

I didn't even blow dry my hair. I just had my hair partially stretched and used it with small sections. My hair felt differently. And it only took off the very ends like they said. :yep:

So it's great in my opinion.

I ordered mine, used it and it's not worth it to me. It's going back. I can do a better job with scissors.
