I have a lot of stuff regarding yarn braids on my blog, like maintenance such as washing, drying and taking them out etc.
They're a nice style ^^ I love yarn braids, I will PS in them for some time, I got good retention when I did it last year for two months and now I'm doing it again but this time I'm actually documenting everything. They're not heavy like traditional braids and they're really light.
Pros: extremely light. the fancy updos look great.
Cons: they seem to slip easily. prep time (cutting yard) takes a while
They were popular on here for quite a while. There are probably a few threads that can give you more detailed information. Fotki also has some excellent pics of yard braids and twists.
I've found that yarn braids leave my hair so moisturized, and they match the texture of my hair. They are so unbelievably lightweight. After my last set, it felt like nothing was on my head at all!
They take a long time to install, and take an equal amount of time to undo. My solution is to do twists instead of braids. We'll see how that goes. I cut the yarn to the length I like in my spare time, and wash the yarn in the washing machine.
I've heard of yarn braids, but I've never worn them. From the comments here I get the impression that they are lighter than braids with extentions. What's the yarn for? Does it replace the extention? Why not just braid your own hair?
