why hair breaks at back nape?

The back of my hair seems to have broken off badly. Any clue? I tie my hair up at night but I sleep on my back. It's only the hair near nape ( neck).

Any ideas much appreciated.

I know for me now that it is winter I have to be careful of my hats, scarfs and coat colllars, because depending on the material it could catch my hairs back there.

The only thing I can think of is if you stop tying your hair tight at the back... The knot at the back may be taking some of your hair off...

I had issues with my nape when i was relaxed....but after i found the boards i found that i had to treat that part of my head seperately.

Make sure you apply deep conditioner to it, moisturize and seal it...like it's another head of hair to take care of. You might also want to put it in a horizontal braid. But take intensive care of that area. Also...try using castor oil there too as well.

HTH:)

I grew my nape out by M/S 2x/day religiously and not letting a brush touch it. Basically I treated it like it was the most delicate fiber on the planet lol (growing it out again after weave mishap *eye roll*). Switching my scarf to different positions is problematic for me so at night I coat the nape in moisturizer and oil and tie as normal and it is doing well, just my two cents HTH.

In my opinion, the best thing you can do is keep it moisturized and braided horizontally. Oh, also detangle it very carefully and softly.

Great tips in here! My nape is doing much better than before, but I still have to baby it.

I think I'll start using castor oil back there.

Make sure that your hair is off of your shoulders when you wash your neck and shoulders in the shower. The soap that you use for your body can really dry out your hair.

Coats, collars, hair on your shoulders. If relaxed, perhaps this area has weakened over time from overprocessing. Maybe save that area for last for processing. On my next TU, I will start having my stylist not process the nape with every TU or have her allow it to have very minimal processing time. I don't overly struggle with my nape but it could be stronger.

We're you able to bun?

I find that when I neglect to moisturize and seal my nape area I get single strand knots, tangles, big ole knots etc. When I pay close attention (I mean at least add moisture [water is fine] and seal with a heavier oil) my nape thrives - even if I don't braid it up.

I have that same problem. My nape only seems to do well when I keep it braided. Other than that it breaks off whether I'm relaxed or natural.

My husband reminded me, I usually twist and turn while sleeping and my scarfs come off. Many times I get up and will have to tie hair up again. I'm probably rubbing hair against pillows.
