question about color

HI,
I would really like to dye my hair black. I currently have brown hair and I am wondering what the best approach is, What is the safest way to do this so that I don't incure any damage. I am considering just getting a rinse because I am concerned that a semi permanent or permenant color will be drying. Is this also the case with a rinse. Is a rinse drying as well? If not what type of rinse would you recommend.

Don't use the Jazzing Rinse. It caused major breakage for me.
