When do you decide to trim, when do you decide to wait

Some of my hair sins have finally caught up to me just as I am working on this shoulder length hump. My ends are starting to tangle and I notice more and more splits(I was also cutting them with some dull shears and I think that made it worse). I was thinking that maybe I should just ride it until the end of the year and cut then. When do you decide to go ahead and snip it or when to wait it out?

I feel your pain here :ohwell:. I haven't had a trim since January of this year, and hadn't planned on another one until January 08. But the last month my ends have been a tangled mess. They were also feeling rough and dry...I knew I had to do it. I was getting tired of S&D because I kept finding splits galore.

I got a 1.5" trim yesterday, and I'm pretty happy I did. The ends feel great now.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am hestiating because I was just making progress with this shoulder length hump:ohwell: It is my fault though so I can't be mad at anyone but myself. I was going to go buy some sharp scissors at sallys this week and get my mom to help me but maybe I will just go get it done instead.

I was making some progress---but I knew my ends were in poor condition. I figured what's the use of holding on to the ends? I went and had them trimmed today. They look so much better--Yes, hair is shorter, but healthier. My stylist was a bit conservative. --I still need just a little bit more trimmed. I 'll wait until the end of the year.

Gym- I'm in your exact position now... I haven't trimmed since maybe Feb or March of this year and although my ends don't look dreadful, they just don't feel or 'swang' right to me :nono: I will wait until the end of the year (when I should be full APL) and trim an inch or so to even things up. Honestly, I think taking the plunge and getting as much trimmed as you really need to make your ends healthy is smarter than quick fix trims here and there... because as you said, it really does catch back up to you :ohwell:

You ain't neva lied!!

A couple of things caught up with me.

I under estimated just how much damage relaxer run off can do...I have learned my lesson now
I stopped doing protein treatments followed with moisture treatments (the whole shebang) I used to do that every other week but I started using light protein here and there instead. My hair feels fine but I guess my ends were not having this.
I also stopped rollersetting for a couple of weeks and flat wrapped instead. I didn't really dry my hair all of the way and I would just flat iron it instead. :nono:

Hi Gym, I seem to always cut, and now I have to because hair was falling out so it was looking ultra thinner. I would just do a good trim, and harcore protien and conditioning.

retiring my flatiron was the best thing I ever did for my ends... I always used to have to trim my hair because my ends would be so fried and uneven from all that ungodly heat :wallbash:

Now, I will trim because I want to... my ends are healthy but my hair grows unevenly so it looks thinner in some sections :ohwell:

Thanks Bmack, I need to dust off that stinky aphogee pack I have sitting in my product bucket.

OT: I love your siggy pic. You look beautiful and at peace.

I hate that. It also makes it harder for people no to hack your hair off because most assume that the uneveness is from breakage. My left side grows nearly 1/2 inch faster than my right.

I feel you girlie. I've been so tempted to trim, but I'm trying to sit tight. I had like 4 trims last year, all more than 1 inch each. So now I'm trying to make up for what I lost. I've only had one trim this year in February and got about 1.5 inches cut. It probably won't be 'til the end of the year before I trim again. The only thing that's keeping me from trimming right now is the fact that I'm not planning on wearing my hair out until next year. So if I trim now, the ends will look crazy again by the time I get ready to wear my hair, which will cost me yet another trim. So I'm trying to be patient. In the meantime I'm going to get braided up.:ohwell:

This summer I hacked off 1.5 inches MYSELF. IT was the best thing I ever did. Now my ends are healthy and thick without a split insight. I'm able to maintain all my growth.

Now that I'm babying my ends I don't plan to trim again until 2009! I believe my hair will make it because the most severe damage is gone and I'm weekly deep conditioning, oiling my ends with avocado and castor, and covering my ends at night.

this is what I am facing now :wallbash::perplexed. I am getting my hair pressed and ends trimmed this Thursday at 10a.m. b/c of it.

I just had a my hair washed and re-braided but found that my hair needed to be trimmed. After washing my hair was so tangled and it hurt so bad that I thought I couldnt be bothered and said I would do it next time. So now I am looking at my braids thinking that I just want to yank them all out and chop of 1-2'' off:nono:....I think its because I had kept the braids in too long but I will only keep these in for 4 weeks, take them out and chop chop.

Does anyone know if split ends can be repaired? Although I will still do the chop/trim I plan on doing lots of deep conditioning and protein treatments to minimize the damage. Will this help repair them (even a little??)

There is no repairing best to go ahead due dusting call it a day. I have been having a problem with "L" splits in my hair just keep searching and destroying. I tried sisterslick ACV remedy not sure how long it takes to see results.

Hair experts come on in tired of the split ends.

I haven't trimmed in about a year. Sometimes I think I need to especially right before I retouch when my hair starts to look thin with all the NG. I usually stretch 3-4 months. After my retouch, I always leave the salon, go home, take some progress pics and assess my ends. Usually they look fine. The day they look like they need to be trimmed after my retouch, I'll make another appointment for the trim. I'm thinking that I'll do a light trim when I reach my goal length (MBL) if I don't need to before.

Right now, I'm at full BSL, but I really don't like my ends. :nono: They are not damaged or split (thanks to no heat), just uneven...I want to trim about 1-1/2" sooo bad! But, I've decided to wait and wear updos and curly styles until my first touchup for 2008 (in February), when I should be at MBL. Then I will trim 1/2" after each touchup (9-10 weeks) until my ends are thick and blunt.

ETA: for clarity

Thanks, I guess I will be going for a trim at the end of the month. But as my hair is usually in braids I will try not to keep them in more than four weeks so that I can closely monitor my hair to ensure healthy hair rather than get long hair that is stringy...

Sometimes I get tempted to trim when it is time for me to get a touchup. I have more frizziness and tangles and mistake them for splits and unevens hairs. After my touchup I regret the trim eveytime.

So now, I WILL NOT trim when I have lot of NG and it is time for a touchup. I trim after the 1st shampoo following my relaxer, if needed.

By the way GF, I got that package :)
