Okay let me confess, I have breakage no matter how hard I try to avoid it.

I condition and keep the heat off my hair. But my frail strands snap, crackle, and pop every single time I wash my hair. They have no strength. I've tried protein, which usually makes my hair brittle and breaks it anyway. Emergencee does not, but it doesn't make my frail hair any stronger.

Does anyone else have this prob. My stylist keeps telling me it's cause I don't come often enough (yeah right) and I'm not using the right products (her products-okay). I use the best stuff and I use heat maybe once a month if that. what da deal?

Could it be the chemicals (texturizer)?

I've had this problem too. My stylist said that it was b/c of wearing my hair back all the time. I don't think it is just that. I know I'm not that great w/ detangling my hair after washing. :(

Mecca, the only thing I can think of is the two times I used a no lye. It was really an accident, I didn't know it was being applied. This was a last year. I've since switched back to lye.

I too have been plagued with breakage for who knows how long. At times I stopped it briefly, but never to the extent that I woud like. I did realize that I, for one, am not able to extend my relaxers as long as I thought. This was causing a great deal of my breakage and at first I wasn't trying to hear that. So now I am going to revamp my relaxer schedule. If that doesn't help, I will think of other things to do. What, I am not sure

I had my hair on the right track until I put a so called demi-permanent color in my hair last October! Now I cant seem to get my hair back on the same track that it was. Yes, it still breaks. My hair didnt break at all before the color. The elasticity isnt the same. It is funny b/c I was about to make a similar post when I came across yours. Maybe we need porosity control? Should that help? It is like the protein isnt mending like it used to. What 's the deal?

Also, the Henna and Placenta packet by Hask seemed to have more of an effect on my hair than the aphogee for some reason. Should I try using real henna just on the color treated section of my hair? It seems like the part that has been color treated and relaxed is straighter than the part that is only relaxed.

same here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im so sorry to hear about your hair trauma:(.I started experiencing breakage whenever I tried to stretch my texturizer, or need a texturizer touch up and also when I decided to color my hair. I just texturized my hair after 2 months and the breakage has slowed down drastically. I think I was having a problem with the two textures. The Jamaican black castor oil and Eqyss megatek rebuilder are my best friends right now.

Sounds like you have a build up of products and that a clarifier and reconstructor is needed, preferably incorporating some kind of acv or baking soda rinse. Then a deep conditioner which includes essential oils and heat.

Your hair sounds as if the product buildup has caused your hair to become brittle and unresponsive to conditioners, if it's brittle you need to moisturise and nourish. The Apoghee 2 Min Reconstructor is very nourishing and a light protein treatment.

Hey Mel!
Keraphiz stopped my breakage. It could be that Emergence was too strong for your hair. What about a milder protein like Keraphiz or Motions Silk Protein?

I'm having the same problem with breakage. I've been keeping a journal of when my hair seems to break the most. I realize the breakage occurs the most when I go beyond 5 days without washing and conditioning my hair. I notice when I wash my hair every 3-4 days I don't have any breakage but if I go 7 days my hair starts to break and I lose a lot of hair during washing.

It was some professional color by clairol. One of the ladies at my salon put it in. BIG MISTAKE! My hair was in PERFECT condition. They would always say "o your hair is so beautiful!" Not anymore. I learned my lesson. Leave well enough alone.

BTW, thanks Princess Avaya for the advice. I am going to do smthg similar to this tomorrow. I am going to follow the advice on that thread about saving extremely damaged hair. (ALthough I dont think mine is really that damaged. It just isnt as beautiful as it used to be.)

My shedding and breakage is horrible, but I'm not bald so I figure that my shedding and breakage is normal. I've tried various products on this board and nothing seemed to solve the problem so I don't see it as a problem anymore. The breakage just keeps my hair from being too thick and unmaneagable. That may sound dumb, but I see it as removing bulk without having to go to the salon.

adding that: My shedding started after I had my first child over 2 years ago.

Are u relaxed and colortreated too?
Dont give up! If we stick together maybe we can figure this out.

Actually ladies... using egg yolk tends to work pretty well for me, but i wanna get back to those days when My hair was so healthy that I could just do my C/O wash w/honey and not have to worry about any hair breaking in my comb, etc. I want that perfect elasticity back! I want my hair to be PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRFECT again! LOL This is really bothering me. I should be at bra strap by now and instead I am stuck at armpit/bottom of shoulder blade.

Thanks guys. Good advice.

PrincessAvaya- that was very helpful. I'm sure many will be printing out this thread.
Aivonfay- I know how you feel. The shedding has been going on so long, I really accept it as normal (but sometimes it's worse than others- like now!!) I'm not bald either, and my stylists are always saying "you've got lots of strands, don't worry". I started after having kids, too. I'm pretty sure hormone imbalance is a prob for me, but no one will test me unless I've skipped periods. Maybe I should lie and tell them I have.

I'm just relaxed. I think its hereditary because my sisters hair is the same way it sheds like crazy yet she still has a head full of hair.

I had some major breakage a couple of times. The first time back in 95. I had armpit length hair. I was putting in my own relaxers, I used gentle treatment relaxer. My hair broke off all around my crown, I had short/medium pieces everywhere. It was too much so I cut it all off to Halle Berry. Never put in my own relaxer again or used gentle treatment..lol
The next time I had breakage was last summer. My hair was almost brastrap length. Tried a new cheaper salon and they overprocessed it. Started breaking off a lot where the new growth meets the relaxed part. I was petrified. I immdiately went and bought Aphogee.
Once I did that it stopped breaking right away. Only had to do it once. I then went and got a blunt trim of 3-4 inches. Had to baby my hair back, deep conditions and not combing and didn't put in a relaxer for 6 months. So far so good.

I always have some breakage. But I only worry if it increases. I try to do weak protein treatments on a regular basis and balance them out with moisture so hair strong but moisturized. I am trying to limit strong proteins to every 8-10 weeks.

I think I finally figured it out. The hair color killed all of the protein im my hair. After doing a series of protein treatments back to back (meaning washes in a row), my hair seems like it is getting back on track.

Maybe ur problem is that u are not giving ur hair enough protein? Which treatments have u tried and how do u use them?

I have the same problem. No matter what I do I cant seem to stop the breakage unless I absolutely do not touch my hair. It always looks like its much more than normal breakage. I cant figure out if its lack of protein or moisture becasue I moisturize more than once a day and use protein as often as the product will allow.

Our sink was recently blocked and guess what was causing the blockage?? My hair:perplexed .
Funny thing is its still getting longer and still thick as ever.

Snapping when wet, sounds like you need to lay off the protein!! Protein is good when used in moderation, if you use it too much it makes your hair just snap off! Webby had a thread about this

I've been having that breakage problem for a while also and sometimes changing u'r products can be a big help, also giving u'r self a good clarifying shampoo before applying the protein reconstructer's help also. You don't actually have to buy u'r stylist products but maybe something of u'r choice. The Hask Placenta is really really good when I use this I see instant results meaning no breakage at all. They have the conditioning treatment and also as a leave in spray, try it out on a regular basis and get u'r self a good routine u can keep up with maybe that will strengthen u'r hair. Hope this helps. By the way what products are u using anyway, I hope not Moitions, b'cause they are know for damaging the hair slowly but surely leaving u dry, brittle, thinning hair and half bald.
