Wrote an Article about LHCF, Help Me with Another!

I'm planning on a big trip to NYC to meet with editors at the annual American Society of Journalists and Authors conference, and a an editor for Essence will be there and I'm hoping to get some face time with her. I wrote an article with LHCF about a year ago for Ebony Jetago. Now, I'm hoping to spark some interest with Essence. Are there any ideas in black hair care that haven't been reported on to death? Anything you'd like to see be reported? Let me know, the meeting is in April! Thanks in advance!

Bump, Bump, Bump!!! I'm sure a lot has been beaten to death, so Ima take My time and think of Some! but in the mean Time!

The benefits of natural products (Take us back to Africa and my homeland of Trinidad) such as Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil and Butter. I didn't know anything about Shea Butter in its Pure Raw and Unrefined State until I was browsing through Etsy.com.

Put down the grease; pick up the moisturizer.

No, your 8 year old does not need a relaxer.

When your hair hits your shoulders, pin it up; you will see results, honest.

Dunno if these have been reported to death or not (I certainly have never read about them in any blac hair magazine I've seen...or any place outside of the hair boards), but they're just some thoughts.

Yes, that's a good idea. I could even tie it to the economy: Make your own natural hair products and the benefits of do so. Thanks!

That just gave me another idea: Online Natural Hair Stars! I need a list of five or so. Curly Nikki is one, how about four more?

I've got to second this suggestion  Across the boards here, natural products -- and even that more women are relying more on natural products (add castor oil) -- or making their own concoctions at home.

Are natural products producing better results than commercial products? From reading a lot of posts lately, I'd say yes. If fewer women relied on commercial hair care products (including those that claim to have natural ingredients), how much of an impact, if any, would this have on the industry?
Sareca has a great thread on Life Without HairCare products that may hint at the next wave in hair/body care, IMHO. :yep:

Pink Skates is a natural hair Diva. She has her own board/site.

I think one of the Admin. (Allandra?) is Natural.

There is a famous hair braider in Atlanta (she sells her own hair products-Wealthy): T.W.
Taja (sp) Walsid (sp). Something like that.

I would love to read an article about LHCF itself. How our attitudes about hair on LHCF are so different from real life. But I wouldn't paint the picture that our attitudes are better (even though we know they are) but just different and let the reader draw their own conclusion. LHCF truly is an anomaly and I think the average reader would be pleasantly surprised to learn about our cozy little world.

Even better if the article is presented as an antithesis to the mindset that Chris Rock put out there in Good Hair. Just my 2 cents. Good luck--what a great opportunity for you!

Love this suggestion featuring a member like Sareca. Maybe even suggest a follow-up piece to track her progress.

I agree with discussing the benefits of natural products for curly textured hair :yep: You can also discuss what protective styling is and how curbing the amount of heat used on our hair can help it from breaking as well.

The big discussion would be an alternate to relaxers...BKT! There are formaldehyde free versions that allow clients to straighten their hair without the use of damaging chemicals for longer periods of time while protecting the hair with Keratin - the building blocks of hair.

Yes, African American Women, who Relax, can also achieve, Long, Healthy Hair, with some TLC! Its not impossible!!! Its a Few of Us that exist! Lol!!!

Nothing much to add here except (oh darn, I got alot to say but I'll just keep it short), LHCF is making such a difference. Everytime I think of the impact this forum has had on my life and how many more people could be impacted if we share this forum, it is astounding. Everyday I am inspired by members here. I try to do my part to share whatever information I can to those who are receptive because I truly believe all women of color need to learn how to take care of their hair and stop the cycle of hair ignorance.

I agree with CurlTalk about put down the grease and pick up the moisturizer. For as much as the words "moisture" and "moisturizer" are thrown around (especially in regards to natural hair), many women have no idea what they mean. When my mother used to tell me that my hair was dry, I put grease on it until she stopped saying that.

An article about detangling (explaining what it is and providing different detangling techniques) would also be great. I'd never heard of detangling before this board. I used to just start combing my hair after removing braids. Women need to know that they are not supposed to have a throbbing pain after they comb their hair.

My lil' 2 cents

There is nothing wrong with showing your natural hair
limited heat and the importance of heat protectants
moisture and protein balance
stretching relaxers

If I knew about these methods before joining LHCF...*sigh*

Agreed! Also the importance of reading ingredients! I never knew that it mattered what You put in Your Hair! I used to just pick up any Ole' Thing! Its just as important as reading ingredients on the Food You eat! :yep:

This is way OT, but I just had to say how soft and pretty your braidout looks, T4G!

These and lots of others are great ideas. However, I don't think they are going to mess with advertising dollars like this, e.g. they are not going to specifically say an 8 year old doesn't need a relaxer because that will mess with those just for me dollars or grease for those african pride dollars. I think that is why they put basically the same articles out on hair care every season. Just playing it safe for those dollars and feeding it to people who won't or can't do their own research.

I like all of these ideas. Especially the one about standing up to stylists. People should really strive to become experts on their own hair, and not just let a stylist do whatever to their hair because they're the supposed "expert." I use to do this.

Now I'm the expert on my own hair (took me years to get to the point). No one knows better than me what my hair does and doesn't like. I haven't been to a stylist in years, but am currently "auditioning" new ones (for a trim I'd like to get). But I need to see them in action before I let them in my hair. I've rejected 2 already and am still searching.

I'm being my own advocate when it comes to my hair. :yep:

southercitygirl said it all. I also would like to add sleeping on a silk pillow case and in silk scarf.

Watching the clothing you wear cause it can rub the hair out.

Putting a silk scarf or piece over ur car head rest.

This too! In fact, a whole series can be done on hair growth vs. retention because a lot of women really don't understand the difference between the two. We're so used to saying "my hair isn't growing" when we don't see it getting longer, but the truth is that we're not retaining the length. I say that a whole series can be done on it because growth and retention is directly related to product usage and healthy hair care practices.
