Forgive me if this thread already exists. I recently turned 35 and have been on a hair journey for 2 years. Finally got it nailed and finally seeing results. But my concern is that just when I've started liking my hair for the first time ever it'll start to get bad due to age.

So if there are any ladies out there 35 and older with BSL or longer who don't mind outing themselves age wise lol please check in with the following. Thanks so much and God bless!

1. Age
2. Hair length
3. Hair health (any damage?)
4. Relaxed or natural?
5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do.
6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc.
7. A current picture if you have one!

Thanks so much ladies because I'm a little concerned so I'm hoping there's a bunch of you out there!

1. Age - 42 years wise
2. Hair length - 1 1/2 inch from waist
3. Hair health (any damage?) - There was initial damage due to my ignorance and now that I know better I do better. The damage came from overprocessing of relaxers and relaxing too soon. Thank God through patience and TLC I have recovered.
4. Relaxed or natural? Relaxed - Design Essentials
5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do. I can't stretch longer than eight (8) weeks otherwise my hair breaks really, really bad. I use Mizani's Bontanifyl Shampoo which I LOVE. It's very moisturizing and smells soooo good. I use a cocktail that consists of Silicone Mix, Mizani's Hydrafuse and It's A Ten Miracle Mask. My hair is so moisturized and no need to follow up with a leave-in because you don't need one after rinsing.
6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc. *My schedule is super hectic and doesn't allow a lot of time for exercising so I implement it where I can. For example I take the stairs whenever I have meetings on different floors; Park further away from the door when I'm shopping or running errands; *Less is more. I find the less I do to my hair the better.; *Deep conditioning is essential and a must and I have a steamer which maximizes the effectiveness of my conditioners.; *Water and a good multi-vitamin.

Thank you so much TonicaG ! On the mobile version, can't figure out how to officially thank. You're my new hair inspiration! Any current pics?

I'm 38 and working on BSL... Currently APL and natural.

Great post OP... I need to see a little drool-worthy hair this morning!

Pics Please Everyone!

1. Age - 47

2. Hair length - Almost WL stretched

3. Hair health (any damage?)- Pretty healthy, no problems, no damage

4. Relaxed or natural? Natural

5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do. Co-wash once a week or every two weeks. Hair is normally twisted for twist-outs

6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc. I do eat healthy, keeping from heat and low maintenance styles have attributed to length--I also exercise almost daily

7. A current picture if you have one! In my siggy and avatar :)

I started my hair journey @ 38 years old :)

1. Age 34.5 (35 in December. Does that count, lol?)

2. Hair length BSL

3. Hair health (any damage?) Since I'm transitioning, I'm closely monitoring any breakage or split ends

4. Relaxed or natural? Transitioning to Natural

5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do.
Cowash once a week; Deep condition once a week; Moisturize and seal as needed; Shampoo as needed

6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc. I always had long hair so growing it wasn't a challenge. I wanted healthy hair this time.

1. 41

2. BSL

3. Splits and Knots. Otherwise, it's healthy.

4. Natural. Started my Natural Hair journey Dec 1997. Before then I was on my Relaxed Hair journey for 10 years.

5. Wash with Shampoo soap every 1.5 - 2 weeks. Condition with one of Hairveda's conditioner. Detangle, slap on some oil and twist. Spray with Wave Nouveau Finishing Mist every few days and Seal with oil.

6. Going back to what grew my hair like weed - Wet look/dry curl spray. Wanted Leisure Curls spray but found Wave Nouveau - near enough. Other contributing factors? Long hair definitely runs in my Dad's family and that's where I got most of my texture/curl pattern/thickness from.

7. Nope sorry - have to taken my word for it!

There are quite a few ladies over forty on the site with BSL and beyond. All of them have gorgeous hair.

1. I started my journey after 35. I'm somewhere between 35 and 40 now.

2. I'm between Mid back and waist length (I've got a few strands at WL)

3. My hair is pretty healthy but my ends could be better. But my hair is healthier now than it's ever been.

4. I'm natural.

5. Just wash condition and either bun or braidout mostly. I've gotten kind of lazy with my hair.

6. I think being natural and patience is what allowed my hair to grow. Even though my hair would grow it was always breaking off or I was cutting damage when it was relaxed. My diet and exercise patterns could be better. I take B vit supplements. My mom has short hair but it's full- no thinning and dark (very little gray). I have only one ancestor who had ultra long hair. I haven't taken any pics since last jan but you can get an idea in my avatar.

I'm so confused... what would happen after 35 for your hair to 'get bad'?

marta9227,
Ova' 35 checkin' in here:grin:.
1. Age- Well, I just said over 35 right?!:giggle:
2. Hair length- Kissing BSL as in there with longest layers but not what I consider full BSL.3. Hair health (any damage?)- Nope none more than your ocassional splits, SSK, and breakage. My hair is in the best condition since childhood-easily:look:.
4. Relaxed or natural? 90% natural. Will likely trim the last texlaxed section between Dec 11 and Mar 11. Tryna reach an aesthetic goal before then.:yep:
5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do. I keep it simple- CW, lv-in, seal, PS using mostly non-commercial organic products with the exception of MT.6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc. I am 100% convinced diet and exercise play a huge factor in my hair/ overall health. I am practically pescaterian. My mom is stretching now b/c of the changes she's seen with me & DDs 1 and 3 but hasn't been much past EL in years.:nono: She was a typical AA hair abuser.7. A current picture if you have one!
You can look at a pic from my album on the forum to see where I started and where I am now. HTH
I'm not convinced that being over 35 is an automatic death sentence for our hair or anything else we wanna do!

I was unaware that something happens to our hair after age 35

1. Age-38, started hair journey at 32
2. Hair length-mbl
3. Hair health (any damage?)a couple of setbacks in my life. all from overprocesing. right now it's fine
4. Relaxed or natural?-relaxed
5. Basic reggie including how long you stretch if you do. touchup 2-3 times a year, wash every 2 weeks
6. Any other factors you think contribute to your long hair ie. diet and exercise, does your mom have long hair, etc. -low manipulation, no combing except on wash day

does something happen to womens hair after 35?

It's not what is happening with the hair as much as it is something happening to the body or to the scalp. Some women start going through hormonal changes in their 30s and some women's hair practices catch up with them. But if you have a good regimen and keep your scalp healthy then you can bypass a lot of that.

There's a lot more information out now to help many women avoid those issues.

But this only impacts some women.

Every woman won't experience this, but hormones start doing a little shift after age 35. Also perimenopause could start at this time as well. Some ladies could start shedding their hair until the hormones are settled again. However diet, exercise and nutrition can help to combat this problem. Most ladies won't have to deal with this.there are a lot of ladies on this board that are still growing their hair just fine into their fifties and beyond.

I'll post for my mom.

She's in her late 40s and is a bit past BSL. She is relaxed. She does rollersets and braids her hair nightly. She stretches for about 2 months and then relaxes at home. She's a very healthy eater and exercises regularly.

Hair issues - lots of shedding (although im hoping my tea rinse recommendation is helping!). I honestly think it might be hormonal because it is OTT.

I never heard of hair changing in 30s always read its 40s and 50s where people will notice thinning etc

Intresting post none the less:yep:

My edges started thinning when I was 35. I had lost half of the hair in my crown before I was 40. People's hormones just shift at different times. 40s and 50s are more common but there are women who start in their 30s.

A lot of people hide their thinning with their hairstyles, weaves or wigs so its not so obvious.
