I airdry in four separate sections to help smooth down my new growth. I also use a flatiron on my new growth one week and caruso rollers the alternate week. Also flexi sets look great when you have new growth. I use the same products that I use normally.

Guuuuuurl.

A major detangling poo and conditioner.

And EXTRA EVERYTHING. Ie: conditioner, moisturizer, everything.

Havent tried it ...

Im going into my 8th week and usually Id relax now, my NG is kinda chillin, but looks like it could zap any minute

8 weeks in good gurl. How long you think you wanna stretch?

8 weeks is really good. I went 9 weeks last time and someone on here told me that wasn't a stretch. lol Heck, it was for me. Let me know how you do. I used nothing special. I just worked with my new growth.

What I've Been Using For Stretching Is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Line. It's Awesome:)  The Poo Doesn't Plump Up The Hair And Allows The Conditioner To Penetrate And Detangle.HTH:)

All these are good suggestions. Honestly, I use the same products throughout too but just like someone said, more of everything. I haven't relaxed my hair since April 1 and not going to til Aug 1. I've been relaxing less often since last year, Jan.

My tips to help:

Wash your hair in PARTS (mine is just down the middle)
Since it's summer I co wash often (every other day) and let my hair air dry under my scarf.
I use Domican conditioners.. my FAV is Silicon mix. as far as I'm concerened I'm using it all summer.
Most importantly:
you need to moisturize and not try to comb/ manipulate the dry hair. Working with the two textures might actually cause more harm than good.

If you have any more q's feel free to ask.

o yea: my products:
Co wash w/ Silicon mix every other day
While hair is wet, add:
NTM Sil Touch/Salerm 21, John Frieda Frizz ease, Rusk Smoother and Redken Extreme Leave-in. usually in that order.

See I see that you are a silent pj, so no recs for you lol:lol:

But seriously, I am sure you got mass products. Just use them up. add oil for slip and do whatever you need to do.

I find myself having to use two conditioners. One for detangling and the other for softening/conditioning.

Like I will wash with Keracare (KC) detangling poo, deep condish with KC humecto for 20 minutes under the dryer, take off my cap, then detangle, then add Aveda DR condish or treatment, DC for ANOTHER 20 minutes, detangle under shower water, then do a cold water rinse. Now I am not suggesting those particular products, I'm just saying. The more newgrowth I have the harder the challenge is. But I don't fight it, I give it extra love and care (ie extra conditioning and no combing)

Also, deep conditioning with heat is my best friend!

Condition Condition Conditon and Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize!!!! I'm stretching for 3 months, and if I don't use the right products, my new growth will be a mess, that's why I had to let go of that Keracare Humecto. I'm back on Paul Mitchell's Instant Moisture Shampoo & Conditoner, and that is helping A LOT. I've fallen in love with the Rusk Smoother Leave-in, which helps with moisture also. For moisturizing my hair (and especially newgrowth), I'm currently using Shealoe, which is Shea Butter + Aloe Vera. HTH

Biolage detangling solution and wild growth oil and also a flat iron like the maxiguide are essentail to stretching relaxers for me.
1. Detangle in sections with biolage
2. Apply wild growth oil on the new growth,
3 Air dry/Rollerset and flat iron new growth.

HTH

since you are doing no heat, skip the flat iron and use slyver2's scarf method with plenty wild growth oil on the ng only.

I guess this would be the time I should use some kind of sleeking poo & cond huh??

I might try that sunsilk :D

I am also a beginner in this stretching thing. I normally get a touch-up every six weeks. There have been a couple of times that I've "stretched." But not because I was trying to. I couldn't afford to dish out $65 at the time.

During those times, I don't remember my new growth being unmanagable. I think it was pretty soft. My problem was my hair being so thick. I have really thick hair with a relaxer. So, I can't even imagine how thick my natural hair will be. That is what I couldn't deal with, the thickness, and poofyness (is that a word). That was also because I wore my hair down all the time. So, when new growth started growing in and it wasn't quite time for a touch-up, I pulled out the handy dandy Hai flat irons. Even with the flat irons, there was still a big difference in how flat my fresh touch-ups would be. Someone always said, "somebody got a fresh perm."

The thickness won't be much of a problem with braidout/twistout styles, but I think it will be a problem with doing buns. Even when I did those, my hair was thick. So do you ladys basically us the ponytail method to get your hair to lay down with a bun???

Also, while my new growth is not that bad, my edges are OFF THE HOOK when I need a touch-up. And being that I will be wearing my hair up more often, and my "kitchen" will be visible, I really want to know what I can do about my edges. Any advice??

ITA. This helps alot. I am currently 10 wks and trying to stretch for four more months. Low manipulation and moisture, moisture, moisture, is the key to stretching IMO especially when you get further along in your stretch

Deep conditioning with AO conditioners has helped me the most through stretching...

Also staying away from combing my hair when dry (finger comb only) and doing braidouts has helped as well.

Glaze by Elasta QP works well for my edges.

Thanks for replying Alliyasmom. I just filled out a form for a sample on their website.

Do anyone else have any advice for me???

I'm a little over 6 months into my transition to natural hair. This is what's working great for me.

  • Moisturizing Shampoo (Breakthru, etc...)
  • CO Wash (various conditioners)
  • S-Curl Spray
  • Jilbere Shower Comb (wet and dry hair)
  • Washing hair, frequently

BTW, I airdry, only.
