Disgusting Behavior of Nurses

allnurses Guide

I am just flabbergasted. My best friend, who is manic depressive is an excellent, organized nurse who really puts a positive foot in her work. Since her last manic episode, she has really been diligent in taking her meds. A downfall of the medication is that her hair has broken off and she gained weight. Because of that, she decided to cut her hair very short and wear it natural (she is African American). Sometimes, it is a short afro, other times, small twists.

Well, this morning, in front of at least 10 other witnesses, a head nurse walked up to her and said that her hair is horrible, she looks disheveled and also looks homeless. She also said that 'everyone is talking about it' and it appears that she is decomposing 'before their very eyes'. My friend was horrified, to say the least. She called me on my cell phone as I was on my way to work and told me this. This is the first day of her vacation and this is how it is supposed to start??

First off, did this woman even think...my friend was very meticulous in how she wore her hair in the past...now that it had broken off, and she has to pay cash for her medication to keep her stable, she decided that it was not worth spending money on the chemicals-it was wiser to take her medications as prescribed. Can that make her happy? But, she accepted it and make accomodations for her new hair.

All I can say is if I were present to witness such behavior, especially after knowing what my friend went through, I would have probably been the one suspended by the time I put that witch in her place. See, this is why nursing is going down. We can't even respect or show empathy for each other. It is all about embarassment, harassment, competition and insults. What has this line of work come to where our so-called leaders can get away with this?

My friend reported this to the Director of Nursing. Thank goodness, before she became a nurse, she was the DON's private secretary and she adores my friend. She told her that she WILL speak to that fool before the end of the day. Also, you never know who you are speaking to. This sorry head nurse doesn't even know that the DON and my friend are so close that she has been invited to spend the weekend with the DON many times over the years, with her children and the DON has also paid my friend's tuition for her daughter to attend private school. My friend, however, is not a name dropper, nor does she exploit her relationship with this woman. Oh, I am so angry...

People have ISSUES :nono:

I hope the woman gets what she deserves.

I hope your friend keeps strong and continues to do well! :bighug:

Well somebody is in trouble but if i was your friend i would have blazed her A&& infront of everybody and make her feel lower than scum after i was done with her. She is rude and disgusting

what a horrible human being. was public humiliation really neccessary? urgh i hope she gets reprimanded and has to give the lady a public apology. what an ignorant woman.

I read your post on the website earlier. I think that was unprofessional and insulting.

How unprofessional and downright disrespectful to address someone like this in front of others. If she had a problem with her appearance, it would have been a good idea for her to speak to her in private. but in front of others? i'd be angry, totally embarassed, and have half a mind to bust her in her mouf right there in front of all those witnesses.

ETA: how UTTERLY disrespectful! her appearance was partially due to her illness! how DARE that woman attack her for her personal appearance, which she could not help! I am so mad right now.

Let us know how this turns out and yes we will get have guilty pleasure knowing what was done or said to that inconsiderate idiot!

You can get fired for saying something like that or at the very least reprimanded.

I hope she has to give her a formal PUBLIC apology.

I'm a former active member of that board. I just lurk these days.

How unfortunate a nurse could be so critical of another without considering the background story. :nono:

As a fellow Nurse, I too am appalled by this unprofessional attitude. I do not want people to think that all Nurses are like this one. There are bad apples in every profession, however it is a disgrace to hear about a so-called professional disrespecting a colleague, esp one who is ill. I am so glad you were available for your friend to speak to about this, as your advice was sound and warranted. No one deserves that type of harassment. It makes me cringe just to think what this does to your friend's self esteem.

When I looked up the word B!TCH in the dictionary, the head nurse's picture was there! What a horrible thing to say!!!

OMG!! How she held it together??? she is better than me...I would've snapped right back...but that's just me. shoot...if I was one of those 10 witnesses, I would've snapped...

Wow. How demoralizing and humiliating to be insulted in front of other people and to be told that everyone else feels the same way.

Forget an apology, I would ask for that person to be fired...or at least suspended without pay and written up.

I agree....what good is an apology from an idiot who will probably never understand that her comments were both rude, insensitive and offensive in the first place.....she clearly needs a "hit" to her wallet either in the form of a suspension or firing to help her "think first" before she opens her big mouth again.:nono:

Buttercream your hair is beautiful.

I have no words that hadn't already been said about this nurse.

As a nurse of nearly 20 yrs I have seen a lot of things-both dealing with patients and how Nurses treat each other. I has not gotten much better and this is why many of our grads don't stay with it or end up choosing another career. Why would you stay with something that is supposed to foster caring and compassion and instead allows degradation and diminished empathy. One question- If this is how she treated your friend-How does she really treat the patients? One has to wonder...

WOW, This is so horrible. I just passed my NCLEX-RN this week and will start my first nursing job soon. I can only hope that my supervisors are not as shallow and flat out rude as this. OP, I hope your friend gets all the apologies and respect she deserves.

I'd be fired and in jail because the nurse would have gotten a beatdown. Sorry, I couldn't have taken that.:wallbash:
