Yarn braids, and Yarn twists!

Finally got pics done recently of the yarn twists I put in. I have had them in for about maybe a month and have redone the front, they were growing so fast! (please forgive the corny fake-photoshoot background, was doing a test to figure out my poses  )

How do the yarn braids effect your edges? I want a protective style but micros ruined my edges. I'm fine haired. Do any of yall have fine hair?

I LOVE THESE - any recommendations on yarn? I don't think I'll do them any time soon, though, but I'd like to stock up on some thread just in case :D

OK I have no idea on how these are done. What type of yarn is used, and what is the technique for installing them? Is it the same as using synthetic hair or Marley hair for twists? Someone pls. educate me cuz I don't have time to watch YT vids right now but these are gorgeous OP! I love them!

Yarn braids are a great PS! I did them this summer and retained all of my growth. The best part is when I take them out my hair doesn't feel dry, even if I've been slacking on moisturizing. The older they get the more they look like dreads. In the last weeks before I take them down I've even had people who've seen them up close compliment me on my dreads.

adamson I use Red Heart Super Saver yarn. It's inexpensive and the color doesn't bleed when you shampoo and condition it. Which ever brand you use make sure it's acrylic yarn because wool will lock into your hair :nono:

This is a video BlackOnyx77 made, It's a great How To vid:

I don't have any hair pics, these are just random pictures that were taken this summer and a pic of what the Red Heart yarn looks like. The first one was about a month into wearing them and the second was a few days before I took them out.

acrylic yarn is used. Do NOT use wool yarn, as your hair will begin to loc. And you really just braid like you would with hair. You can use as many or little pieces as you like. For braiding, I've use 2 strands (folded to make 4) and 3 (folded to make 6). And watching YT really does help. That is how I figured out how to do it. Blackonyx77 is who I watched. She demonstrated botht he 2 and 3 strand method. For upkeep, I would use a leave-in conditioner and regular water in a spray bottle, spritzing my hair once to two times a day. I washed my hair in the braids. When dry the braids are really light, but do get heavy when wet (like if you had a wet piece of clothing on your head).

they dont do any harm to my edges because i dont do them super tight around my edges or as small as the micros which seem to be the culprit in ruining edges!

i have thick hair and i think as long as the braids arent done so tight or dmall ur edges will be ok.

Glamourstrukk i love your dreads! i wanted to know how many pieces or yarn did you use to do urs? they look so good! i want to try to do some long braids for the fall/early winter and i was thinking of using reg synthetic hair but i think i might use yarn again because ultimately it will still be cheaper. i saw your blog and u said it took you four days?! omgosh. i guess if i want to have them at waist length i better suck it up.

again your braids REALLY do look like locs tho. i might have to cop this style. :look:

Thanks! I think if I had thinner hair like my mom's it wouldn't have taken as long. Lol. I did them by looping two pieces together and using my hair as the third strand until it ran out and I had to borrow half of one of the "yarn strands". I used a bundle and a half of yarn. It isn't uncomfortable to do these, just time consuming!

I support you doing long ones!!

^^my hair thick too! thats why i think it took me 17 hrs just to do below shoulder length braids!! I be tryin to make the parts bigger but it never works out. But if i do them waist length i am definetly doing big parts! im going to probably do the parts a lil smaller than how solange has her braids now...i think they are so cute!!

Hey ladies. I am 7 braids into these yarn braids... And I need advice. Number one, my braids look bumpy and not straight. It still looks okay but not what I was expecting.... Numero dos, my left hand and arm has started falling asleep/tingling. I have never had this problem when putting my hair into twists... And I am not even far in!!! Should I just stop and take them out? Sigh. I hope someone can help soon.

I am going to try yarn twists. MyI already started but am not happy. It is so hard parting in the back any suggestions? Also I want small braids like black onyxx or Beautifulbrwnbabydoll do you think they are parting or just grabbing and going at it?

Any more info on yarn twists? I've done braids before, but don't know if twists require the same yarn. Are they fluffy? If anyone has pics please share!

eta...nvmI googled it. I want the kind of twists that are big and fluffy looking and I'm not sure if a certain type of yarn is used or not.

here's my latest set of yarn braids. i love them! here recently, i've been experimenting with adding colored yarn. i created a bottom layer of jewel-toned blue, with black braids above. i've also bought some jewel-toned purple to slip in for my next set, lol. i've been wearing yarn braids foreva:) they're a great protective style.:grin::grin:

Tk yours look great. Nice pop of color and the purple should look nice. Did you do them yourself?

thanks rain:) yes, i did them myself. i prefer the grab-n-go method when it comes to parting. i used to do comb parts, but the extra time it adds, plus the fact that the parts are hidden once my new growth comes in, lol, made me give up that approach.

Well I suck at twisting so I went for braids. I am going to dip them again I wanted more waves.

This thread is tempting me to do yarn braids again. I got a ton of compliments, but it took 3 days for me to put them in! And I don't think that included the measuring and cutting of the yarn. I pre-cut and measured each piece to make sure they were all the same length before installing. They were also hot like wearing a blanket on your head. After taking them out, I didn't want to do it again until the weather became cool.

Y'all got me excited to try these out. But I will have to wait until after my workout tomorrow. Because I need to DC and wash the sweat out first.

I believe I got it from kinkykurlyqueen on YouTube. It is basically grabbing your hair from the outside and tying it. And you keep going until you reach the bottom. I think I've also seen it on the bronzegoddess CHANNEL. She has locs. In phone right now but when I get to computer I'll see if I can find it.

Yarn twists, accessorizing with assorted scarves.

I lurve them.

ellebelle88, I tried finding the link but i was unable to. i really could have sworn that KKG or BG had it, but was not lucky in finding. i hope my explanation was good enough. If not, just let me know, and I'll try to explain better. I really love that style when I have extensions. It is so quick and easy but has a big impact.

kandiekj100 No problem. Thank you. I will continue to be on the lookout for any tutorials I see. It is a nice hairstyle!
