what\'s wrong??

k, so i finally took down my braids of two months and i was so happy that i basically had NO knots /images/graemlins/trampoline.gif and since i'm goin natural and i've heard so many good things i decided to try the no-poo method and as reported by pple, my hair was SOFT especially my growth, but then after a while wen my hair was dryin it got so dry and quite hard even tho the conditioner i used has no protein and has glycerin (+ the fact that its a moisturisin condioner)!! /images/graemlins/frown.gif /images/graemlins/frown.gif what did i do wrong?? what shud i have used to make my hair soft and moisturised?? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: what\'s wrong??

I get that all the time!!! My hair (I am also natural) is soft and silky out of the braids, but after I wash it, it becomes coarse. I think the solution is ORS hair mayo. I found that it keeps my hair soft after washing (This is still a theory because I am still in braids). It is a protein conditioner but I like it.

After washing, I would use some curl activator and jojoba/coconut oil to keep the hair soft.

Re: what\'s wrong??

Sounds like residue from the conditioner. Residue usually makes the hair really hard to manage after a while. Although this is totally defeating the purpose of the no-poo method, you might want to get a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the build up. Or you could try mixing in lemon juice or baking soda in with your conditioner. What are the ingredients in your conditioner? Maybe I could pinpoint the exact ingredients that are giving you trouble.

Re: what\'s wrong??

Hey alexa, I'm not too sure if that was for me or for ngaa but because we both have the same problem, here are my conditioner ingredients

Coconut oil intensive conditioner
aqua, stearyl alchohol, paraffinum liquidum, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, panthenol, dimethicone copolyol, cocos nucifera (coconut oil), polyquaternium 7, phytantriol, ceteareth 20, propylene glycol, cetyl alchohol, citric acid, parfum, cetrimonium chloride, methyl paraben, imidazolidinyl urea.

ORS Hair mayo
purified water, glycerine, polyquatermium 32, vitamin E behentrimonium methosulfate, cetearyl alchohol, cetyl alcohol, hydrolyzed collagen, dicetyldimonium chloride, olive oil, phenyl trimethicone, cholesterol, vitamin b5, rosemary essence lanoline oil, egg oil, dimethicone, copolyol isostearate, hydrolyzed keratin, nettle, capsicum annum, SLS, DMDM dydantoin.

I know they both have silicones and one has mineral oil which are both supposed to cause build up. I use neutrogena healthy scalp shampoo once in a while whenever I feel my hair needs it but I generally stick to condition washes.

I really don't think it is build up because why is the hair so soft out of the braids? Shouldn't the hair be hard all throughout if it was build up?

Re: what\'s wrong??

Yes, paraffinum liquidum is mineral oil. This, along with the -cone ingredients, the cholesterol and the alcohols (vegetable oils) all together will cause build up over time and will reduce the conditioner's ability to rinse from the hair. The coarseness after drying may very well be build up. I sometimes get this. You may want to try clarifying once a month (you don't have to use shampoo perse, lemon juice or baking soda is good for this--I had a few recipies, but can't get my hands on them right now). Also, try rinsing your hair through with warm water a little longer than usual. This usually helped me. I also use a natural oil straight after towel drying. Works like a charm.

Yeah, what did you use? And are you currently using Scurl activator? That is my all-time must have now when air drying...NEVER hard hair--ever.
