Wigs and flying question

Quick question

I've never traveled with a wig on. I want to wear a wig but it had the little straps with the hook on. Will that go off in the scanner?

I'm trying to preemptively avoid embarrassment

It depends on the airport and the sensitivity of their machines. Earlier this year I traveled to three airports in three weeks and got stopped all three times and ended up with some TSA agent's gloved hands in my head. But I've also been hair frisked rocking a braid and curl. Guess my hair looks suspicious.

Be careful with clips or metal pins. I wear my wigs but i don't put anything in it and if i need to i carry some in my carry on. My friend wore bobby pins in her hair and jfk-nyc-tsa gave her a thorough feeling up i mean they messed up her hair and i saw her undies because they kept tugging at her pants. Please no metal some airports are funny. Other than that it's fine.

yea I'm in nyc and that's where my bobby pin was detected. I had to take it out. I was wearing my own hair pulled back in a bun and I had one bobby pin in the nape area.

In your experience, has the little metal hook thingy on the adjustable strap caused you any problems?

No the metal hook on the wig was fine. I went to chicago and mexico with no static. Enjoy your trip you should be fine.

I work out of various airports, wigs are fine, bobby pins too... Metal is accumulative on the body, so the more met, you have, the more the machine will be set off.

As someone said above, different airports have different sensitivities.
You will probably get a lot of TSA fingers in your hair though, checking your wigs and your braids

Well I did get pulled aside and TSA gave me a head massage. But I just laughed about it. I wasn't asked to remove anything so it's all good.

I just traveled last week, and had my scalp "searched" even though I was wearing my own hair down and loose (no pins, clips, etc.)!!! So I'd just wear the wig and be cute, cause they might just search it anyway.

Good question, @FemmeCreole. I just started wearing a wig and will have to fly soon. I've gone through body scanners multiple times with a hair clip and bobby pins and never had any problems (I did have a scanner refer to the bobby pins once, but it was only to point them out, not to do any additional searching), but now that I'm wearing a wig, I'm nervous. :nervous2:

Had you gone thorugh a body scanner or just the metal detector?

I've flown while baggying under my wig which must have looked strange in the scanner but never been stopped or patted down!

Don't think a small amount of metal (think about bra claps) will set off any alarms.

I've gone through multiple body scanners in 3 different airports since then. The only time I got pulled out was at a Long Island airport, where the back comb on the wig was detected. I just told the female TSA that I was wearing a wig. She gave me a minor "scalp massage" and sent me in my way. I went through Nola and Vegas with no issues.

My wigs have small metal wires covered in ribbon near the ears. I was paranoid so I cut those out. I flew with no problems. Not sure if my efforts helped.

I'm laughing at the rapid heart rate and heavy sweating that must be going on for people wearing wigs for the first time to the airport. I could not. They'd think I was transporting drugs or something the way I'd be looking around all worried.

I got felt up when I was wearing a wig. It was a woman and she pretty much assumed it was a bobby pin in my hair but she was required to feel anyways. It was really quick and didn't really mess up anything.

Just stay calm and you shouldn't be sent to the little room for a cavity search.

I just came from vacation. I wear wigs and put several Bobbi pins throughout. I was a little nervous after reading this post. I left the country and even had to go through customs. I did not have any problems. This is the unit I wore
