When Do You Say "Enough is Enough!"

When it comes to haircare...

Just wondering. What's your limits?

I used to think baggyiing and taking vitamins was excessive but here I am sipping on MSM water as we speak, with a baggy in my head. It def. was one of those things back when I first got into the hair game where I said "that's too far" but now I am a faithful baggier. I think my limits changed once I realize how deep this hair thing is for me.

Then I see people, who suffer adversions from a product that they love and they still keep truckin.' For me that is my limit (if something effects my health and physical being) but no judgement here because I can see why people feel so eager for growth and to obtain something they never had before.

So PLEASE no judgement calls or anything like that, but what is your limit when it comes to the haircare journey?

Well, I have always been a vitamin junkie so I will always be a pill popper but I don't think there are any limits for me until I reach my goal. I want bra-strap length hair and I am willing to do just about anything until I get there.

I won't comprise my health at all and I cant take 50-11 pills a day. And I wasn't about to go around smelling like smoked bacon with the MTG. I gave that up quick.:)

I used to be a vitamin junky too.

Then I noticed I wasn't losing weight at all, and I think the amount of vitamins I was taking had something to do with that. Gaining weight is one of my limits. :nono: It's so not worth it to me.

I think my limit is with the vitamins. I take a multi and a b complex (for energy) and I'm thinking about buying some protein powder and that's it. I see some people take about 7-10 supplements and i couldnt do it.

with a good diet, exercise, and a good regimen (moisturize daily, DC weekly, less combing, stretching, no heat) I don't think you need much else. I feel that should be sufficient enough to get to my goal length.

I take all kinds of stuff. When I was in high school, I would spend my allowance money on vitamins. Grapeseed extract, coq10, multi's, minerals, msm, glucosamine, lysine, cystiene, vitamin c, essential fatty acids, alpha lipoic acid, 5htp, you name it , I have tried it.

Ooh girl this is what happened to me. I was taking all types of ish, Biotin, horsetail, flaxseed, and some other bandwagon I was on. I didn't gain any hair length but I gained a bunch of weight. It took me a hot minute to realize it was the vits. I sold them things so darn fast. I'm not about to get huge for hurrrr. NO MAM

Okay so I am NOT alone. This is reason #1 why I won't take amino acids. Oh nooooo :nono: .

this sums up my limits.

I have to say anything that might or messes with my health, and even my physical appearance. I had to toss horsetail for making my heart skip, biotin for breaking me out, evening primrose for making me feel bloated and protein shakes for putting some pounds on me. I can't deal with all that:nono: I even have to toss my stylist for trying to relax my hair too straight:look:

Wait... Certain vitamins make you gain weight? Which ones? Aw hell naw! I've been popping all sorts of vitamins recently and wondered why I look so bloated lately. I just figured that I was pms'ing. Say it ain't so. Please clarify?

Many hair vitamins contain amino acids that can cause weight gain. Some also contain phytoestrogens that can make our hormones become unbalanced and that then can cause weight gain and other symptoms. I have been worried about MSM because of how it changes people periods. Something has to be hormonal there and I can figure it our from my research.

And also, the Evening Primerose oil always makes me feel bloated. It doesn't happen like that for everyone, but it does it to me. I felt a lot better when I stopped taking it.

Protein vitamins can make you gain weight. Your body has a very limited storage for protein and anything over that storage will and can be stored as FAT. The problem is, people don't know exactly how much protein they need.

Essential oils can have the same effect. Especially since some of them have a high saturated fat content.

Oh she's gone. I told the heifer to wash the relaxer out, and she have the nerve to spray me with oil sheen to help the relaxer stay longer. She said she wanted to make sure it's really straight:mad: I'm back to self relaxing. I will be relaxing in two days, so wish me luck ladies:)

Really. Wow I had no idea. Thanks for the info. I've been taking Biotin 5mcg, B-complex, Vitamin E, EPO, Flaxseed oil and Silica. Now I must re-evaluate my vitamin regimine. :perplexed

I'am trying to find ut where my limit is right know,I think I will go as far as baggying
I'am pondering getting extensions(braids, wigs) but I vowed myself not to wear extensions again just because I love handling my hair and playing with it.
So that might be my limit.
I also take a variety of vitamins but mostly because I'am iron deficient and don't eat as much veggies as I should:look:

My healthy hair habits were mostly already in place before I found the hairboards. So I wasn't coming that far out of my comfort zone by giving up flatironing and blowdrying. I already only relxed 3-4 times a year, already washed my own hair, and conditioned, and used scarfs and oils (Asante).

That being said, I have gotten pretty good results without having to resort to anything more drastic. And I don't think I will ever incorporate things like baggying into my regimen, or Henna. Thought about it, but I just don't see the need for it.

I won't ever be able to stick to a vitamin regimen just for hair either. But I will start supplementing for other issues, that will probably effect hair and skin and nails as well. I bought HF37 and those bottles are STILL sitting in mama's cupboard 5 years after the fact. And the thing is, they WORKED!!

But this is because my hair hasn't been a huge challenge to grow out. If it were, I really don't know where the "enough" point would be. I think I would weave up for a long time and let it grow out that way.

I think all the ladies have already said it but the list of concerns for me are

1.Health
2.Hair

Everything else is tertiary.....

Anything with drastic side effects like messing up my menstrual cycle, extreme fatigue, etc. And anything not marketed towards humans.

That is exactly why I won't mess with MSM. Too many potential side effects and the potential to mess with my cycle. :nono:

To address the thread, my limits are when my physical health becomes compromised ex. negative side effects. Luckily, the vitamins/supplements have been really helpful and beneficial to my health. Vitamins/supplements are great for overall health and that's why I take them. Hair growth is just an added benefit for some of them. I have so much more energy and my skin looks great. However, I'm not gonna take substantially large doses in order to acquire accelerated hair growth because I'm afraid of potential side effects. Too much of anything is never good so I try to montior my intake.

I have a lot of limits...anything that has to be done every day, any vits other than what I'm already taking for general health, anything that costs enough to buy gas for a week...

My hair has always been between APL and BSL...I don't ever remember having hair shorter than 2" past shoulder length so growing long(er) hair has never been an issue for me. I originally came to LHCF and hair boards in order to restore my hair's health once I moved and no longer had access to a fabulous stylist.

So, I guess my hair laziness comes from always having had a certain length and just not being dedicated enough to do a whole lot to get it. ::shrug:: From what I've observed, maintaining healthy insides, taking care of what grows, and not chopping off every inch that grows makes for a great regimen. :look:

i don't do topical growth aids, i have sensitive skin, i don't want any adverse reactions, i focus more on practices that help me retain length, growing 2 inches in one month is really pointless if you are losing 1.5 inches a month due to breakage

i don't take an excess of vitamins nor to i drink/eat anything for the sole purpose of growing hair

i refuse to 'make' something work for me or continue to use a product or practice a technique that seems to do more harm than good just because it worked for another member, everything is not for everyone, not everyone will get the same results
