Why is my hair uneven?!?!?!

Okay I don't know if this is just me or what, but the left side of my hair is always worse than my right. Right now the right side is thicker and longer and usually when this happens I CUT IT but I don't wanna cut it I just want my hair to grow the same!!! /images/graemlins/mad.gif Does anyone have any ideas on how I can speed up my left side?

Your hair will not grow at the same rate on all sides. You may notice that at the back, where there is less manipulation, it grows the fastest. At the sides, if you tuck the hair behind your ear frequently, you may notice slower growth there. Try massaging your scalp to encourage the nutrients in your blood to flow there and nourish your hair. You may also want to try a trim to even it up.

I have the exact same problem as you do. I mean the same sides and all. So this is what I did:

1. Switched up wrapping sides. I noticed that I would always wrap in one direction.
2. Changed the side I slept on. I always slept on my right side, which gave me the impression that maybe I was hindering the growth from my scalp, since I laid on that side of my head.
3. Pay more attention to the weaker side.
4. Be much more gentler to the weaker side.
5. If you wear parts, part your hair on the left side. Give that side of the scalp some air. I always used to part on the right.
6. Extra protect the weaker side. For example, I make sure I coat the ends more on that side opposed to the already healthy side.
7. Make sure there is less stress on the weaker side. Like, no tugging, etc.

Overall, almost everyone has a spot somewhere on their head that seems to be lagging behind the others in growth. These were just some little tips I've discovered, to help hinder breakage, thinning, etc.

my sister and i have the same problem. one side is thick and grows fast like my dad's hair and the other is thin like my mom's. maybe it's a mixture of their hair genes. i dunno. /images/graemlins/confused.gif but i do know that i usually just get a trim when my hair looks just too shabby! or you can try and just trim the right side to keep some of the length . i'm still in the process of finding something that can grow the other side faster. also you might wanna try massaging that side more. i've been doing that and so far my hair has grown more evenly than usual. another thing i do is use a lesser amount of products on my left side since it's thinner. i hope i helped a little bit. i know how it feels and i definitely know how hard it is trying to keep your length. so i'll try to help the best way i can. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have/had this problem too. My left side is about 1" longer than my right. Plus my back grows way faster than my front and crown. I used to trim my left all the time to even it up with my right but then the back would all stop growing for months (just the front and sides would grow). So, I decided to let it grow how it will and when I'm finally out of braids I'll begin evening it up. I don't know if I threw it out of balance when I trimmed the left (happened a few times, every time I would trim the left I would hit a growth wall. I personally think that's why I was a bra strap length for almost 7 months) but I swear the growth would slow remarkably in the back only. Now that I stopped evening, the left is slightly longer (not as bad as before) but the right is coming along as well. I wonder why that is....hmmmmm. What I have been doing is focusing on my front and the right side a bit more (trying to keep it in the game) than my left.

That's an interesting theory. It makes a lot of sense. I have always wondered why my back grows a lot faster the the crown and sides.

For me it's my right side that always seems shorter AND frizzier. For a while I thought it was because of the way I sleep but since I wrap my hair up in a doo rag everynight, use a satin pillowcase and pretty much toss and turn on both sides I'm not sure.
But the thing the drives me crazy most is dealing with the different textures all over my friggin head. I would generally classify myself as 4A. But the right side of my head is really more like 4B and I'm starting to think the crown and some of the front is more 3C. For the longest time I thought maybe I was going bald in my crown because when I ran my hands through my head it always seemed to slip through there more easily and to be not as thick. After months of worrying and staring at the top and back of my head and NOT going bald I realized the hair is just different there. What's annoying is trying to style it with no heat and get all the sections to behave the same way. /images/graemlins/mad.gif Thank god for S-Curl, gel, and drawstring ponytails.

I too share in the uneven abyss /images/graemlins/smirk.gif. It's the left side and the front edges and the crown area. Since my last trim I've noticed that it has started to even up in the front and sides some( more so than it was before the trim). I don't have a clue why this is but it's very annoying and I sleep on either side so I just have gave up on trying to find the culpit /images/graemlins/confused.gif. But, if one of you get some more info on this phenomenon keep us all posted /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I will do the same /images/graemlins/smile.gif

joining in...
Like faith, i've tried to even it up and all i've hit is a growth wall.. a horrible one too, like being the SAME length maybe a bit shorter b/c i've been cutting overprocessed hair out and what not for like 7 months.
My right side is shorter, thinner, frizzier and more tangly! I've been using profectiv's anti-thinning to massage my scalp w/ 2-3x's a week, i'm hoping to see a benefit from that. And i never thought i'd say this but.. I cant wait til my boyfriend leaves!!! i want to start wearing cornrows again, its the only method that's tried and true for my hair... too bad they're not teh most attractive style for me.

So then it's O.K. to use gels? I know that is probably a stupid question, but I have often been warned against it. The problem is, my hair is also uneven and I need to gel it in places to lay it down since it doesn't reach the ponytail.

I just always make sure I use gels with no alcohol in them. Like Slick Stuff and ones like that. It doesn't really get hard either but it does help to keep the hair in place. The last few times I just used some Frizz Ease, a leave in and a coupla sprays of S-Curl to keep my hair in place. I put them in while my hair is soaking and tie hair down tight with my satin scarves. When I wake up in the morning my edges and everything are nice and smooth laying down flat.
