I also like and voted for the yarn braids. I have used both and for me the yarn is much easier to braid with opposed to the synthetic bc it does not snag and tangle when I actually braid.
Also, the yarn IMO is more pliable and does seem to hold moisture a lot better then the synthetic!
I was once a big fan of yarn...until I found that no matter what I did, my yarn braids would start to mildew and smell after about 6 washes . And I have to wash. So I stopped doing those.
Otherwise, I'd still be doing them for all the benefits of yarn braids. They look neater and prettier imo, they are easier to do, they get A LOT of compliments, easier take down process, less slippage, more moisture retention.
I absolutely love yarn braids. I've had two sets so far and they've been really good to my hair. I did a yarn braids review on my blog, talking about both what I liked and didn't like. I hope it helps you some.
It depends on the look you want. I used yarn years ago because there was no afro textured synthetic available but these days there's so much afro textured synth that yarn isn't really necessary. It's lightweight, and easy to wash. Whereas yarn is heavy. Plus you have to burn the ends of the yarn to seal them and to me that was a pita.
