I was in bed thinking about this lastnight. I was seriously thinking about going down to Baltimore one day in the future just to let the do my doobie/wrap whatever they call it out there. I love the results(light not weighed down, bouncy, volume etc). I am from NJ but I went to college in Baltimore (MSU alumn) so I am not being bias and I dont want anyone else to be bias. In your opinion which area does the best hair whether relaxed or natural and why?

I live in MD but I would never get my hair done in Baltimore, no offense to anyone so please don't rip me a new one if you love Bmore styles or are a stylist. But if you want to know why, take a trip to the Baltimore Harbor on a nice spring day and just sit outside and watch...your jaw will hit the floor when you see all the bee hives, FINGER WAVES, pin curls and "hair sprayed to death that if you touch her hair you'll cut your finger" curls. Oh gosh, your gonna make me go back into my box of pictures me and my friends used to sit and take of these women back in my college days just for laughs and PROOF...boy, those were the days:lol: But I digress....

I get my hair done in DC and I love it. Never had a problem with style. I frequent NY and NJ alot and I've always been in awe at how long many of the chicks hair were. I remember walking around a mall in Queens and was like "damn, every black girl in here has long healthy looking hair..wtf:confused::confused:" Same thing with NJ.

Deontaer, who in the world did you see with finger waves? Now that is a crime! J/k:D

Well, I live in Baltimore, and I must respectfully disagree. I think we do the best hair. (Ok, Im a lil biased, but whatever). I also think we are very creative when it comes to hair styles. And a lot of ppl I kno think DC people have wack styles and look like bama's. (but that aint coming from me, just ppl I know, so dont stone me)

I spent a long summer in Queens, and I've got to say I was impressed with the hair on women I saw in the malls and out and about. Weaves, naturals, presses, wraps - they all looked very well done, with a few H.A.Mey exceptions. New York's hair game is tight from what I've seen!

BINGO! NYC is where to get the 'do done. :D We are always pioneers in the latest hair care ....including...wraps, pin curls, etc.

It's not THAT far from MD ;)

I have to go with my hometown NYC.
Where I see most of the women with longest hair. Healthy etc..forget them styles..haha

Yes, that's the word I'm looking for...CREATIVE. That it certainly is. But shame on me for making it seem like it's everyone...it's not. It's so funny how DC and Bmore are only 30 minutes from each other but our styles are COMPLETELY different. Baltimore folks say we're are bammas, we (and a couple of other cities) say Baltimore folks are bammas...I'll chalk it up to we're just...different:grin:

In NJ doobies and wraps just dont have body maybe its just some dominican shops but I hate that bent angular curl they put in customers hair the curl looks  but in Bmore it just looks feather like i like it and I know what you taking about with the fishtail braids and geled updo's but as far as wraps go it looks nice. As for weaves I have to give it to Philly all day and natural too goes to Philly. I seen healthy hair in ATL too.

I kno, Bmore and DC are very close, but people I know talk about people from there like they live light yrs away or something (Personally, I dont get it either :perplexed )

I say NYC for healthy hair because we are Doobie Capital up here. Hell, Washington Heights has the largest percentage of Dominicans in the entire US and that's why we have all the Dominican products for cheap. Now, for the funkdafied geled updoos I'd say Baltimore and I think DC rocks the best haircuts but it looks like I'm biased towards the East Coast. To answer the question, I'd have to say the "LHCF metropolitan area" because stylists from coast to coast pretty much have the same damaging practices and that's why I try to stay away from them.

Girl only the ghetto people hear still wear that mess in their heads. That was the 90's. Nobody respectable wears that mess anymore. However, I work downtown and I saw a lady in the subway station yesterday with platinum blonde fingerwaves (she was my complexion mind you) and an auburn pineapple looking phony pony. Only in the hood... :ohwell: She's the only one I've seen in quite a while. Most of the girls I know here wear braids, and wraps/featherwraps. Or the short spikey hair cuts. The mohawks (flat twists or cornrows with curls in the middle), fishtails and the puff in the front with a long pony (think Gwen Stefani) were in for a minute but they went out too...

Another Baltimore area chica checking in--I've frequented both DC and B-more salons and haven't had a finger wave or french roll/beehive since the early 90's. I think maybe it's a ghetto salon vs. upscale salon debate. The Doms do the same style in B-more ans DC. The AA solons are pretty much the same. I stick to the more modern salons and make sure my stylists know I don't want a cut. When there's no real cutting involved, they can't get too creative.

Exactly. I can get a doobie here over East Baltimore, or go to Luisa's in DC and they look the same. I've done both. I used to get my hair done in DC/PG when I was living on campus at College Park. Oh yeah, soft waves were back here. But a soft wave on short hair (think Billie Holiday) is different than hard crunchy fingerwaves. The last time I had fingerwaves I was in 6th grade. :perplexed

I can only compare MD (live) and DC (work) because these are the places I spend most of my time.

Hands down - Baltimore!

DC is more conservative, and the salons are classier and expensive but I see more tear up hair on the streets and Metro (I work near GWU/Georgtown, so I'm no talking about in the HOOD) on the average DC woman.

In Maryland, esp in Baltimore (suspect like New York) - most women have a style/look (it may not be something that I would personally wear or do) - they are rocking some kind of STYLE mojo - be it relaxed, braids or a weave!

Maybe it was MTV or BET inspired it, but...

I love watching the so-called ghetto fab girls - because their LOOK esp. hair is always DONE!

ITA! I'm a Jersey girl but hands down NYC has the BEST to offer when it comes to STYLE, LENGTH and HEALTH. Plus there are a plethora of stores to feed one's PJ addiction!

Ladies,

I'm new to the MD/DC metro area and I am in desperate need of a stylist. But I live in the Hood (off Georgia) and I'm at a lost for a classic stylist. Please PM me with any suggestions. Thank you...

Where all the ladies from GA at????

Baltimore and DC should be separate because the hairstyles are alot different. When I lived in Bmore there was a lot of french twisty roll thingies, up do's, fish tail, braids...some complicated hairstyles. D.C. ladies(yeah I'm biased) on the other hand wear more wrap or roller wrap type of styles. I haven't seen a lot of "hairstyles" per se lately, maybe like rods or straw curls. In the hair mags I can spot a D.C. style a mile away, but the everyday person doen't really get their hair done like that. I think ladies down here are into low maintenance, silkiness, shine, and SWANG. However, cut and color? Yeah, I think D.C. wins in that category, Philly is a runner up. and D.C. is ABSOLUTELY the best place to come if you want braids. They do everything up here, styles that other places don't even know about yet.

GO TEAM D.C.!!!

ETA: I give the natural hair thing to NYC and Philly. It's hard to find a "outside the box" natural hair stylist in D.C.

I will agree with another poster. Bmore ladies do keep their hair done. No matter what it looks like.
Atlanta? I feel like they just copy off of everyone else...(don't hit me! I'm originally form there.)

I've lived in several cities and by far NY has some of the best hairdressers. I haven't lived everywhere but I am sure that if you do a little research, you can find a gret hairdresser in any metro area. I am sure you can also mess around easily end up at a bad spopt. I spent 4 years in DC for college and came up on some great hairdressers there also! They definitely got next. Although in DC they have hard ass water and it seems that the people from there can tolerate a bit more oil/grease than the avearge because I used to have to scream at them to put that "naturall oasis" down or I'd be sweatin' grease until my next wash.

I've lived in Atlanta, Houston and Boston. Houston was by FAR the worst. I think Atlanta is the short hair cut capital.

Hands down my vote goes to queens, NY, I lived out there for a while, what i noticed is that in harlem around 125th street, they do hair good but kinda rushed because the lines are so long. What I noticed is that Queens dominican salons, treat hair well, they support good hair care, healthy hair and you get the best doobies ever. I live i NJ now, I found 2 salons that are ok, spa tricology in bloomfield, and perfect cut in bloomfield.

What are "bammas"?

I am a Travel Nurse so I am speaking from experience. NYC is top of the line.
Baltimore- the black hair stylists think they know too much when they don't and can't take care of longer hair on a black person if it killed them. The Dominicans are so-so and few and far in between and rush a tad bit too much for me.
DC - probably can cut well but I do not cut my hair so I wouldn't know.

I am in VA now and it is pathetic here. I am still searching for someone with healthy hair that is their own to ask them where do they get their hair done. 98% of the females here are in some jacked up wig or weave, or something.

No offense to anybody but I am just speaking from what I have seen. Please don't eat me up and chew me out ladies:look:
