Because I am truly thinking about setting up shop in my own place! Well, except for when I need my hair dyed, but you know what I mean. My own perms and everything! No offense, but there are too many stupoid hairdressers out here. And when you think you've found the right one, they do something to piss you off and make you wanna leave them! I can't take all this stress anymore! /images/graemlins/mad.gif

I only go to the hair dresser for touch ups and hair color jobs. I prefer doing my own hair instead of sitting in a hair salon all day. I feel your pain. It is hard finding quality hair care.

I hate getting my hair done. I am never happy when I leave the salon they always make me look like James Brown and I am tired of wasting my money. I do a great job with my hair at home I wash and condition it and do my own trims!

I can relate to the James Brown thingy. "POOF" all over my head, and then they expect a tip. The tip I would like to give is you messed me up you SOB now I have to go home fix your mess....by the way have a nice day.

I don't. My time is valuable and I refuse to sit for hours to get my hair done. I've done my own hair - relaxer, trim, cut, highlights - whatever - myself since 1984. In the three hours I would sit in a chair at a shop, I could have my retouch and condition complete and be on my way.

OMG! I would just cry if I left out of there with the JB hair.

Karonica I don't /images/graemlins/nono.gif I'm a perfectionist and even if I told them to do everything the way it's supposed to be done, they just wouldn't get it right in my eyes. They'd jack up my hair on purpose because I'd be giving them too many instructions /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The hair horror stories scare me for a start.

The fact that my sister who has always had longer hair than me now has shorter hair and it hasn't gained any length in 5 years since she's been getting it "professionally" relaxed.

I cannot comprehend parting with £40 for a relaxer when I can buy a 5lb tub for less than half of that and the whole tub will last me just over a year. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

I can do it myself, so am not going to pay for a service that I can jack up for free. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

They don't care about my hair as much as I do, no matter how passionate these people are about hair. If they jack it up they are the ones sleeping easy after you leave their chair, and you are nursing a sore scalp, broken ends and a 5 inch cut when you said a TRIM.

I used to be a dedicated salon person until

1. Why didn't my hair seem to grow?

2. Why did they put all the products in white bottles and not tell me what they were?

3. Why is it that I never got tips to take care of my hair but kept being told to rebook an appointment in two weeks

Please come to NY and do my hair...or show my sister to do my hair...or show me to do my own hair.... /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

You make excellent points.....

In all my 29 years I have gone 4X(1x when I was 7 or 8, 1x when I was 10, 1x when in 95 and 1x in 99). I like knowing how to do things myself..ya know. And I figure if they can do it why can't I learn and do it as well. Plus why spend money if you really can do something yourself. And who loves your hair more than you. And if anything goes wrong you just blame yourself (instead of maybe going back to the salon wielding a weapon.... /images/graemlins/spank.gif

Daviine I won't be reaching your shores till Dec 15th of this year. Maybe sooner depending on how things go with the business. But I've got NYC withdrawl. /images/graemlins/smile.gif When I get there I'll be more than happy to show you, if you can wait till then. In the meantime girly I'm sure you're doing just fine with all the advice on this board it's like and internet encyclopedia for women of colour.

I'll be waiting.........

Maybe if I sleep long enough..... /images/graemlins/sleeping.gif

When I was little and I couldn't wait for the first day of school or Christmas, I would try to sleep the days away...Think I can sleep til December?

I also try to sleep away my problems..that never works though. They're always still there when I wake up!!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Oh and good luck with the business!!!!

oh my god, my twin! (Faith)

hehe...that's my motto! Why Pay??!! If you know how to get the job done, why pay someone to do it? My family calls me cheap but I call it Thrifty /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do my own braids, relaxers, pedicures, sometimes manicures, sometimes eye brows...and you know what? It usually comes out better than when the professionals do it. for instance. My braids that I have in now. took a long time but hey, I'd rather save $180 -$200 and do them myself. Same thing for the relaxers. The crappy stylists that I've come across in Connecticut reak more havoc on my hair than what my future dog would probably do.

I don't! Why bother? I actually stopped since Jan 03 when I strayed into this board and the results are enough to deter me from going elsewhere.
LONG LIVE L.H.C.F
Peace /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Daviine /images/graemlins/smile.gif

LOL you make me sound like I'm santa claus and in the sack I'm carrying a 5lb tub of Affirm regular lye relaxer and some vaseling to base your scalp with /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am licensed and I did it for the purpose of having the certification to do the research or to operate a natural hair care salon. I could not work within that crazy system of horrors that some have experienced. Besides, I am an educated professional in other areas. When I talk hair though, people who are quick to say..."Ya, but are you a professional hairdresser..? (as if you are not licensed you are totally ignorant about hair)...then that cannot be used against me. I have never relaxed anyone's hair, as I am a naturalist and am strictly dedicated to natural hair care and repair and growth of hair. My point is, people should not put their hair and head in the hands of anyone else that you do not really know and trust beyond the shadow of a doubt. If they look trifling...talk jealous...are disrespectful in any way (you know what I mean...) and act as if they are doing you a favor...and they are only interested in your money... /images/graemlins/wink.gifforget them! Bonjour.

I don't think I could ever relax or dye my own hair. I think I have too much, and when it's time for a relaxer it's too thick for me to handle. Do any of you have past shoulder length hair that grows in really thick and you still manage to relax it yourself?

Ya know, Karonica, it's ironic that you chose to create this thread. I just got off the phone w/ my dada, telling him I can't do the salon thing anymore (excepting Relaxers). Perhaps its the 14 pills I take daily, how I never wear my hair down to avoid friction, how I have avoided direct heat for the past 6 months... What I am saying, LD said best, nobody cares for your hair like YOU do. And I think all of my pet peeves plus my hair fascination (okay obsession!) equals a bad combination for 99% of stylists.

I don't go to the hairdresser at all. Can you see me sitting up here in a Korean hair shop, talking about "Nooooooo cut" and making the "scissors" motion with my fingers?? Nooo way man. I'm doing fine on my own.

The only time I go is for a cut or trim...and if they mess that up I don't go back. Everytime I find a good one they decide they aren't doing hair anymore...and I gotta look for another one. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

/images/graemlins/smile.gif MissJ My hair comes in thick and is past shoulder length and it's a chore but it makes it so much easier when I seperate the hair into 4 sections and comb it thru gently to make the application a lot easier.

I'm going to add MSM to my regimen to make the new growth a lot softer.

Leshia you are too funny! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I don't go to the salon either. I probably visit a salon once a year.

I can not stand /images/graemlins/mad.gif going to the shop ON TIME and waiting for an hour or more for my so-called appointment.

Plus, I pay to get my hair done, and the style is "falling" by the time I get to the car. No thanks!

I do not go the hairdresser.......anymore. I use to faithfully get my hair done every week, and all I was getting was a simple wash, deep condition and set. Then I finally I came to my senses and realized that I can do it myself and save money
$40- $45.00 (thats how much the cost is to get my hair done, well maybe its just here in Maryland). And now I love doing my hair myself. But I only go the hairdresser about every 3- 4 months to get a relaxer. That I will definately not do myself.

Hi Karonica,

I have just learned there are some good hairdressers and bad ones. Not all hairdressers should hold a license./images/graemlins/nono.gif I haven't been to a hairdresser in almost 7 years. I just do not have the time to wait hours in a shop. Even if I did have the time, I wouldn't. I really enjoy the personal attention and pampering that I give to my hair own my own.

Everything you've mentioned plus some, have made me more determined than ever to do my own "do". And I'm lovin' it /images/graemlins/grin.gif

i wish i could do my hair properly enough not to get it done at a hair stylists. i still have problems with roller sets so i can just imagine me trying to do anything else. i would love to learn. braids and everything. i see so many hear that braid their own hair cornrows, box, twists, etc. i would love to do all of that on my own. i honestly would buy a tape or take a seminar to learn because it is so much better to empower yourself. i hate being so dependent on a stylist for even a roller set. when i master the roller set look out! /images/graemlins/wink.gif God bless you all.

I am capable of doing my own hair,, but i can't beat $17 for a wash set and deep conditioner... as far as the whitentubes, I know what you mean, you never know what's in there, which is why I bring my own products,,, sometimes though, I use there moisterizing conditoner

Thanks LondonDiva. Is that how you manage to comb it or relax it? I even have a hard time combing at about the 4 week mark. So, MSM makes the hair easier to manage? I never take anything for my hair. I just thought the pills were used to make the hair grow, but I have no problem with that. You relax your own hair? How long does it take? On the relaxer box it says that you shouldn't go more than 15-20 minutes while relaxing. When I get my hair relaxed, I estimate that it takes about 30 minutes. If I tried to do it myself I'm concerned that it would take up to an hour, I would be bald.

I haven't been to a hairdresser since the mid 80's. I can do a better job myself. I have very thick hair and it was past my bra strap at one time. I am now growing back my hair after going natural, then texturizing (relaxer). My goal is to grow it to where it used to be, and then some.
