I didn't vote on the poll because i don't like the way choices are phrased.

But I am going to say that this is something I need to stop doing. I recently was at the salon and a natural 3c MBL came to get a sew-in like Rihanna's jagged bob. Just because someone has a weave in does not mean they don't have healthy nice hair, for her it was a styling option to get the cut she wanted without actually cutting. And thats beautiful!

 So they sewed up all of her hair? How did this work? Why not just buy a wig? It's cheaper and reusable.

 I don't like weaves that cover up ALL of ur real hair. It looks more like a sewn-on wig to me. :( No offense to anyone, just being honest...

I'll be real honest here.

Only if I know them personally and know the condition of their hair before hand. I know some women who have healthy hair but just wanted length or have naturally fine hair and just wanted thickness. I also knew someone who's hair was long & I always admired, show up one day with a Halle Berry wig with highlights just b/c she wanted to switch it up. It was beautiful!

But otherwise, b/c I am always constantly thinking about the vast lack of hair education in the black community, I may assume that something may not be right under there.

But forreal tho, the hairline tells me allll I need to know. If the hairline is to' up (I mean traction alopecia bald), then I assume the rest of your hair is not that healthy either. If it looks okay - good, then I tend to think you are a hair forum junkie and/or giving your hair a break, or just wanting a change for a while.

Hmmm, I actually see a lot of women down here, on a daily basis, with long and thick hair (full APL or longer). More than NY. My hair is pretty short compared to some of the women I see on the regular down here. I'm not sure the kind of women you run into, so I can't make a educated opinion, but I've never met someone who thinks hair has "healing properties", not just in Florida, but anywhere :lachen:

I agree that a lot of stylists down here don't know what they're doing, but that's the same anywhere.

As far as making an assumption on the health on someone's hair just because they're wearing weave...I don't really think about that. But things I would look at to make that assumption are their edges and the condition of the weave. If they don't even know how to properly take care of weave and look like thy been rollin around in dirt all day, then chances are, they don't know how to take care of their own hair either :look::lachen:

Yea, but most of the women I know who wear weaves genuinely believe that weaves have "healing" properties. They will not let that head rest for a week... i mean trip to high heavens if they don't have a weave on their head.:lachen: I've only know one black woman down here with long hair. In JAX, totally another story. But, alot of the stylists down in Sofla, IMO, don't know much about hair. Just, the things they do to mine and the way their clients look... uh uh. But, I know that in ATL, healthy long hair is the NORM. It's just not that much of a priority of Fort Lauderdale.

It depend on how the weave looks! :yep:

It the fake hair looks tore up (mismatched, uncombed, old and just hanging:nono:) then I assume they don't have a clue, but if the weave is styled and looks well cared for then I assume they are just gettin their "that girl" on!
:yep: Ditto. It's pretty clear when a girl has a tight weave game versus when she's faking the funk with 8lbs of yaki hanging onto three broke strands and a jacked up scalp.

I voted "I don't care." I really don't think about it that much. It's a "whatever" thing for me. Heck, people probably think I'm bald because I wear quick weaves to work. I just don't have time, energy, patience, nor desire to style my hair everyday. A half-wig saves my morning routine...and keeps my hair healthy and protected. I save my pampering for evenings to moisturize and wash days. ;)

If her hair can barely cover the tracks and the inch of real hair is a totally different colour and/or texture from the weave then it's obvious she can't grow it! Sadly I see this too often :nono:

Wow some interesting perspectives in here. I recently went for a trim and the ahir stylist BUTCHERED me. I was blunt APL and now i have all these stupid layers. It looks good straight, but natural 4a! When it shrinks:rolleyes: its looks soooooo stupid curly. I been braidin my hair lately to not think about how annoying and stupid my hair looks.:look:

Nope, I don't assume that. I just view weaves, wigs and braids as another hair style. I love that we have so much variety in the styles we can have without doing crazy and damaging things to our hair.

No the first thing that comes to my mind is wondering how long their real hair must be. I have a girlfriend who wears weaves/braids all the time and her hair is at least MBL... So when I see others with them I know it's just a styling option...

I voted "don't care" for lack of a better answer.
I don't investigate a persons hair. If it looks nice...it looks nice. However if it stand out now matter if they have a weave or not, I will notice....especially because I used to wear them.
Years ago I wore weaves which did not work for me...my hair would grow and break off over and over again. Not to mention salon damage with abuse of heat.
Over 6 years ago now I've been wearing an instant weave aka quick weave for those who don't know what it is while my hair grows underneath.
It took me "years" to understand my hair and love my hair because I did not know how to take care of my hair. My mother did not know how to take care of my texture as there weren't as many support systems as there are today on "how to's". So I've never had a bald head..but felt bald because my hair was not the same. It was in perms for years because it was the only way I knew how to manage it.
The discovery of LHCF and the support of some awesome people here, I've learned...and am still learning how to care better for my hair. I've been natural now since 2003 and I think I'm finally getting used to my own naturalness and enjoying it. :yep:
I know this is a long message, but I hope it helps.

Not all the time but sometimes yes. I Saw this girl today at wal-mart. She had a semi weave extension/pony thing going on. He hair was sleeked back. But her edges all the way to where the center where the pony/weave began. Was see thru.. meaning I could see her scalp thru her hairllike she has sleeked back 12 strands of hair.. I had to fight the urge to approach her and tell her about BT or MN or LHCF. She needed help. But one could tell she was one of the young fresh arse chick who though. rocking see thru tight ponies/weaves was the stuff.

That's why I'm braiding my hair up now. It doesn't look right curly anymore because of all the lengths. I'm just gonna have to wait for it to grow out. :ohwell:

I put that I don't care. But if I know right away that it is a weave (not braids and I do not know the woman) I might that...mmmmm that's a bad weave. A stranger shouldn't be able to recognize that a weave is in fact a weave...

I always used weaves and braids as a styling option. People that would put weaves in my hair though I was crazy bacause my hair was just as long and pretty as the weave I was getting.

I used weaves and braids because I get tired (laxy) dealing with my hair.

Plus when I was in the military I didn't want to cut my hair above collar length (mandatory length of a females hair if worn down in uniform) so I would get my hair weaved up and cut the weave into a collar length short style. Loved it!

Celebrities do it and I love to do them too......

Plus I get bored looking the same all the time and want short then long, straight then curly, braided looks.

Now that I wear kinky twists for ease of stretching my relaxers out as well as protective styling and such.. I am not too quick to judge when I see braids on other ladies hair out in public.

I also like to wear them so that I don't have to keep doing as much work or manipulation to my own hair. Though I still have to keep my scalp and hair healthy while in twists.

and sometimes.. I just get tired of looking at my hair (especially if its been damaged):look:.. so I like to wear twists for a change up.

I do automatically think that their hair isn't very long or healthy which is why they have to wear a weave in the first place.

It depends on how the weave looks. Usually you can tell how well a person takes care of their hair even if they're wearing a weave. If it looks neat and kempt, I assume it's just a styling option. If it looks unkempt and you can clearly tell it's a weave, I assume they're probably wearing a weave because they can't take care of their own hair well (which usually means their hair probably doesn't look very healthy).

No. I personally know a few in my circle of friends who have weaves, but they are FABULOUS weaves. They look great, and I only assume it to be a styling option. In fact 2 of these ladies have hair as long or longer than my own.

I don't really think about it. Like alot of you have said I only wonder if its obvious that their real hair looks bad. I'm transitioning so I wear my wigs, braids, and sew ins so I'm not so quick to judge.

I actually never thought about it, I dont assume they dont have any hair,
But i do sometimes think that they might not know how to take care of their hair, or that their hair may be unhealthy.

People of all different hairlengths wear weaves, but i always wonder if they are wearing it to give their hair a break, to let it grow, for a style, or because they dont know what else to do with it/its breaking.
