So I think I finally have a basic working knowledge of permanent color (Thanks Tracy!

but this is what I was wondering...for those who have been using the same color to touch up (as opposed to switching colors) when you do your roots, do you leave it on them and then for like the last 2-5 minutes, run it through the rest of your hair to "refresh" your color. I read that that was the general way to do it, but that seems like it could get really drying over time. So does anyone just do their roots and rely on colourshines, for example to keep their color looking fresh and shiny?

Re: Permanent color...

I used "refresh" for 2 or 3 minutes when I colored my hair. I did it once with T&T Bronze (even though I had used a different color the time before).

You don't have to do it every single time if it makes you nervous. It just contributes to the evenness of the overall result.

You should REALLY as a relaxed head only be coloring your hair (yes - including root touch ups) two times a year. Three tops. Yes you CAN do it more - but I never did when I was using color intellegently - which was when my hair was looking it's best.

Colorshines wouldn't be the same deal though. It's not a permanent color and you should (or at the very least CAN) apply it to the hair all over, every time. It's a rinse. No ammonia or peroxide or "lifting" or "lightening" agents (read: peroxide, ammonia) at all. I've never done a "root touch up" with Colorshines. I apply to all of my hair, each time, usually once a month. It's not the same a permanent color.

Sorry - I jsut re-read your last question (you DO have your color info under the belt!

) and the answer is yes, you could just refresh your color with a complimentary Colorshines shade once a month, or once with each relaxer, if you preferred.

I always get the ends of my hair refreshed, but the problem is, each time I get my hair dyed, my hair gets lighter a notch. In a few years, I'll be walking around with platinum hair.

Thanks guys!
As always, you're a big help Tracy. I agree about only touching up 3 times a year as a relaxed head. I don't think I plan to color until I'm a NAPPTURAL though

Still though, I doubt that I'd be retouching any more than once every 3 months. Thanks again!

I don't doubt it for a minute Karonica...

Fabulous and platinum if anyone can pull it off our Karonica can....

SSC - no problem. Sounds like a good plan you have there.

I do retouch my color about every 12-14 weeks.

I used to only put it on my roots and wash it out w/o running it through to the ends at all, but for the last 2 times, I ran it through and left it for just 5 minutes. I'm not sure though, if it's even worth doing that, cuz you can still see that "line" where the color is a bit darker at the roots than the rest of the hair. And like Karonica said, it does make your hair lighter each time, which can be not so good after awhile!!
