When does hair color turn ghetto?

I agree that people tend to throw the word "ghetto" around too much, but when it comes to crazy color hairstyles there's a thin line between tackiness and edginess. When it comes to punk/alternative blacks they have a whole different swagger and confidence that makes it work. You can tell they didn't just walk around the corner to the closest Korean BSS and picked up the cheapest most plastic-looking weave they could fine. It's kind of like high brow and low brow art.

I really believe that we as a people have a very interesting history with hair. Hair played a major part in our upbringing. The time and care we were taught to put into it and the way our hair was described if left looking a certain way. When we see hair that does not conform to the styles of what everybody else is rocking (including those from other races) we call it ghetto. We call it ghetto because it does not conform to our standard of the perfect coif. It's how we were bought up.

I must state that to call these people ghetto is not necessarily a proper adjective. I don't remember seeing people in the hood looking like that anywhere that I have lived. I have seen people bored in the burbs look like that. Hood people in these parts rock wigs, lacefronts, and see through relaxed hair. lol. You know stuff you see across the economic spectrum.

It's how you wear it. I dyed my hair purple and I wore it as an accent.

Now if my hair matched my eye make-up, shirt, and shoes. Then it would've been ghetto. it's how the person carries themselves, and the style of the hair.

So cool purple is my favourite colour when ever I am drawing myself as anime or something I always give myself purple hair and eyes

It's really simple. I call the hair styles ghetto because when I see them the folks wearing them are from where? You guessed it...the ghetto. Let's be real. When I lived in the Dallas area we called those styles "South Dallas hair". Because you could almost guarantee that the woman or her stylist was from South Dallas. People from certain areas have a look that reflects what is acceptable in their environment. Same thing goes for other races.


It's rare to see a college educated, middle class, professional of any race displaying styles worn by the lower classes. Even when the lower class originates a style the middle, then upper classes tweak it to fit into their "world".

Hair wasn't a major part of my upbringing, it just was. My mom took care of it, there were natural and relaxed women around me and I never really felt anything about my hair till high school (and that was just that it looked good).

Now while both textures of hair freely floated around my life I didn't have ANYONE personally around me with unusual hair. In spite of that I have liked every style Rihanna has done with her hair in the past 3 years, punk styles, and recently put hints of blue in my hair. I STILL think those women looked ghetto.

I think your point is relevant and probably reflects a lot of people but it doesn't reflect all of us. Taste and style are very individual. Another woman may think those styles look hot on the original women but she likely has a very different style and background. To me however the style, color, and hair on those women are mishandled. It's ghetto precisely because there's a lack of education and pride even IN the style.

3/4different textures, curlyand straight right on top of eachother, hair glued on awkwardly tilting. What I actually find kind of interesting is the way these women are being defended. It being about race, inability to accept differences from others, every unorthodox style/color having to be equally good or bad ( we wouldn't even say that about NORMAL hair on this board).

I think it might be a combo of the style and color. I have never been a fan of some styles but adding the color makes it more unflattering. I wouldn't say ghetto as much as I would say unflattering.

Msmchy I love your purple hair and was in awe when I first saw it in your Fotki. I love color and styles when they are done in a tasteful, dare I say edgy way.

I do believe that there is a time a place for it for example I couldn't show up at my job (a business run by lawyers) with a bright color but if I worked in fashion, entertainment or other industries where self expression is the norm it would be perfectly fine.

I love your purple hair. I even went to Sallys and held a jar of manicpanic but I put it back. I knew I wouldn't be able to maintain the color. One day when my life is less busy I will dye mine purple just in the front too. You wear it well. You look adorable with that color.
