What's the skinny on Kemi Oyl??

I remember back in the early 90's this stuff was the bomb. I thought it was a good oil then and i have some now. Since joining the board and doing a search there is little to no feedback on it:perplexed. Is it becasue its bad for your hair?? Or maybe no one is using it because there is no ingredient list. *I emailed Kemi by the way and did not get a response on ingredients* It says essential oils *shruggs*. What do you ladies think, is it a keeper or throw out?

I like it. I just don't have a lot of it because I already have a whole bunch of castor oil. I feel like Kemi relieve my hair from dryness without weighting it down or wetting my curls. I'm not sure if it actually sit on my hair or if it is penetrate it but I love it during the dry summer month.

I get my roommate to do a hot oil treatment with it or just to add it to her conditioner. She says that her hair feels moisturize for days.

I liked Kemi Oyl, but now being more ingredient conscience it's one of those things that I stay away from because I don't know what's in it :nono:

LOL! I was just thinking about this the other day. Yes, Kemi Oyl was huge back in the 90s among us hood chicks. LAst year I saw it in the BSS, but I couldn't bring myself to purchase it, I can't really explain why, I guess the smell would remind me too much of being a 15 year old and I am now 32, so I would rather use an oil that would remind me of this stage of my life...I know that doesn't make any sense. LOL!

I think more people stop talking about it when the company refuse to list the ingredients on their product or tell anyone that ask them what the ingredients are.

I use it and like it. I would like to know the ingrediant list, but something tell me it is a conditioning oil, because my hair absorbs it ans its not heavy......... maybe jojoba? Iunno. I dont think it contains mineral oil at all, it doesnt feel like it.

I am an ingredient junkie.
I think that I probably have many of the oils at home - so no need to buy a product that I am unsure about.

:look:

I love it, my aunt who is a hairdresser suggested it when I was in High School and I started using it last year again and got great moisture from it.

I kinda like kemi Oyl and it smells great.
Although I don't use alot because I think castor oil holds moisture better and Kemi Oyl is kinda expensive ( I got a whole rum bottle of Jamaican Black Castor Oil for free!)

Kemi Oyl is a classic for me. All natural, no bad ingredients. It seems you can find the oil only in certain places nowadays. I used to see other Kemi products too. Off to google.

ETA here is the site

http://www.kemilabs.com/home.html

That's the site I went to and emailed/called *got voicemail* to get ingredient information on Kemi Oyl. I like it also. I just wanted to get the opinion of the board on what it was about and why it doesn't seem like many people here use it.

Hurmph~ Gotta get them dang blasted ingredients :perplexed

Several people already tried. They don't give it out. I remember this being discussed a while back.

It will be interesting to see if they will give them out. I don't believe they are too willing to divulge proprietary information, especially smaller /Black companies like Natural Oasis, Sunrise, etc. Kemi used to be really big in the DC area in the 90s . I think its just one of those little known gems about now with all of the oils that are available.

I love the smell!! I add it to my Boundless Tresses not only for the smell but also becuz I feel as though it really penetrates my scalp more than other oils.....IDK if thats actually true but it is how I feel :look:

Agreed. I like the smell and performance of Kemi Oyl, but not knowing what was in it was a concern for me as I progressed on my hair journey...plus, the bottle is SO tiny, and I was easily able to find other oils that worked just as well or better for less $.

i was just thinking about that. i remember this was s taple of mine in the late 90's and i retained moisture really well...allowed me to retain enormous lenght. since i joined this board, with all of teh other products, kemi oyl just fell to teh wayside. but today i bought some more because i am trying to grown out my hair. iw ent to teh salon on friday, and my sylist cut off 2 inches, so now i am on a journey to get those 2 inches back....fast! KEMI WILL DO IT FOR ME..THAT, AND MY MN

Girl you are making perfect sense!

I remember kemi oyl being big in the 90s too - i'm from va. My old hair dresser would used it on me after I got from under the dryer and before she would press my hair. My hair would shine for days. But she would keep it a secret about where to get it from so I always figured it just a salon product. So I never used it when I stopped going to her. About a few years ago when I was living in NYC - and after I went natural - I saw it in a local bss in downtown Brooklyn and bought it. But it was different using it w/my natural hair. For some reason I needed to wash more often and my hair had a weird smell after a few days. I stopped using it b/c the smell gets to me after a while - it's kind of strong on me - I would get whiffs of it for days until I washed my hair again. And also the price - $8 for 2 oz of product. :nono: I think it works best for heat styling. But other than that - there's other stuff I could use or make for myself that do the job well.

I used to love my Kemi Oyl. LOL.
IDK what I did with it.
It's probably in my PJ bin in my room.
I think I stopped using it because I discovered serums.
But I think I may revisit it.

Yall are saying it smells good...:look:

The bottle I bought smelled like grape cool-aid. Was it tainted or do yall like grape coolaid?:lachen:

I still have almost a whole bottle. I need to use it up, so I put some on my hair after I flat ironed it.

Geezus~ Your hair is beautiful :yep:. I love Kemi also. What do you use with the Kemi *moisturizer or just by itself*

I have yet to mustar up enough courage to use MN.

I saw some in the BSS this weekend and I was going to pick some up just b/c I used to be in love:love: with this stuff when I was in middle school I think. But after I saw it didn't list the ingredients I figured I would just stick with the normal oils that I use, that way I know what it is that I am putting on my hair.

Someone bought this for me, but I'm hesitant to use it, because the ingredients aren't listed. Love the sweet smell. I may give it a try just to see what happens. I wonder if it works for natural hair.

Jane Carter's Hair Serum is pretty good and I love the citrus scent.
