Hello everyone. I am relatively new to this forum and have learned a whole lot here. I never knew how to care for my hair properly until coming here. I want to thank everyone for their tips. I have been wearing a wig since March. I initially did it because I have yet to find a beautician I like or can trust. Now I am doing it because it is a great protective style. I can put all kinds of stuff in my hair and not worry about it weighing my hair down. My hair has grown a couple of inches! I want my hair to at least get to my shoulders all the way around before I consider wearing my hair out. I probably have about a year to go. Any one else use wigs for protective styles?

I'm considering it

You're right, too. It's a great protective style! Especially in extreme weather. Do you ever feel insecure about it coming off?

When I first started wearing them...I was insecure. Now, not at all! They fit very well. And I get lots of compliments.

You are not being a pest...I am just glad that I am getting a response...lol. I just plait my hair...I would braid it if I knew how to. The wigs come with straps that you can tighten it to fit your head. Since I have a big head (lol) it stays on my head real good. If you go to a shop that sells wigs and try on a few you will see what I mean.

I'm going to have to go before winter gets here. I'm wig queen in the harsh cold weather this year! The icy wind turned my hair into ice cicles last winter

I'm going to get one with curly weave that's relatively short/medium length.

I wear wigs all the time I have about 15 different ones all colors and styles.
I usally braid my hair and wear a wig cap with the holds in it and I make sure my hairline stays moisturized.

Wow....you have a lot to choose from. I currently have 4. I have noticed that my edges might be getting a little thin so I am going to have to be more careful. I also wear a wig cap. I have been using Surge so hopefully that will help also.

I am a proud member of the wig wearers club.

I think this is a fabulous protective style, especially for those of us with shorter hair. I keep my real hair braided up nice and secure underneath, and it gets lots of attention, i.e, surge, cw's, the works. I will continue to wear them until I achieve my desired length.

Hey, I wanna wear one! I wandered into a BSS two wks ago and totally fell in love w/this one wig I saw. I was kinda scared b/c I had never bought one, but I still can't stop thinking about it. It was sooooo cute; it was cut in a short hairstyle and had bangs. It was about 27 dollars, but was synthetic hair.

Is it better to buy real haired wigs? If so, why? How do you take care of them, both real and synthetic i.e. do you brush them, spray oil sheen on them, etc.? I really want to buy one.

I have 2 synthetic hair wigs Dolce, they look really great. No one can believe it when I tell them that it is a full wig. I get compliments all the time. I paid about $25 for a bob wig, and $30 for a longer wig (just below shoulders). The longer one is all the rave

. I comb and brush my synthetic wigs. I also apply sheen if necessary. I haven't tried a real one yet b/c I haven't found one in the bss that I absolutely love.

I'm with you LuvLiLocks....I plan to wear my wig until I get to my desired length also. I am always taking care of my hair also. Not a day goes by without me doing something to it like CW, surge, or applying Dudley's PCA. I take care of my wigs by spraying conditioner on it. I have only bought the synthetic wigs...the others cost too much.

I am wig queen right now. This is a great protective style because I am not messing in my hair all the time and all I do is spray surge and keep it washed/clean and just braid it up. I am wearing them so I can let my hair grow out longer. I love wigs because it is something that is not permanent. If I get tired of it, I can pull it off at anytime. I plan to continue wearing them until I reach brastrap. (Even then I just may braid my hair back up and put the wig back on.)

Me personally, I've had bad experiences with synthetic hair. After RE applying hair products for shine it began to smell funny. Then, when I washed it, it got matted and tangly. This wasn't a wig but weave. 100% human hair worked better FOR ME. Just a suggestion

I have both synthetic and human hair wigs I spray them with wigs spray and brush with a wig brush.
I use Beverly Johnson wig conditioner to bring my wig back to life after washing them.

Since cutting all of my relaxed hair off on Saturday, I'm married to my wig. I plan to get some more and I'm using the human hair (it cost $61 but it is well worth it because I can part it anywhere I choose and it gives the illusion that it is mine, lol)

LABETT...do you buy your human hair wigs from the BSS or do you order them? The BSS that I go to charges $90 for human hair and around $60 for synthetic. I know that I can buy synthetic cheaper, but I really liked the styles and quality that that store carries.

I wear wigs too. I finally got an instant weave and only paid 19.99 for it. I love it and people refuse to believe that it's a wig

I also have human hair wigs which I paid no more than $30. for.

I treat mine like I would treat my hair if I had a perm. I wrap, dye and hot curl them.

Chajen, what sort of wig do you have????? Its that Cloud 9 wig???? I know its adjustable...I got a big head and I can't have nothing squeezing my head, since I am prone to headaches/migraines

You dye and hot curl your wigs?

You must mean the real haired ones. Still, I didn't know you could do all that to them. And the prices you pay are GREAT! I would get a real haired one, but the one I fell in love w/is synthetic. I really don't know where to shop for one either.

How long are your wigs, Madison? How many styles do you have?

I can't wait until it gets cold enough to wear my wigs again. In the past, I would wear wigs all year round, and people would always ask me how long my real hair was. I'd say: "The same length as this wig." Anyway, I'm looking forward to cornrowing my hair down & being done with it until spring.

The type of wig that I have is made by Fifth Avenue, and the style name is Vanessa. I love it! I am on my second one. It is great for us big-headed folks!...lol. I really need to learn how to better care for my wigs though. I have been scared that I will mess it up by washing them even though I know I need to.

Maybe you guys can help me out?
I need to give my hair and scalp a break so I'm really considering buying a wig over the weekend. Do any of you know some sites (besides the wigoutlet and especiallyyours) that offer some good wigs? The style I'm looking for is the curly. This is what I'm looking for in detail:

Color: Dark Brown
Texture: Naturally Curly look
Length: Medium-Short (not so short that it spikes up, but something with a little 'fall' in it)
Hair Type: 100% Human

Oh, and this is a good page about caring for wigs and hair extensions

I have been wearing wigs since I took my braids out and will do so when I go to France to study abraod as well. I only have two synthetic wigs, so I get tired of them really quickly! one is straight with a kind of layered look, while the other is curly...I alternate so I dont get sick of them, but today I decided to just where my real hair to work...tomorrow too...at least til I am ready to wig it up again.
