I bought my glycerin at the BSS. It's 100% vegetable glycerin. I mix it with distilled water, castor oil, aloe vera juice, and an EO. :heart2: it. It's cheap and it makes a lot.

Subscribing to this thread! :yep: Glycerin was mentioned to me a while back and I was supposed to buy some but never did.

I DEFINITELY and going to have to try out a mix...I think I might do a glycerin/distilled water/aloe/jojoba mix and add a few drops of some type of EO for scent...

Can someone please recommend how MUCH I should try? For instance, 1 part glycerin to 1 part water to 1 part aloe....etc, etc.

I'd like to know to, im going to make a spray as well, because i rather spray when i have braids/twists. The mix u mentioned sounds nice...

that's great! I also love my aloe/glycerin/water/saa mix and consider it one of the best hair products I use!

...Ok sorry i had to get a bit loud i am SO happy. A huge thank you to the ladies that reccomended the 50/50 aloe vera and glycerin mix. I've had it in for 54 minutes and this is the SOFTEST and MOISTURIZED my hair have EVER been straight after washing it! I would never co-wash/ wash daily, because my hair would always be dry and course. And the companies that produced the products i once loved changed the ingredients, but now i have Glycerin and Aloe!!!...Then again it would make sense that these products would work together, they are the key ingredients in my old products. I cannot stress how beautifully soft and moisturized my hair feels!!!!!! I definately won't be shaving it off in a frantic fit ever again, its so soft! :yep:

THANK YOU AGAIN LADIES

:bighug:

My hair love Aloe Vera, jojoba oil, glycerin mix, my hair is also really moisturized and soft after using this combo. I'm glad you found something that makes you and your hair happy!!!

How much of these products are you using? Ratio? Proportions?

Specifically. For example: 2 tsp aloe, 1 tbs glycerin....

Are you adding them to your conditioners? If so, how much are you adding??

Thanks Ladies! I'm trying to get a concensus of what everyone has experimented with...

I have the Silk Amino Acids, Honeyquat, and Organic Aloe Vera Gel...

ETA: Sorry - I just realized someone just inquired about this - I still would like to know as far as specific measurements instead of parts... Thanks!

Some people mentionned aloe vera juice (the one we can ingest i guess)
Others mentionned the aloe vera gel (not to use internally. I've read about it and there are mentions of possible dangerous products.
Who tried both versions?
whice one do you prefer?

I'll enclose the link to the amazon review on the aloe vera gel I intended to buy
http://www.amazon.com/review/produc...ts=1&colid=&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

Please elaborate on this...

ETA: I would not buy that product! It seems very misleading. You can by 100% aloe juice (e.g Lilly of the desert), however for the most part unless it is just aloe pulp/fillet the gels are not 100% because they need to add ingredients to make it a gel...

i'll be trying this mix soon! I already have a spray bottle containing glycerine and water; it only makes sense to add the aloe...maybe that's what I've been missing for more moisture.

Well I waited but no one answered so I just bought the Aloe Vera Gel. I already have jojoba oil and glycerin in a bottle. I did find honeycombs recipe: Ingredients: 1oz jojoba oil, 1oz glycerin, 4oz aloe vera gel. I also added 1 tbsp of honey, 1 tbsp of coconut oil. I will add a few drops of essential oils for fragrance.

I posted this in the recipe board, but maybe I'll get an answer here.

I found some Aloe Vera Juice (FOTE) at CVS today. The label says that it is 99.8% pure aloe vera.

The ingredients list is:

Organic Aloe Vera Gel, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate (A food preservative at 1/10 of 1%)

I'm assuming that this is almost as good as the 100% kind. It costs $10.69 for a 1 gallon jug. I think it is in the laxative section.

Would this work as well as the 100% brands that you ladies are using? I want to be as sure as possible before I shell out for it.

Sorry for the late reply.
This might be long.
Let me copy/paste the contet from the link I gave you guys. This is where I found the warnings:

Grossly Misleading Labeling, July 30, 2007
By Dale E. Havill (Oregon) - See all my reviews

Although not technically a lie, putting 100% in the label is grossly misleading considering all the additives in this product. Personally, I consider it criminally misleading. Although I have bought a lot of this product in the past when it was less adulterated, I'll never buy any Fruit of the Earth Product again.

I recommend "Aloe Vera Gelly" produced by "Lily of the Desert".

Thanks to the reviewers below who described the chemicals.

I would AVOID this product!!, March 11, 2008
By Average Joe - See all my reviews
I was definitely skeptical when I saw a tube of this stuff on the shelf at my local drugstore boldly proclaiming "100% Gel"----OF COURSE it's 100% GEL----it's NOT 100% Aloe Vera though, obviously!! Secondly, I strongly suggest that anyone considering this product should Google ALL of the other ingredients. You'll probably wonder, as I did, if this stuff will CAUSE more problems than it CURES! I pitched my tube out immediately after reading what this other stuff is. One of the ingredients, Diazolidinyl urea, for example, is a KNOWN CARCINOGEN and has been banned in Europe! Also, although the label boldly proclaims "NO ALCOHOL", you will find that one of the ingredients is INDEED a "tri-alcohol"!! You simply cannot trust advertising and I will be more wary before buying similar products in the future and will NOT do business with a company like Fruit of the Earth who tries to be so sneaky and borders on dishonesty.

STOP! THIS IS NOT 100% ALOE, July 5, 2007
By KV Trout (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I'm writing amazon about this FALSE ADVERTISING.
The top of their page says "Fruit Of The Earth 100% Aloe Vera Gel" but the bottle does not contain 100% aloe, it contains a gel which has a bunch of (possibly dangerous) additives added to it!

Shame on Fruit of the Earth for putting all this crap which MIGHT BE carcinogenic in their aloe which people use because they want a NATURAL product.

I'd give this 0 stars if I could!

Wish they would leave out the Formaldehyde. , March 8, 2007
By shirosands (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
It's 100% gel but not necessarily 100% Aloe Vera... obviously. I like the fact they use Tocopherol Acetate, which is Vitamin E, it is probably added as an antioxidant and preservative. Unfortunately they also feel it is necessary to add Carbomer 940, a synthetic thickener, to change the consistency. This is supposedly non-toxic but like many chemicals used in cosmetics, it's not clinically tested and who really knows. The Triethanolamine is used to solubilize and reduce the acidity of the Carbomer but should be nontoxic. EDTA is a chelator; it is not really a problem either as such.

Of more concern is the addition of the perservatives/antimicrobials DMDM Hydantoin and Diazolidinyl Urea; these chemicals work by releasing Formaldehyde into the product, which kills any microbes and is great for the product but not so great for you, because Formaldehyde is a potent carcinogen as well as an irritant that can cause allergic reactions.

Although this product is only applied topically, and the concentration of Formaldehyde is hopefully too low to cause irritation and cancer, that is not known. I would be interested to know the exact concentrations of each ingredient in the final product.

Good things: this is otherwise a decent product that dries very quickly, and makes a non-greasy Hair gel and skin moisturizer. I have mixed fine loose glitter into it to make cheap glitter gel, that would actually stay on my skin and hair instead of the glitter falling right off, like when you mix glitter with regular lotion.

Bad things: the formaldehyde-producing preservatives; you would think a company by the name of Fruit of the Earth should actually use some earth-friendly preservatives. As an alternative I suggest exploring your local health food or supplement store and searching for an aloe vera gel that does not contain any strange unpronouncable/chemical/synthetic ingredients. Even in small quantities these things can cause allergies or other health problems, and it only takes one mutation to start a cancer. Or pick up your own Aloe Vera plant; they are surprisingly tough and prolific.

I dunno, maybe they're crazy.
But I want to get your feedback. What would you say? :

1. "aloe vera juice"?
2. "ALoe vera gel"?
3. "Girl, just take whatever".:lachen:

I just used the following mix in a 4oz spray bottle: a little less than 2oz aloe juice, a little less than 2oz glycerin, a capful of SAA, and 3 drops of lemon EO (for scent). DD's natural hair detangled easily and her 2-strand twists are soft, shiny and hanging lower than ever before. I love this stuff!!!

I used a glycerin/water/aloe vera gel/castor oil/aphogee essential oils mix today and my hair is moisturized and the curls popped more than ever!! This is definately a staple:grin:

Awesome Crissi!

I have in my spray bottle water/aloe vera/glycerin/SAA. Isn't it nice how individual products you already have in your house can come together to make a great hair product?
