"You can't be all black, your hair is too soft..."

Well, I work at Sallys and you would not believe the ignorance.

Rampant I tell ya'!

I've had people come in needing help with their biracial children, ( mostly white women who have no clue), who tell me they don't understand how their hair is so nappy and difficult to manage and where is the nearest straightener. I love helping people because I've learned so much information but their are some people who dont want help, they will etheir ask for a salon that specializes in "that" kind of hair or straigten it within an inch of it's life. Poor kids.

White women come in telling me how they dont like their haircut but it'll gorw back to their waists in 2 months, not like "my" type of hair.

I've had a girl ask me what do people of my skin color use to make "our" hair grow because her daughter lopped it off with some scissors. She kept insinuating but I played dumb and made this broad say what she was meaning to say all on her own. She apologized for how bad it sounded and to my credit I didn't comfort her.

Because Sallys has ethnic products on one side and "caucasian" products on another side, Women will walk to one side and literally shake their heads at me when I suggest a product not in their "ethnicty"? for their hair troubles.

Oh, top it all off, I had a women ask me if I had any white or Indian in my family. When I told her not that I'm aware of, she tried to argue me down because apparently if your black and somwhat attracted you can thank another race for that. Really??! With this giant afro puff on my head you say that and then lok at me pleased like I am supposed to take that as a compliment?!! Pure ignorance.

ALso, you should go straight to the District manager. Call that Sallys and ask for their number. If they dont give it to you call corporate directly. You should see how my manager seizes when somebody threatens this, lol.

Me too. These stories get recycled every month - variations on the same theme. Look 'em up...

Cliff notes...
They all go like this

Someone said:
  • I look Asian
  • My kids must have a white/asian/hispanic papi
  • My hair is soo soft/long/curly/straight so I can't be fully black
  • How does my hair get so soft/long/curly/straight when both of my parents are black
  • I must be mixed because I have (insert valued trait here)
And responses go like this:
  • Yeah, that happens to me all the time. Ugh
  • I used to think the same thing before I came to LHCF
  • I can't believe this!
  • Well you do look mixed - your hair is soo soft/long/curly/straight
I'm trying not to be snarky but I sometimes wonder if these threads are veiled attempts at getting compliments. Maybe I'm wrong but I dunno.

YES! Same thing with the "what is my hair type?" Folks be hoping they get ooooh you are 2c ooooooh your hair so pretty! LOL!! Drives me BONKERS!

ok ok, Im being facetious....or am I?

I would go back and get her name, speak to the manager, call the regional manager...write to corporate, etc...I don't play mess like that. Like white chicks never have dry, brittle hair. *********...

I really should do that, the reason I always go to this particular Sallys, is b/c my good friend has been working there since we were in high school and I like to catch up with her, of all the days she was not at work I get stuck with the lady still mentally in the 1940's.

Wow, people need to come out from under the rocks that they live at and open their eyes. How can she say that about her own child??? Ugh.

BTW your hair is beautiful, makes me miss my natural years:yep:

I get the are you mixed? Questions every day....I tell them I'm mixed with Love,Peace & Soul...Walk away...

Happy Hair Growing!

Ugh! I can't stand "what are you?"

My response: a human being

I always wonder why folks come on here and post stories like this....

yeah...I wonder what her reaction to the "compliment" was as well....

I posted this because #1 I NEVER hardly post anything here, I always just read and take in everything that some of my inspirations may post. And #2 the fact that this is a continuing occurrence for a number of African American women have to still deal with these offensive comments in this day and age is ridiculous. Even if someone has just posted something like this a month ago or a year ago, the fact is that it's horrible that we are still looked upon based on the 1900's paper bag test.

...and to answer the second question, I told her that yes ma'am I’m mixed with black and blacker. She then had nothing else to say and my fiancé was cracking up in front of her.

Alrighty, I'll hop on the woe is you bandwagon as well....woe is you doobiequeen88, woe is you.

We need a sticky for these kind of topics...something to the effect of "What race were you mistaken for today" or "What our of pocket comment was made about your hair/skin color today?" I think it would save on a lot of drama.

I think the point is though, you've raised what happened to you in this forum which is fine - but we can't do much except sympathise with you regarding this unfortunate experience.

What you should be doing is actually ensuring that this particular employee learns that she has been horribly offensive and the only way you can do that is by making a complaint. The SA will probably still go ahead offending other folks thinking that she's isn't doing anything wrong! :perplexed

I'm just sayin....

Lawd :nono:.....i usually say a person or a human being as well......im sorry but i love the sound of "clear people".....meaning.....SEE THOO!.......okay okay im done. But yeah...that generalization of hers was over the mountain...:hardslap:

I'm just trying to figure out when LHCF decided that we can't post of our experiences if other people have posted similar experiences. If that is how LHCF is to be then it will cease to exist. That is the nature of a site like this. Get used to it. It's been happening for years and will continue to happen.
To the OP, I hope you don't allow others to discourage you from posting whatever type of hair experience you've had. As you can well see, plenty of other people responded to your thread in a positive or helpful way.

My question is, "if people are so sick of certain types of threads then why do they enter them?" I mean the title of the post gave a GIANT hint about what it would be about. If I was sooooo perplexed and bothered by people making certain threads I would just stay out of them.
