Who still uses no lye?

Hi Tonya,
I've been alternating between Pink Lotion & Optimum No Lye for 5 yrs. I've been using No Lye for 13 yrs. I don't have any problems with it...that I didn't create myself by being lazy, such as skipping out on a wash, or neglecting my ends for a wk. Even so, it still doesn't break... but it'll start to get dry, which of course would lead to breakage.

I relax anywhere between 4-6 mths without any ill effects. I know that everyone's situation is different... but I have strong, thick, yet light strands (full of volume & bounce). Don't get me wrong, I've been tempted to try "Lye" just to see if the "grass is greener on the other side" (for me anyway), however I don't want to risk the overall health that I've achieved by flip flopping back & forth between Lye & No Lye.

I really wish u success with which ever u decide to go with.

God Bless,
Peachtree

I hear ya. I think it has it advantages and disadvantages, mostly I belive that Lye thins your hair out over time. It's straight, but thin and lifeless.

I jsut switched back to no lye, I agree with you, the problems I had with it was lack of care. But NOW I know better.

I use no lye when I do my own touch ups. since i've been doing my own perms my hair has been growing so I guess no lye isnt that bad

I use no-lye and the only complaint I have is that my scalp is so dry nowadays....so I make sure I use coconut oil every other night...

Just to add my comments, I had a serious problem when I used using no lye, and yes everyone hair reacts differently, but I just know from my own experience my hair did not agree with it.

[/ QUOTE ] Hi just had to agree with Bev. I too was using no lye and my hair was so dry, frizzy and just sad looking. Until my new stylist suggested that I use a lye relaxer Designer's Touch. My hair is not as dry. But then she did something that I was not happy with: she switched up and used Motions with oil because I complained that I could not stop my hair from being dry. Well it did not straighten the way the designer's touch does it was all puffy-I will be going back to Designer's Touch lye relaxer. The no lye really left my hair super dry. But that was before me finding this board though

Well here is an update for me...I switched to no lye back in Late January late Feb and I must say I am very satisfied. I my hair is striaght and my roller sets are full and fluffy! I am getting a good amount of growth and my hair is just as thick as it used to be. I am very happy with my perm Designer Touch sensitive scalp no lye....and the information I got about moisture from this board. What I am doing differently I add Olive Oil to my conditioners and WGO with my leave in.

i never knew it was ok to go back to nolye after lye!

i think nolyes have been demonised for too long. nowadays, oils and conditioners are added to the superior brands in order to buffer the drying effects. plus the only difference between no lye and lye may be the need for intensive conditioning and moisture afterwards in order to counteract its drying effects. nobody can tell my sister's hair that no lye is damaging!

If I'm not mistaken calcium hydroxide is in no-lye relaxers, which is what supposedly dries out the hair.

Zanna--why are you considering use of a lye relaxer. You and JRW both have waist-length relaxed hair and you bith use kiddie perms....are you nervous about the possible switch?

I would also like to hear more opinions on this subject. I have been using No-Lye for about 2 years now, and I'm going to get my last one next month befoer I switch to Lye in August (Mizani). I'm wondeirng if my dry hair is a result of me not taking care of it (which I really wasn't), or if it was a result of the calcium in the lye. A stylist once told me that I had Calcium Buildup in my hair maybe that could be the problem. Whatever it is..I'm looking for something ANYTHING that will combat this dry brittle hair!

UmSumayyah, are you still using African Pride no-lye? I am planning on using this as my next relaxer and wanted to get someone else's opinion and experience with this relaxer. Does it leave your hair soft after you wash out the neutralizing shampoo or hard feeling like some relaxers do. Any and all opinions on this relaxer would be welcome. Thanks!

I just wanted to share that last night, I put a Creme of Nature herbal formula relaxer in my hair. I left it in my hair 40 minutes (oh yes I did daggonit), and the perm took great! NO MORE UNDERPROCESSED HAIR! (or at least it doesn't look like it!)

I had based my scalp with shea butter the day before and I didn't burn at all for a single second. I will not do this again though because it left a lot of build up, and I had to use a regular shampoo after neutralizing, just to get that shea butter gunk out. But my hair is straight and now I can finally see the true length!

yay, Karonica!!

It's good that you've found something that works for you. I know what you mean about underprocessed hair. That's what I had when I was trying lye relaxers. I finally gave up on lye; my hair just doesn't like it.

Update on my African Pride experience: I had my hair relaxed with the "no lye" over the weekend and I can't believe how straight and smooth my hair is again. It just goes to show that some things might work for some and not work for others. "No lye" is what I'm sticking with.

Sorry I didn't answer your question before cindy, I just now saw it.
I used African Pride and always had slightly wavy (I always asked my stylist not to get it bone straight), VERY shiny hair. Since I have been taking care of my hair, it is not dry anymore. (distilled water final rinses, hooray!

)
I have tried 2 different lye perms so far and the difference between the two is very obvious. That might be partly due to my technique, before I always had a stylist but after she burned the heck out of me last time I saw her, it has been the amateurs. I did it once myself (motions oil regular, yuck) and once with a friend (clairol textures and tones, yuck).
I have an elucence lye formula in regular and plan to relax myself on friday. I am planning to do only half my head at a time so that I can really take my time and do a good job.
If it doesn't work well I am going to conclude that lye relaxers don't work for me, and will go back to African Pride.

I currently use GENTLE TREATMENT (NO-LYE) (1 year)
I am happy with the results I've received thus far!
My scalp is sensitive. I have color-treated hair and I have a very dry scalp. When I was using LYE relaxers, I had a dandruff problem. Now that I use a NO-LYE relaxer, my scalp hasn't been irritated or dry and flaky.
The texture of my hair feels better too. My stylist told me that a NO-LYE, such as GENTLE TREATMENT is best for my hair because my hair is color treated and the LYE perm(s) were causing too many problems for my scalp. I believe I made a good decision.

Is your hair permanently dyed, may I ask? Also, I think I've read somewhere that no-lye perms are better for color-treated hair, but I'm not sure if I was seeing things or I misunderstood or what.

Hey Karonica,

My hair has highlights (light-brown/honey-blonde)
My hair/scalp has not reacted in a negative way, since I've had the highlights added.
I began using the NO-LYE relaxer (Gentle Treatment) prior to getting my highlights.

Gotcha! Thanks

I ask because my hair is permanently dyed (I think it was bleached to obtain this color). I know the box said don't use on bleached hair, but I've had no adverse affects and my hair has been underprocessed for months and I knew that going to a hairdresser for a perm would be a total waste of time, because they want to rush through it in 20 minutes, without taking the time to apply the stuff, which is how my hair became underprocessed in the beginning.

Please DON'T.
My very 1st posts regard this
NO-Lye /Lye issue and boy am
I SO sorry I decided to
cross over and go with a PCJ
Kids LYE perm!

My hair needs some serious
re-conditioning and re-working
now, it's a mess.

If it ain't broke-- don't "fix" it!

I've been perming my hair for YEARS
"off 'n on" going months and months
without retouching, and NEVER had a
problem like what I got now after
perming just ONCE with the PCJ !

Stick to what has been working for
you all along. It's not worth
it (believe me) going in another
direction just "for a change"...

Just *my* humble opinion. I've
used No-Lyes ever since they 1st
came out, and I didn't appreciate
the fact, that they have worked
for me for so long.

Please re-consinder...

I hcurrently use affirm no lye and I think my hair is changing because I am not getting the same results. My hair is dryer and needs a change. yes I condition. I use to use cream of nature and my hair was great. That was for years. I mena I can remember the perm my mom would do every year before school started. Revlon Realistic lye perm. My hair was soo full and bouncy, which leads me to believe that I should go back to that, lye that is. Cream of Nature mild was good. I know that my hair needs a change soon.

I was transitioning...

but I broke down this weekend and permed my hair.

I used Botanicals no lye and I love the results I got with it.My hair was shedding and my stylist pointed that it maybe due to the lye relaxer i was using. In the past i always used no lye and never had so much shedding that i experienced with a lye perm.

I will be on a strict moisture regime and so far its been three days after touch up and im not shedding abnormally. I will keep my fingers crossed and pray.

I use no lye and have since high school. I tried Motions Lye and Bantu and it's like i didn't even relax it. I think I'm going to stick to no-lye. Underprocessing, for me, is just frustrating...

I'm no-lye also!! I don't have a sensitive scalp and have never been tender-headed, but lye has still burned me. Perhaps since I self relax now, I'm just not quick enough. But I'm using no-lye. Now.............the one lye relaxer that I used to use and have great success with is PCJ lye (with the mother and the daughter on it) not the one with just the little girl - that one is no-lye. But that PCJ was always good for me. Now that I've gotten much better and quicker with my relaxers I think I could do it again, but for now I think I may just stick with the no-lye.
