There are so many ladies in this forum thinking that they have a hair type that they don't

You have to look at least 1" inch of new growth and you base your hair type from that, accourding to Oprah's Stylist Adre

I have his book at home, and he is the person who invented the systen in the first place

How are your going to get a relaxer/texturizer and then say "Yeah this is my hair type"

We are smater than this ladies...

Well my hair has a variety of textures however, I'll stick with how my hair originally was when i came to the forum which is type 4b.

You off the chain. Was there a need to point out the obvious? LMAO

well, i use his hair type theory (3c/4a)according to my new growth/natural hair... in the very middle part of my head my hair texture is actually closer to 3b...

i would hope that most folks are using his theory according to their natural hair as well....

Ain't no shame in my game -I'll say it-YEAH I'm 4a/4b and even if there wasn't a hair typing system (which sometimes I wish there wasn't-I'm nappy to the nth degree and I still work it out);)

you go, natstar...

i feel the same way about people that post their hair is 20inches long and it's barely past their neck(in the pics). whew, feels good to finally get that out.

I agree with the original poster. It seems as if some of the ladies with 4a/4zzzzzzzz have to throw in that patch of "baby hair" for good measure.

This is why I'm not typing anymore- it so darn contentious! And at the end of the day, who cares??? I think people really have a deep seated emotional problem with other people "trying" to claim the "better" hair types- why does it matter to you?
I have no clue who you are trying to call out but I don't believe this is common (people wearing a texturizer and calling it their hair type).
Is the implication that people say they are 3c in order to make themselves feel better???
This good/bad hair thing can't be shaked for nothing.

Thank you so much! Some people need to wake up and get a clue!:lachen:

This is what had me so confused when I first got ot this site. I would say "Oh by Andre's system Im a 4a." But then Id see someone thats really a 4b saying that they were 4c or 4a and Id get confused all over again! Then when Den1 said she was 4a I figured I was the same and they she told me I was not. Ifelt so confused. I went thru a hair identity crisis. I thought that people would offer better advice if I knew what hair type I was. For real what would I look like taking advice from a 1a person? Stop the lies ladies YOU ARE CONFUSING THE NEWBIES! And Den if I hear you hollering 4b 1 more time Im have to hurt you

Are people really typing/classifying their chemically altered textures?

For those who mis-type, while it is very much confusing for newbies, are they doing it intentionally?

EDITED TO SAY: I think I see what inspired this thread. And if I am correct, the person says that they are natural... =)

Gurrl....This is why I no longer acknowledge that system or choose to type my own hair. After my trying to type it myself, and other people telling me it was another texture...I eventually was like, why the hell does it matter? Whether I call it 8a or 1z....it IS what it IS and I have to deal with it AS IS! Wishful thinking won't do anything to change the ACTUAL texture of my hair... I think this whole hair typing system has turned more into a dividing classification system more than anything...that's just my opinion.

It's funny, because people are laughing and joking in another thread about the "brainwashing" of some naturals who are extreme in there pro-natural, militant belifes, and yes, some people are EXTREME and over the top, but THIS is the kind of brainwashing that is the real problem among black woman in America... we are so obsessed with what hair type we have, wishing we had a certain hair type, making ourselves belive we have a certain hair type because we refuse to accept the hair type that we do have for whatever conscience or subconscience reason may be...this is the biggest form of brainwashing ever...but like I said in the other thread...no one likes to address this point.

I could care less about someone else who has type 3 hair. My hair is 4a and beautiful. I don't feel inferior to anyone one 3 type hair:confused:

You have to take here of you here based on what type you have. I don't mean to put anybody down. The purpose for my post is sincerely to clear up the confusion. I am just a sarcastic person.

I think I see too, but the one I see, I'm under the understanding that they are not natural.

I've never read Adre's book, but everytime I've seen anything that described types it's always a picture of a celebrity w/ perfectly styled, product-filled hair. I've never seen any pictures of roots w/ no product. But regardless, I prefer the Nap-O-Meter. Using it you measure the number the peaks or valleys (curls) in one inch of unstretched hair.

Napometer-vi.jpg

At my scalp my natural hair, without product, is 3cpi (curls per inch). No guesswork, just math.

Oh and Den1 you're not a 4 anything. Sorry, girl. ;)

YOU KNOW WHAT!!! I'VE BEEN ON THIS FORUM FOR YEARS I MUST BE HONEST WITH YOU.....I AM COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY CONFUSED ABOUT THIS HAIR TYPE THING LOL. I PROMISE I WON'T MENTION MY HAIR TYPE ANYMORE, I'M JUST ADDING TO THE CONFUSION LOL I SHOULD KNOW BETTER

You are NOT a 4b and I agree with the OP.

She is definitely not a 4b. A 4b is not supposed to have any curl definition.

I think most people are a bit confused about their hair type. While your hair may have some of the characteristics of one hair type, it's possible that it also has the same characteristics of another.

The only reason I even check for people's hair type is if I'm wondering if a certain product they said they have had good results with may do the same for me. Strangely enough, even that system doesn't work.

Co-signing with kristina. This just does not matter to me. When a 4a says they are 3b I think it's kinda cute like when a plump girl thinks she is skinny or light-skinned person thinks they are brown-skinned or whatever. In most cases I think it is innocent but even if it is intentional I just don't care. Their hair type does not affect my hair type. Plus, there is sooo much information available if someone really wants to type their hair, a few confused people couldn't be that harmful or annoying. Plus I think Kristina and I both have hair that's hard to type so we just leave it alone. It's just hair and in the end I think we should all be a little kinder and less judgemental. On this board I have seen gorgeous, healthy 4a/b hair and jacked up, weak-looking 3a/b, and vice-versa. I just don't see what the big deal is.

Very true, but for those that are taking care of there hair based on a hair type that they don't have is useless. What's the point of having a hair typing system if people miss use it? The titles make it more difficult for some to find what works for their hair....if they are under the assumption that they are a particular hair type (whatever the reasons may be), based on a "system" and they are not, them running out buying every product and trying every method under the sun for a hair type the don't have is ridiculous and not beneficial at all.

I agree. Different types have different needs. Folks w/ white hair worry about oil, folks w/ our hair worry about dryness. It matters, but not as a put down. Why the heck does it always come to that?

Great point!! these women defintely have some kind of product on their hair, its difficult to tell their true hair type.

Rather than accuse people of lying, I would rather say that Andre's system is incomplete. Andre's system only measures curl diameter, not texture. But texture is such a huge part of knowing what products work or don't work on your hair, rather than the size of the curl. I think some people use 3c to say that "my hair is multi-textured and curly, but the curls are tighter like a black person's hair, but not kinky/nappy."

I think this is illustrated a bit where I recall some folks were talking about how to combat the frizz that won't go away in their curly hair (some happened to be "3c"). I would usually consider the permanent "frizz" in black/multiethnic black hair the undefined z-shaped strands Andre uses to categorize 4b--not something to combat, but an actual part of your hair texture.

Anyway, LOIS works better for me--I have O-shaped coils and strands, mostly in the front and middle of my hair; S-shaped strands that sometimes clump, along the sides and back and randomly; and patches of L-shaped strands throughout my head, including the front hairline. My strands are thin and my texture is spongy. My hair doesn't pull back straight, even when wet, without assistance.

The real question should be is "who gives a ish". Why do we care if somebody is typing their hair wrong. For real, the whole typing thing is confusing to me. I have to ask other people what my hair type is because it is not an exact science. What is the big deal about 3 C? Is that suppose to be a more desired hair type?

Also, everyone's hair is different. I don't use products becuase someone else whose hair looks like mine had success with it. Pictures are decieving. You don't know what products someone put in their hair to achieve the look. I go by what works well for CG.
