Since ingredients and not the brand name or price or anything are obviously the most important thing in hair products, I was wondering, what exactly are the ingredients to look for in shampoos and conditioners?. It seems I recall an earlier post on this but I can't find it so if anyone would bump it (or I could be entirely mistaken) I would appreciate it. Thank you!

I use organic and more natural shampoos and conditioners. But if you want to look for ingrdients like Kerecare and Nexxus...many shampoos have SLS and that is very drying to your hair...watch out...I've been using shampoos with SLS in it, before and it did make my hair very dry but it was terrible...also watch out for mineral oil, I was reading that this cam clog the pores in your scalp but I am not really sure you can definitely research...

Sosly,

I prefer moisturizing conditioners that have some protein in it. This is okay for frequent use (weekly- 2X weekly) on the hair because it's formulated to be a moisturizing treatment and not ahardcore protein treatment.

I agree that you should avoid SLS, as it is drying, and mineral oil, since it can clog your hair folicles and slow hair growth. Petrolatum can do the same thing. I think that it is another version of mineral oil (someone can correct me if I'm wrong). I also stay away from silicones, since I don't use shampoo anymore and it can build up on your hair.

I read the labels to hair products more than labels on food! lol
I look for products with natural ingredients
(these ingredients must be listed 1st NOT last in the ingredient listing)
If I can't say the word or if I have difficulty saying the word, more than
likely it's an ingredient that I'd rather not put in my hair!
I just started using Aubrey Organics (All natural w/No synthetics)
products and I am very happy with the results!

I was thinking about trying the Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner but the SLS is one of the first ingredients. Is it ok to use? If not, can someone recommend another type of Shampoo and Conditoner that does not contain SLS but also helps thin hair?

I'm going to sound like THE broken record but Lanza protein plus shampoo is supposed to help strengthen weaker, more fragile hair (like chemically relaxed hair is susceptible to be from the processing). I think you'd be pleased with it. Its a good 'conditioning' shampoo and doesn't leave the hair thicker but definitely stronger feeling (esp; with repeated use). The protein level in it (very small) should help thin hair I would think too.

It has no sls in it and is ph balanced. Get the original formula one in light blue bottle. Okay enough, someone shut me up please
