"dreads" that they just twist their hair into, no matter the length?

Well, is it possible to start dreads on long black hair?

Or do you have to cut down and start wiht those twisty coils on short hair?

You can start on long hair. I did when I got locs. You can either start by palm rolling or two strand twists. When I did mine, I used two strand twists.

Also regular braids. If you have relaxed hair I believe you can sister loc.

how does it work from regular braids? u just never take them out? how long does that take? doesnt it look messy after a while?

so basically if u want locks and u have longer than 3 in hair, they have to start out really skinny?

like sisterlocks and microbraids?

I started locks on longer hair and mine were not super skinny, definitely not as small as sisterlocks.

Yes. Unfortunately, I have seen that. :nono:

ETA: This comment was not directed at Whimsy but at our er...less textured friends who's locs often look a HAM.

You can do them at any size i believe It'll just take longer I imagine. Braids I imagine would hold the hair more and not have it keep coming undone or looking as messy as twists and coils are prone to be.

Whimsy are you thinking of locing?

My SO started his locs on long hair. He started with palm rolls. His are kind of thin but they didn't start out that way. He got them trimmed down once they finally locked.

You just braid them the thickness you want and then leave them alone. Same with twists & I believe palm rolled coils. The length of time it takes depends on what type of hair you have. I have thick, coarse, kinky hair (4a) and it didn't take long at all.

False. Not unless your hair is relaxed since I don't think you can get thicker sisterlocs. But when I started locking my hair years ago, I had a good 6 inches and mine were about as thick as a standard pen. Maybe a little thicker. Why I decided to chop them off & relax my hair, I have no clue. And now I'm thinking about going back and it's all this thread's fault.

IMHO, it's a very easy process. It's not going to be those sleek coils right off the bat, so I guess that's the messy stage, but it's not that bad.

Hmm i wonder just HOW messy i'd be looking and for how long....lots to consider.

yeah, i'm thinkin next year after i reach hip length (and after my wedding photos are taken) i might chop off enough to donate and either start locs or just chop down to a very short twa for a while. i dunno.

How long did it take for his hair to loc? how long was his hair when he started w/ the palm rolls?

Whimsy, please don't tell me you're thinking of dreading that beautiful hair! ::covers eyes and ears::

don't hide. yes i am.

I'd say it look about 7 or 8 months for his hair to fully loc. Before he loced his hair was about MBL stretched (he's short ) but it shrunk to about SL. When I met him he had braids that hung about APL on blow dried hair. Those braids had to go. :look: I convinced him to loc. He's been loced for about a year and half now and his locs are approaching APL. But people always ask how they got so long so fast. He never went through that short budding stage because his hair was already long.

I'm thinking about locing myself. If I decide to do it, I plan to wait until after the wedding.

You know what Whimsy, my roommate started hers with long hair too. Her hair was about BSL. She's been loced longer than SO but her hair is about SL now. Her hair had a lot more shrinkage though which is why I think it looks shorter than SOs. He's a 4a/3c mix and she's 4a/4b. I think she's been loced for 2 maybe 2.5 years now. I don't think it's been 3 years yet.

So do you have to cut off the braided or twisted or palm rolled parts after the new growth comes in and starts locking? or does it look uniform and is able to all loc and stay long?

I'm excited now!

What's the care and maintenance process?

No you don't have to cut anything off. You just retwist the new growth periodically and it all blends in. The twisting and palm rolling is what encourages the hair to loc. It won't grow in loced. You'll have new growth just like you would when it's time to relax. That's what they do when you go in for maintenance. They retwist the new growth and then you sit under the dryer with clips in until it's dry. SO goes for maintenance maybe once a month. My roommate goes every two weeks. She gets different styles though. They both just cover their hair up at night and that's it.

Yes

Yes

about a year

No - you latch the new growth regularly to keep it neat. Some people twist new growth but latching is more durable. Go to the locked blog exchange (google it) and you'll find lots of examples.

No - they can be any size you want them to be. The benefit to skinny is if you decide later that you want them bigger then you can combine them but if you start out big and decide you want to go smaller then you have to take them out and start over.

Omg whimsy, this is so exciting...!! This thread gave me life lol
I'm so convinced, I need locs in my life. The sooner the better.

I'm getting tired of relaxers and slowly getting tired of fake hair so I think this is the next step for me...

I'm gonna try two strand twists and see how i like them to transition to locs

I'm kinda excited too. I'm not 100% sure about it, but it's either locs or a buzzcut...we shall see.

I love my length and can't wait to reach my next length goal but...i need a change!! And it definitely wont be a change back to chemically altering my texture...

POST PICTURES OF YOUR TWO STRAND TWISTS!!! I wanna seeee. Are you transitioning? what's goin on.

I had locs for almost 2yrs. I love them, and miss them so. Anyway, you do not have to start them off short to start the locing process.

I started my loc journey on just shy of SL hair. My hair never fully fully loc'd. I was able to comb them out (though I had lotsa breakage) too. My cousin started his locs last year sometime. I'd say he had closer to APL hair. His locs are nice and hold up well.

Change is good! :yep: If I could do it all over, I'd do the buzz cut, then transition out into the locs process. That way, by the time they get some length, they will have matured some.

Did you get rid of your locks just for change or for another reason?

Yeah I think if I cut low, I'll just keep it like that for a while. Decisions, decisions...

Think you'll go back to locs?

At time I actually wanted to start over. I knew nothing about healthy hair care. My stylist was using Foam wrap, blackgel and beeswax (in that order :nono:) every 2 weeks on my hair. It was gummy, eventhough it looked great!

I started feeling like if I was going to keep allowing all these chemicals on my hair, I may as well go back to a relaxer..which obviously was not an option.

I started learning how to take care of my natural hair, and just haven't gone back to restarting my locing process. One day though.

If I could, I'd have my locs back. I'm in the military though so that's a no-go for now. :ohwell:

Sounds sticky!

What are you supposed to use on them? If I want to do these myself and not rely on a stylist, what am I going to need? (besides patience)

Why?!? Your poor hair!!

I didn't know women couldn't loc their hair in the military. Learn something new everyday.
