What kind of Round Brush are you using?

Are these dangerous for hair?

I ask because my BF's sister (white lady) got a nice hair cut about a year ago and her hair has not grown AT ALL in that year although she has not had anymore hair cuts. I even notice that her ends look rough. I always wondered what she was doing wrong.

Then I saw her blowdrying her hair with a HUGE roundbrush. She does it a couple of times a week, too.

It made me scared of those things.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions either.

In a couple of weeks, I'm getting my hair straightened for the first time since growing out my relaxer. Going to a new shop and the stylist says she can use a round brush on me.... (we'll see! I hope so!:perplexed:look:)

So this is the round brush she showed me (it's an Aveda concept salon):

I am not sure if they are dangerous, so maybe someone can chime in let me know. I only want to use one for my roots instead of flat ironing them like Macherieamour did on her tutorial. I plan to buy the dvd soon, so maybe I can watch that and find out.

Okay, I saw her DVD. She is doing it just for the roots? My BF's sister goes all the way down the length of her hair and pulls to get it straight and give her hair volume. But she is really breaking her hair off in the meantime. Her hair looks very thin to me.

Okay these look less dangerous. :drunk:

The one she uses looks like this:

The one I posted has the brushes sticking out on the ends like this one, only they're white. I felt them. They felt a little stiff .... the stylist explained that the Aveda brush is ceramic.

Well on the tutorail yes she is only doing it for the roots, but I havent seen the dvd yet.

Wow I couldnt imagine doing it on my whole head. :nono: Over a period of time it does seem like it will thin the hair.

I happend to see a ceramic one at walmart that was $9.99, so maybe I will go back and get that one.

:nono: Girl her hair does not look good. My hair was shorter than hers after she got it cut. (BTW, the stylist told her that she really needed a cut because of damage to her ends - DUH! Step away from the blowdryer!) Anyway, now my hair is longer than hers and she told me that she has not had anymore hair cuts!

I do like the way that Macherie does it. She does not pull the brush through the hair at all - just uses it to make the roots kinda taut so that you can blow the roots out.

I have two, 1 small and 1 large. They are both made of boar's bristle. I think that these are less damaging to the hair than the hard nylon bristles. However, I just use them now to smooth my edges a little and blow out my roots. I don't use them on the whole length of my hair.

Thanks. I only want to use for the roots. Using on the whole length isnt good IMO.:nono:

I use a Conair one that I got from Target for like $12. I love it. It seems to be very gentle on my hair.

I have that Aveda one, and umm, :nono:. I guess it depends on your hair and how you use it, but my hair does not like that thing.

Y'all are scaring me with those pics!!! Just tear your hair out why don't ya!! :nono:

These are the types of brushes that are safe for our hair:

Macherieamour uses a brush like the one on the far right. Note that there are plastic balls on the ends of the bristles. If you have thick hair, these are the kind that will work for you.

I have fine hair, and use the 2 brushes in the middle. The tiny one (Spornette brand from Sally's) is what I use on my roots for blowing out after rollersets. Please note that these are SOFT bristle boar brushes. You can wrap your hand around the brush and it will give very well and not hurt the hand. I've got the other, firmer bristled brushes and they TEAR the hair out :perplexed

ETA: The 2 brushes on the left I got from Target (Conair); the 2 on the right from Sally's.

I have the exact same ones except the first one. I never use the last one though, it caused breakage to my hair.

You're welcome, Vevster :)

I also have some tips on how to use the round brush if you wanted to use it all over the hair (rather than just roots only) in my LHCF journal...

I've never used that brush you posted. I've only used the vent brush, or the kind I posted earlier, with no ill effects.

I personally would be more comfy using a paddle or vent brush...For getting the hair straight (with no curl on the end).

I did a search on this site for the brush I showed and it got a couple of thumbs up! I just want to blow out my ever increasing roots...

I'm afraid of round brushes cause one move in the wrong direction and you have tangles....

I used the first brush on a friend of mine (Asian - 1b) and I made the mistake of twirling it in her hair and it got stuck  I use that last brush on another friend (Black - 4a) and it works fine.

So yeah, you have to be careful. If only using it to blow out the roots the way Macherieamour shows in her DVD and/or site, you should be fine. I like the tiny BB round brush b/c it gets my roots straighter later in relaxer cycle. I use the plastic brush earlier in relaxer cycle (b/c I don't have much NG)

The only way you would get tangles from the round brush is if you were trying to roll the ends around the brush. If you're just going over your roots, you should be fine :) You just run the brush over the roots, slightly rotating it in the roots to get a straighter result.

Good luck!! :)

i'm using "Conair Velvet Touch Brush" - made to blow-dry, styling short to medium length hair of ALL TEXTURES:

I have one like the first one...its by conair and I got it at big lots for $2 woohoo lol. Im looking for a reasonably priced soft boar bristle one bc I think it will get my roots straighter during my stretch. Lately I dont even bother and just wrap bc within a day or two they are back to normal so I might as well not even bother with the extra heat. The saran wrap trick gets it straight enough. I would still blow my roots out if I had somewhere important to go or a special occasion though.

Thanks so much for posting this picture and giving info about each brush. I have been looking for a soft boar bristle round brush and one with the plastic balls on the ends. I will definately go to Sally's and purchase some.
