Is it possible for hair to be too long and thick for a wig? I want to start wearing a wig. I want to try different styles and colors without having to damage and use heat and chemicals on my hair, so I went o a hair store today. The lady who owns the shop told me my hair was too long and thick for a wig...that didn't make sense to me. I've heard of celebrities wearing wigs with long thick hair. I asked her if I had it tightly cornrowed would it work and she still said no. Then she suggested I get my hair trimmed and styled by the stores beautician, I told her I don't like using heat on my hair especially since I sweat so much its a waste of time. So is this true, or is there a way for me to make my jair flat enough to wear a wig? I would like to start wearing protective stlyes other than a plain ponytail.

I, for one, think it is possible to have hair too thick and long for a wig... the celebs who wear wigs may well be wearing customized pieces that were made just for them, made to accomodate massive thick and long hair. But the wigs at the BSS are made for women who have very thin, short hair. They aren't made to accomodate someone with your length.

If you wanted to shell out the amount needed for a custom made wig, you could probably get one that would look great on you.

BTW: your hair  :lick:!!!! OMG!

I had a friend who had long and very thick hair but had her hair cornrowed really flat just so she could wear a short wig to see how she would look in it....and I gatta tell ya, she looked awesome so you could find someone who can cornrow it for you nice and flat against your scalp, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to pull this off. Good luck with it.

Edited to add: My friend's hair was relaxed so I don't know if that makes a difference for you.

Not if you braid it or wrap it. The woman in the store probably said that because she was shocked to see a woman with a head full of hair coming into the store to purchase a wig. It's a rare occurrence.

I disagree. Anyone can wear a wig. My great grandmother has waist length hair and wears a short wig when she leaves the house. She plaits it and then pins the ends of the braids flat to her head before putting it on. A lot of the other women in my mother's family wear wigs from time to time and they have long thick hair. If you catch them at home or on a dress down day they won't have it on. But if they're going to church or are dressed up they'll have it on.

Also, I was watching Living Single the other day and Regine managed to put a wig on top of a head full of two strand twist extensions in more than one episode. If all that can fit under a wig someone's natural hair can. They'd just have to get it to lay flat. And she wore synthetic wigs for the most part. Nothing spectacular. I doubt they were custom wigs. I also remember Maury Morrow (sp?) donning a short pixie wig in a movie with her head full of natural hair and wondering how the heck she got it all under there. Trust, it can be done.

If you want to try one on there, your gonna probably have to go with your hair prepped already to fit them tho or they are gonna keep sending u away

ITA. As long as you can make it flat with a wrap or if you want braids and just put a wig cap over it, you should be fine.

I hadn't considered the possibility of wearing your hair wrapped under the wig, since I wear mine cornrowed underneath wigs. But then I have to fold up the excess length. With as much hair as OP has, she may have to wrap the cornrows around and around to fit under there. Perhaps a nice tight wrap would work better.

If you get any lip from the women at that BSS, OP, just go to another one. Eventually you'll find someone who can help you without a nasty attitude.

I'll try the flat wrap and if that doesn't work , I'm going to ask my mother to cornrow my hair flat and try to pin the remainder down between the rows. Now that I think about maybe she needs clients for the salon part of the store and wanted to make me a regular customer. IDK but neaxt time I go I'll be prepared and insist on trying some on. Thanks everyone, I hope this works I really don't have the time to do too much to my hair daily these days and a wig would be a life saver.

Sounds like a plan! If your cornrowed or wraped hair is still too bulky, there may be some wig styles that won't work, but there will be plenty that will work too (curly styles especially).

Good luck to you and please post the pics!

I am positive that you could wear a wig with long and thick hair. You could get cornrows...maybe even going in a circular pattern like when getting a wig. Or if your hair is straightened, maybe you could try wrapping it very well and tying it down with a du-rag or wig cap.
