Who Measures Their Hair with a Ribbon/ Thread?

I did a search and couldn't find much. There was someone on this board who used ribbon/thread to measure and had very specific instructions. (Not sure if the instructions were in their hair album, though.)

In case I don't find that person, do YOU measure your hair using a ribbon/thread? If so, can you provide information as to how you do it? I'm not asking about those who simply place a measuring tape at their front hairline and pull it to where their hair stops at the back. This question is primarily to aid in measuring layers.
