Yes you can have type 4 and type 2 hair on the same head - Look!

Fine 4s

Well-Known Member
As I was combing my client's hair in prep for a cut, I noticed a curly hair that looked just like mine laying on the top of her wavy, wet hair.
As I tried to pull it out, it curled up even tighter! I looked closer and noticed it was HER hair and she had these strands all over her head!
It was so surprising to me that I took a picture of it. She is aware of these type 4s (more 4b) on her head and explained (unsolicited) that her father is Jewish so perhaps somewhere down the line she has some African blood in her.

This was too fascinating for words...sharing time!

I also have a final pic. As you can see, you can't tell any type 4 anything anywhere NEAR her head.

ETA: Pic one- look closely and see the little brown curly hair strand poking out. It may look a lil' blury but that was it. Throughout her head.

I saw it (pretty wild) and I think that it's entirely possible. Genetics and endless possibilities are just awesome. You make me want to take pics of my nape. I've posted about it before but never with pics.

it seems like parts of my hair - the top and the bottom near the nape of my neck especially - have no curl pattern at all. parts of my hair seem to be straight/wavy. the only reason i wouldnt call it a type 2 pattern is that i have afro-textured hair, so i dont think it matters even if it doesnt curl. it isnt 'straight'.

eta - you can kind of see it in my siggy pic. i pulled up the hair that didnt curl like the hair underneath it.

Girl, I might need a microscope for this one. I can't see it!

I don't get it. I was expecting to see a curly fro with a few silky, wavy strands sticking out. All I see is straight type 1 hair.:perplexed

I have always believed since coming to this site that some of us have different combinations of hair than the typical 3/4 that some of us say they have.

I mean what if a person has a combination of 2a/3a on this board? or 3a/2b? Or 1c/4a? I mean there is too many things that my hair does that does not fit in with the typical patterns that we set on this board for ourselves :look:

:yep::yep:agreed

In the OP's pic, it's the part sticking up through the straight hair. It could be mistaken for light but it's a hair. I think the confusion is that people are expecting type 4 hair with a few 2's and it's the opposite. :look:

___

Here's a small section (parted down the middle) near my nape. 90% dry. No product. It's the part that ALWAYS hangs when I go for a puff. No clue what it is or why. It's all the same length. The other side is looser. It's wild! I just embrace it all.

Hey ladies,

I'm sorry it's so tiny but it's better than nothing, right?

It's ONE STRAND of hair and the texture was rough/krinkly in texture.
She's is undeniably a majority type 2 with sprinklings of STRANDS of 4.
Only visible in the first pic. The last pic is just to show that you would never be able to tell the type 4 in there.

I never saw this before so I thought it would be a good visual (for those who can see it.)

We took some other pics with her camera and she said she'd email them to me. IF they are better pics than this, I'll update this thread with them...

Just a fun krinkly visual :)

ETA: @Whimsy, yep, one whimsical krinkly strand ;) She had them all over but I had to zoom in on one so ya'll can see it. And THAT didn't even work lol #FAIL!

i see it.

i have seen it before though. my mom has predominately type 2 hair and type 3/4 hair sprinkled in.

when i was a little girl i would try to comb her wet hair and the two textures would tangle up and matt if you didn't get through them fast enough while it was soaking wet.

you would never have been able to tell she had kinkier textures mixed in when it was dry and straight though.

thanks for sharing this OP :)

I believe it. One of my bff's is white with some native american far back along the lines. She's a dirty blond, type 2 with 4b black hair in her edges. When she told me, I was like gtfo, but she pulled a few pieces and gave me a strand. It's not a lot of 4b hair, but it's in there.

Y'all go hard on pictures!
I see it OP. It's hard to see with the light, but it's there.:yep:

She's in beauty school- she even went to haiti during the devastation to cut hair--and did a few threads on the hair scene there! where have you been? (just kidding!)

Okay, I finally found the hair. And from what I could make of it it looked like a type 3 strand...so she has types 2 & 3 on her head, which is common...

I totally believe that types 2 & 4 and even types 4 & 1 can co-exist on one head, but I'm still waiting on a more illustrative example.

Is it the same as having type 3 & 4 new growth...but after a dominican blow out...your hair appears as type 2. No matter how long I been stretching...a blow out will get my hair to a type 2...but just a sweat on the roots...I have type 3/4 roots with straight strands?????????

Ive always figured that this was possible. If alot of us can end up with 4a hair can have random patches of 2 something strands than why wouldnt it be possible the other way around???

I think you have some heat damage, so not the same thing.

Is the hair in the first picture wet or blowdried? If it is dry then it looks like the hair might just have not been straightened when dried.

I think you can have ANY combo of hair. I have these random pieces that are nearly straight, and I initially thought they were heat damage but the roots are straight too. They annoy me, lol.
