Woe is my hair...

I did a bkt treatment last week and am not raving about it that's for sure. There were too many steps and too much heat. There are beads of crap in my hair strands causing my hair to feel hard to the touch and breaking when combing. Fast forward to today. I decided to do a 2 min aphoghee since I was having so much breakage so I did it say under the dryer fir 15 then followed up with a 2 hour DC and my hair was impossible to comb through. All of my hair appeared to be in the comb. I tried doing a acv rinse in which I burned my eyes out and thought I was going blind but that didn't help. I moisturized with kt and castor oil then blow dried only to lose more hair. Anybody have any insight as to what could have happened? I should mention that I am transitioning and am just about shoulder length in most places. I shampooed, did aphogee then used, silk elements cholesterol DC. I was going to flat iron but now am scared to.

I am definitely not knowledgeable about bkt and I have to be honest, I'm not a fan of the process. I think at this point heat is definitely not an option. Did you do the bkt on your relaxed hair as well? I'm afraid that you've taken your hair to far. I'm sorry your going through all of this and I hope someone can help you nurse your hair back to health.

You are suffering from major protein overload. First your bkt which is a Brazilian KERATIN treatment (keratin being a strong protein) was put in your hair. Then you gave yourself the aphoghee 2 min treatment, which is another protein treatment, and the SE Cholesterol also contains some protein. This is gonna make your hair stiff, hard, and brittle which can cause your hair to snap off.

I suggest you stay away from direct heat and deep condition with a moisturizing deep conditioner (with as little protein in it as possible) until your hair begins to feel back to normal again.

I don't know what "bkt" is so ummm yeah. When doing an ACV rinse you need to dilute it with distilled water. You mention breakage..... but do you really mean shedding instead, which is whole strands of hair coming out, not small pieces? With breakage (small pieces snapping) I would not recommend the flat iron. It sounds like you are either in your shedding phase or you have to much protein in your hair and not enough moisture. I find it is best and easier to comb my own hair through if I apply a moisturizing conditioner to wet hair instead of towel drying first, it gives me more slip.... And then I just squeeze out the excess water and leave on for about 30 minutes. I tried transitioning once and it lead to alot of shedding and hard to manage hair, so I just relaxed and said forget going natural.... I've been relaxing my hair for 21 years now.

Thanks for the info...I was thinking protein overload as well. I have to now go buy some moisturizing DC but I will wait until tomorrow for that. for now I just did a slick Back bun and will worry about it tomorrow. I thought with the two textures and the fragility of my transitioning hair that protein would be good, boy I over did it

And to top it off u put on an acv rinse, which if too strong can leave ur hair hard. Also the point of an ACV rinse is to seal your cuticle, sealing your cuticle before you do a follow up DC makes no sense. Then u blow dried hair that was described as hard and breaking(read brittle) days after applying excessive heat for prolonged periods.

Doing way too much.

I have to keep reminding myself if why I wanted to go natural in the first place cause this is hard

I used a BKT and loved it. My hair isn't breaking off any more than it usually does.

It sounds like you super saturated your strands (I.e. white beads that remained) yielding the primary damage. I think the directions do fail to warn against the drying effects.

I definitely used a lot on each thought I was supposed to

((BIG HUG))

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. It seems that they have nothing to do with the act of transitioning but using the wrong method to transition with.

Many ladies who are transitioning speak about the importance of lots of moisture and as little manipulation as possible. I know it may seem that straight hair requires less manipulation, but IMO it may require more (daily combing and styling). Whereas had you tried doing braid/twist out styles, you could use your fingers to manipulate your hair. And textured hair is a little more forgiving of imperfections.

Maybe you could add honey and EVOO to a moisturizing DC and use that. I would suggest clarifying first but I'm afraid that it'll be too harsh on your hair. Maybe you could dilute the clarifying poo and then follow with the moisturizing DC.

Either way good luck! :)

I would have to agree with everyone else, your hair sounds sooooo overloaded with protein at the moment. Handle it with care and to really get the moisture back into the hair, do overnight deep conditioning with moisturizing conditioners with ZERO protein.

All the folks I know (from this Forum) that have been very successful with BKTs and those sorts of "Treatments" are Extremely Cautious about the Products they use on their Hair.

They are always reading the ingredients of products to ensure that nothing interfere's with the BKT.

They have that 'product' thing nailed down, so they don't have adverse after-effects of the BKT.

I would say, go back and read some of the BKT/Keratin Threads. And most of all, find out which products play well with BKT'ed Hair.

I think once you get the "do's & don'ts" in the product area, your hair may greatly improve.
