What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I was just thinking that my hair routine would probably be alot different had I not implemented all the tips and techniques learnt here.

If I'd not found this board, my routine would probably still be what I did before finding it which is:

1, No pre oil treatments since I didn't know about them.
2. Wash my hair (would use Lanza since I heard about it before this board).
3. Deep condition always with heat and I'd be using something still like Nexxus Hummectress since I hear its supposedly so good. Also, I'd probably use Le Kair (a girlfriend told me about it), Mizani Moisurefuse. Also, I'd still be washing my hair upside down with me bent over the bath tub

4. I wouldn't be using a very wide tooth comb. I'd be combing out wet hair with a regular spaced tooth comb
blush.gif

5. Leave ins? hmmm. I never knew what to use and would probably still be working my ways slooowly across Rays Beauty supply shelf searching.
6. I'd take out the blow dryer with comb attachment and blowdry the hair dry, then take out the curling iron and run it through all my hair, section by section. I'd use some experimental leave in and hope it was protecting my hair ends while using the iron, hoping that this new found leave in would stop the never-ending frizzing ends.

7. I would wrap the hair and tie it with a satin scarf I knew about those.

8. I'd use a protein conditioner once in a while and hate that day because even when followed by a moisture conditioner, my hair would still come out dry
frown.gif

9. I wouldn't be taking hair vitamins.

10. After exercising, I wouldn't religiously wash the hair after and would dread seeing all the shedding and hairline breakage in the plughole.

11. My hair would be getting thinner and thinner because of the nightly wrapping but wouldn't know how else to keep it straight over night and so would continue doing it. No matter how much deep conditioning I'd do, the thinning would continue.

When I look at this I see what a difference this board has made to my routine and my hair.

What was your routine before the board?

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

wrapping make your hair thinner?!!!! Please explain and give alternatives.

Before this board

1) Conditioner?- whats that, would never have event thought to use it(sad I know)
2) Blowdry on high heat with no heat protectant
3) pink oil would still be my holy grail product
4) I would get relaxers every four weeks
5) I wouldn't even think to take vitamins

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Good question ----

I've been on hairboards for a while so it;s hard to remember what I used to do.

I think this is what I used to do.

1. Perm my hair at home with NO concern for overlapping. I didn't even know what overlapping was! I ddin't even use a mirror to see the back!!
2. Uncondtionally trust stlyists doing my touchup wehn I went to get it done.
3. Wash my hair every week or every two weeks but don't know what shampoo I used.
4. Condition my hair with the reconstructor from Dark & Lovely perm kit or Dark and Lovely Cholesterol.
5. Blow dry my hair at the highest setting with Frizz-ease Extra Strength Serum every single wash.
6. Curl my hair with a curling iron almost daily.
Cover my hair with a cotton scarf or pantyhose top.
Sleep in sponge rollers form time to time--those were my fave!!!!
7. Load my hair up with grease or Pink Lotion!!!

I think that's about it. That's all I remember anyway.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

BRH!

Have you figured a way to keep your hair at night without wrapping it?? I am experiencing thinning with my hair and I think it because of wrapping. If you are coming to BBQ's I will gladly bring hair pins and stuff so you could show me

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s inf

If not for the hair boards, I would do the following:

-use mineral oil and petroleum based hair grease like Optimum whenever I get around to it because they're cheap.
-wash my hair once every week or two with any old shampoo.
-use a curling iron evey day on high heat.
-pay no attention to my ends.
-use conditioners with no regard for whether they were protein or moisturizing because I didn't know the difference.
-use Pink Oil like there's no tomorrow (actually, I stopped using it because the more I used the dryer my hair got).
-use no lye relaxers faithfully.
-what's a hair vitamin?

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Good question BRH
smile.gif

1. I would be using the wrong products for my hair.

2. I would be taking the wrong vitamins for growth

3. I would still be using combs that tear out my hair.

4. I never would have considered rinsing in the shower everyday so my hair wouldn't be getting the moisture it deserves

5. I would be unappreciative my curls.

6. And...I definately wouldn't have been encouraged or even believed that African American hair could grow to great lengths had it not been for my search for better hair; therefore I would have still been in a "NO HOPE" situation.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

My hair egime would be without this board:
-I wouldn't know what it a hot oil treatment.
-I would still use the drying pink oil moisturizing, thinking that it was one of the best product.
-I would wash my hair once a week.
-I would not take vitamin suplements except for the multi-vitamins that I have always taken for my overall health.
-I would have split ends, and thinner hair(not as thik as it is now).

And I almost forgot(how can I

) I wouldn't know about the HENNALUCENT

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Well I did nothing before this board which was the problem. I am still fine tuning my exact regime but anything more than nothing is something.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

hmmmmm, well without this board i KNOW i probably wouldn't sleep on my satin pillow case, although my german hair dresser mentioned it to me a long time ago too.

other than that i think i did everything before reading the hairboards.

since my dad is from morocco (arabic country) i got the oil treatments with olive oil from him. not that he do it but he told me to do it since i was younger. and they do all the henna stuff too, but i don't really like henna.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Nay ...what about the coloring? Didn't you use to love to color your hair?

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I would still be relaxing my hair without a doubt every 6-12 weeks had it not been for this board and others like it. Oh, my relaxers were always no lye, they made my hair silky smooth. When I found hair boards and was told that no lye was bad and that I should use lye that's when I stopped. I'm not going to put lye on my hair and relaxing just got too confusing, I didn't have that kind of time. I consider lye dangerous and I couldn't understand so I said the heck with it. It wasn't that important to me. Dark &amp; Lovely no lye was good stuff at the time or so I thought. I did take the advice and stop using no lye though but the lye option IMO, was not a good one.

I used to only wash once a week. I’ve upped it to every 3 days, sometimes more often.

I would never deep condition with heat and I mean never had it not been for this board. I did always use a good regular conditioner though. I now deep condition at least twice a month.

Color my hair maybe 3 times per year, I sometimes like lighter hair for summer. I’ve cut that completely, haven’t used color in close to a year.

I never did hot oil treatments, never.

I never used oils such as olive oil, jojoba oil and such. I was more of a cream user.

Before this board I didn’t always cover my hair at night, now I do without fail.

I used my blow dryer without fail after every wash and I used it on a high setting. Haven’t used a blow dryer for almost 7 months.

I used my curling Iron weekly sometimes daily for my spiral curls in the front (I loved those curls). Haven’t used it in 7 months.

I would surely be using Petrolatum and Mineral Oil had it not been for hair boards. I didn’t know that these products or relaxers were bad for the hair until I found hair boards.

This is the biggie, I never ever took vitamins because I can’t stand pills but I’ve been able to take them since I starting visiting this board.

My regimen did sound bad but my hair actually looked good doing this stuff because I kept it moisturized, that Petrolatum and Mineral Oil had it looking good. I wouldn’t always use those types of products but I didn’t care if I did like I do now. Since I've come to hair boards I've found that I spend more money on hair products and in all honesty, I don't need them. I’ve cut things out so I should not be spending more money on products, there is a problem here.

I love the advice but I have to remember that I don't have to try everything and every product that's mentioned. It's very stressful trying to get a hold of every product that is raved about and we know stress is bad for the hair. I’m new to message boards even though I’ve had a computer with internet access for over 7 years. I never thought about communicating with well strangers (in a way) in this manner until 5 months ago.

The best products that have worked for me were always products that I simply went into the beauty supply store, went home and gave it a try and it worked wonders on my hair. I’ve got to get back to those days. The other day, I found a wonderful, inexpensive product with great ingredients that I found the old fashioned way, it’s now a staple.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I am stiil trying to figure things out, but here are the few I have incorporated, that I love:

<ul type="square"> [*]learned that oil treatments can be done with oils from the grocery store, and actually work better with these [*]I learned to modify my no-poo with a shampoo every 2 weeks, because of product buildup(thanks Monicurl) [*]I didn't know the difference between protein and moisturizing conditioners. [*]I learned to always use a leave-in [*]I learned what ingredients are bad for my hair and now I read product ingredient lists [/list]

That's all I have for now

Isn't that the truth!

I have found that mayonnaise, honey, apple cider vinegar, eggs, olive oil and avocado have been working better than a lot of expensive natural products that I have purchased that wasn't even as natural as they claimed to be.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I'd probably still be going to the salon once a week.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Great thread! I'd be washing my hair every 2-3 weeks. With mizani shampoo (which doesn't do crap for my hair)
"Deep conditioning" for 5-10 mins w/ heat with cholesterol.. never using a proetin treatment
using no leave in or heavily diluted infusium
rooler setting and using the curling iron whenever i wanted to renew my curls
Using pink lotion and WGO for maintenance in bewtween

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I like this thread!
mineral oil, petroleum-bad ingredients? i definitely didn't know that (i am sure that just about every product that i have used of the 20 years of my life had mineral oil or petroleum in it-better to find out now than when i am 40
smile.gif
)

Biotin? never heard of it. I didn't believe anything could grow your hair (thought growth products were scams) or that you could control your hair growth.

I used to do hot oil treatments, but i didn't realize how important it was. Only when my mother bought VO5 I would use it, it wasn't a consistent thing.

I definitely had a detangling comb and a regular comb, but now i only comb my hair with wide tooth combs at all times.

I didn't realize that you had to have a reconstructor/protein treatment in your regimen. I used to use ORS Hair Mayonnaise when I was in 10th grade, but didn't realize it was a protein conditioner ( i just remember my hairdresser telling me everytime i came to my touch ups that my hair was dry). I never knew about reconstructors/protein treatments so therefore i didn't know that you had to follow it up with a moisturizing conditioner. By my senior year of high school, i found out about Keracare reconstructor, but i left it up to the hairdressers to decide when they thought it was appropriate to use. Now I have to say as a sophomore in college i definitely know more about protein/reconstructor conditioners from this board than I had my whole entire life.

Really loving this thread.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Without this board, I wouldn't be taking nearly as many supplements!

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

he he, daviine, you got me on that one.
but i'm about to get my hair colored this coming friday in brown-black with my bigen powder.
i will never bleach it again, at least that's what i say now. but i won't stop putting color in my hair, and since bigen is a natural hair powder i will be okay. i don't think i will relax my hair any longer either. the last time was 19 dec 02. so if i don't relax anymore and have some more growth i will probably experiment more with color again.
i'm impressed, i really like when people pay attention to what you actually write in your posts.

Nay007 based on your pics I think dark hair fits you. I hope that helps when you consider bleaching it again lol... happy growing!

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Great topic BRH!!!

Without this board, I would not have SUPPORT!!! Because no one cared or understood my concern/obssession for long healthy beautiful hair!!

My hair was ALWAYS ALWAYS dry, no matter what I did. I always did hot oil treatments and deep conditions, but with the wrong products. I would grease or moisturize my hair only when it *looked* dry, not *before* it became dry.
crazy.gif

I would comb and brush my hair roughly without sectioning my hair first and taking my time.

I would let my friends experiment on my hair with curling irons and long after it had been freshly washed...
blush.gif

I didn't have a clue about the difference between a moisturizing and protein conditioner. I used either and didn't understand the importance of using both.

I switched products like I changed clothes because I thought the product was supposed to make my hair healthy and not me.

I didn't have enough information!!!!
frown.gif
There weren't enough sources.

I wouldn't be as bad of a PJ. I would pick up things randomly to try. Now I come with a list and still do my random shopping!
laugh.gif

I always took vitamins, but I didn't take hair vitamins such as GNC Nourishair. I also didn't know about MSM and Biotin.

I wouldn't know about conditioner washes or braidouts or the many methods of airdrying..
smirk.gif

Lastly.....Can I say support and understanding again? I don't think I emphasized that enough..
grin.gif

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

I'd still be using no-lye kiddie perms (every 10 weeks)

Washing my hair once a week (Pantene Shampoo and Conditioner)

I've always rinsed my hair in the shower after workouts and airdried in a ponytail.

My leave-in was infusium (good choice)

I would not be taking ANY vitamins

I wouldn't be deep conditioning

I wouldn't be doing hot-oil treatments

I didn't know the difference btwn a protein and moisturizing conditioner

My protein conditioner was mayo and egg about 2x in 2 months.

Once a week I would blowdry and hotcurl. The rest of the time was always ponytails for me.

AND I'd probably still be using Pink Oil moisturizer

This board has truly educated me...I feel so enlightened
grin.gif

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

ArmyQt--what is the difference in your hair since you stopped using no-lye kiddie perms?

I'm wondering if my hair can't take the lye or what becasue I can't seem to get my hair under control.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s inf

Pumpkin,

I still do wrapping but the its the frequency that's changed. Before it was night in night out, month in month out with no break. NOW I do a rollarset once or twice a week and the rest of the month is air dried with a braid out. Cutting down on wrapping has improved the thinness issue I was starting to get before. That combined with taking B5, and just realizing the hair benefits from the 'leave it alone' principle.

I am coming to BBQ's and will see you there. Don't forget your username!!!

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s inf

I've never experienced thinning with wrapping. I didn't realize that it might not be a good thing to do.

Lala,

Some people find that their hair gets thinner when they constantly wrap it and I was one of those. I still wrap but MUCH less often than I used to before which has made a huge difference. There are alot of girls though who aren't affected by wrapping and your lucky

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Daviine, my hair suffered alot from dryness when i was using the no-lye (hence the thick Pink Lotion). No matter what I did, even air drying, my hair was always dry looking. Since switching to Lye and incorporating the mehtods learned here on this board, my hair has done a 360. Oh, and just to be fair, I think the use of the blowdryer weekly contributed immensely to my dry hair problem.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s inf

I would shed still be shedding like a cat, and I probably be on my way to complete baldness.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s inf

Brownrelaxedhair, thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll just try putting it up at night and see how that works for me.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

Let's see I would probably still be using a small tooth comb to go through my wet hair. Relaxing the front of my hairline like every 4 weeks! Oh and trimming every 4-6wks when I only get about an 1/2 inch per month. I hate to say it but even after this board I still made a big mistake and highlighted my hair, now I am experiencing BREAKAGE! So now I am saying no to highlighting.

Re: What would your regime be w/o this board\'s info?

My hair would be 1" long because I would chop my hair off around 1:00 a.m., just "whack, whack whack!", because I was fed up with it being "ugly!!!! I hated in between stages and of course it was always in between. Hair either had to be long or short! Because it is naturally thick, I felt like a shapeless pompom head with in between hair! I still consider it short, so obviously the boards have had a positive effect on me, since I have not "whacked at it" for over two years. I consider below bra strap length to be long and I still have to fight the urges to "do something"...what I do not know, but I think of all the other ladies patiently hanging in there and it just keeps me hopeful. That is why I stay "obsessive" about growing it. Once I decide to not do that...look out!!!
