Who still uses no lye?

Hello all,
I have ben consulting with my stylist and i am considerign goign back to a no lye. I mean the lye makes my hair appear healthy adn thick and all but my hair is not straight at all! My roots are always wavy liek I did not even perm it...even when I get it permed at the shop.
Who on this board still has a no lye? Are u still experienceing growth adn over all health with it? If I am not mistaken Adrienne was no lye until her last touch up...do u see alot of differecnce Ms Adreinne if so what might they be? Do u regret your desicion?
I feel bad for reniggiing on the lye but everything doe snot work the same for everyone and I am learnign that lye is not workign for me...Heck I am even thicking of just going all the way natural...if it was not for this humid Memphsi weather I would!

it could be that particular brand of relaxer that didnt get your hair as straight or maybe it wasnt left on for too long. not too sure. i personally dont regret my decision to go with lye over no lye because the difference in the hair is immense. i would like a better relaxer(affirm) than motions but all and all the results were smooth and silky. if lye doesnt work with you after you have tried something else than maybe no lye is the way to go. what works for some may not work for others. /images/graemlins/smile.gif God bless you all.

Thanks Azul...
I have tried liek 3 or 4 different brands and strengths and I refuse to go with super becuase my hair is soft and it will definately eb too much for it. I am gonna duble check with another stylist I know and I think I am gonna go back to no lye nad keep it moisturized really well.

What's in No Lye Relaxers??

I mean Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) and then theres (Guaindine) which is what Affirm is.

What do relaxer like Dark and Lovely and other No Lyes contain that straigthen??

Tanya ,i've been using no lye for over 6 years now and my hair agrees with it.I don't experience any dryness or breakage my hair becomes so straight and she only use a quarter amount of perm so i get two perms out of one container i use botanicals by soft and beautiful i have shoulder length hair with body and i will continue to use no lye. Remember what is good for others is not always good for you stick with what agrees with you!!! Good luck /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi mahogani,
I'm kind of new on this board (actually not so new /images/graemlins/cool.gif). Yeah, I have always preferred no lye because the lye always burns my very sensitive scalp. At the moment, I use optimum but will soon change over to soft & beautiful botanicals. I'm glad about the rave review you always give botanicals. The same person who recommended the s&b botanicals also asked me to try out nutri-ox 3 step system. I'm going to observe its effect until march. It's supposed to add body/volume to the hair. If I'm not mistaken (if I am please ignore the post), you asked how to gain volume in an old post and I thought I'd let you know.
Peace!!!

so, tonya, did you go back to no-lye?
I am seriously considering this as well. I have tried a few different lye relaxers and the African Pride-No lye trumps them all, at least appearance wise. All the hair done with the no-lye is straight-ish and shiny, and all the lye-done hair is dull, with a slightly lossened texture. It would be fine if it ALL looked like that but in comparison to the no-lye done hair it just looks frizzy

. I might really go back to my old box perm...

I've used no-lye since 1981. I have been using Sof N Beautiful Botanicals since it came out and have been able to achieve growth/length consistently -- and that was all before discovering this board.

Do you all add anything extra to your relaxers? I know several ladies here add olive oil to their lye relaxers. I was wondering if any of you have done that? I'm going to relax my sister's hair this coming weekend, and I'm debating beween lye and no lye. She has been using no lye forever!

Well actually I was transitioning...but I broke down after this wet weekend and permed my hair...I used another no lye...I love the results I get with No lye....putting a lye relaxer on my hair is like putting conditioner on it. As for adding oil...no I do not add oil becuase if I am not mistaken...oil slows down the relaxer process nad that is not what I needed. I used Designer Touch no lye and i will be postign pics soon.

The best no-lye perm I can remember was the Pink Lotion brand. No problems whatsoever. I'm glad you started this thread, Tonya, because I was surely considering going back to the no-lye. Lye perms seem to leave my hair too underprocessed for my taste. And don't even get me started on that horrible Motions Oil perm! Yuck! My mother permed her hair with the Regular one on Saturday, and her hair was so underprocessed, and Lord knows she leaves a perm in for years before she finally washes it out.

I still Use no-lye the kiddy relaxer: beautiful beginnings, but I am really considering the use of a Lye relaxer now.

Karonica,
I am with u on that one...I hated Motions Oil I have 2 almost full jars under my cabinet that I need to give away becuase it does NOTHING for me whatso ever.

You know it's funny you ladies mention that the lye doesn't do anything for you. I have been experienced this too. A mild lye relaxer does NOT straighten my hair as well as a mild no-lye relaxer. I got way better results with the no-lye, but I'm not going back because my hair was dry, but that was pre hairboard. Hummm.

It's funny nobody's mentioned discoloration of the hair by lye relaxers. My hair had a horrible bleached look with lye relaxers but since transitioning and sticking with no lye, the color of my hair has changed to black (between the jet black and color 2 in human hair pieces).
Did anyone experience this?

Well my hair changes color with perms no matter lye or no lye...but what I do to combact dryness is incorporate more moisture in my regime. For instance when i rinsed my perm out before I even shampooed I did a protein conditioner treatment. Then I shampooed and did a moisturizing conditioner nad added olive oil to it. Then when I rinse it out I rubbed a creamy leave in, WGO, and mango butter in my hair. My hair is very shiny and is well oiled but not too oily. I am gonna take pics and when i do my weekly roller sets I will alos take pics so u guys can see it while it is "fresh out the oven"
I must say this is the best my hair has looke din a whiole. My hair has a black cellophane on it and i am slowly but surely acquiring my length back. my hair has it's fullness back. I think what hurt my hair was the color on top of the perm. the perm alone is bad enough but u can have long pretty hair with a perm u just have to be "really good " to youtr hair and provide it with all the moisture that it needs. I must say I am very impressed so far.

I've been a no-lye girl for life. I have bra strap length hair that's strong even though everyday I have several strings of it all around my desk from pulling it out as a habit. lol It's pretty thick, though, and I haven't had any problems.

My stylist uses Affirm No-Lye for sensitive scalps and I've been using it for over 2 years. It works great for me; I have had no problems and I relax AND use permanent color...

Tonya,

Did you go over the hair done with lye, with the no-lye?

I've all but made up my mind to go back to the African Pride. I do NOT want to invest lots of money and more hair into trying the Affirm if my problem is with lye relaxers in general.
Myhairsos, I have recently noticed a yucky color change as well. I bought rainbow henna in persian black and i'm hoping that solves the problem.

I use African Pride No-Lye and a love it

It makes my hair look smooth and healthy looking. I was considering switching to Lye, but like so many have said, If it aint broke, don't fix it

My hair dresser has always use Affirm Dry and sensitive scalp on me, and I beleive its no-lye. I have never had any problems with it, my hair is not dry, it doesn't break and it grows just fine. I personally dont know what the hype is over no-lye and lye. But since Ive never used Lye, I cant compare the two. If no-lye works for you, then just go back to it.

Okay, I went out and bought the Designer Touch Sensitive scalp relaxer. It stated that it is a no lye relaxer. I'm going to relax my sister's hair this weekend. I'm kinda nervous, but I have done a lot of researching on the board about how to prepare for the relaxer. I believe I am armed and ready w/ the help of you ladies. I'll post her results sometime next week.....

I'm Mizani No-Lye. I've decided to stick with what works for me. My hair is growing and it has a nice shine and looks healthy. But I have decided to add oil (eg. olive oil) to the relaxer to combat dryness, just in case.

Just as an aside - I notice a lot of people discussing "underprocessed" hair as if that simply means "not as straight as usual"....

I just wanted to add to the thread (tho I can totally respect that some folks have better luck with no lyes - if they work for you, do go with it. Absolutely do what's best for YOU) that this isn't quite so. Underprocessed hair is hair that is fuzzy, dull and weak because the relaxation process never quite completed. Just because your hair doesn't get as straight with one relaxer as another doens't mean it's underprocessed. It just isn't as straight....

Now one may not like the "not as straight" result - but that doesn't mean the hair is underprocessed. Unerprocessed hair is a serious problem that requires TLC and lots of care to correct. "Not as straight" hair may be annoying for some - but it's not really a fatal flaw in the land of haircare mishaps.

My point is just that the two are different. I only wanted to add that so that people new to the haircare thing didn't get confused.

Umsummyah,
Good morning!! I did not overlap the no lye with the lye...I believe I read on this board that it is a no no to do so. If I am not mistaken u can put a lye over no lye but not vice versa. You can do a board search to see if u can find the thread if u have a problem finding it let me know i will help u gather the info u need...
Toodles!!

Just to add my comments, I had a serious problem when I used using no lye, and yes everyone hair reacts differently, but I just know from my own experience my hair did not agree with it.

I can't wait to put a Pink Lotion no-lye perm in my hair Saturday! This is the only no-lye brand that I trust, but I am thinking about trying another one.

My mother raves about Creme of Nature. Her hair comes out really nice with this one. Is there anybody here who uses the Creme of Nature brand relaxer also?

Hey Karonica,
I used Creme Of Nature for a long time. I loved it, it kept my hair moisterized, but wanted to try something a little more modern (because you know CON has been out for decades now) i am now using Mizani (no lye Sensitive Scalp) and love it even better
