What is the first sign a product doesn't work?

this is a spinoff of the product black list post.

So when could you tell that the product was NOT working?

Could you tell the product was not working when...

  • your hair was wet/dry
  • a few days after using the product
  • after you finished the bottle and/or used another product
  • what specific change did you notice in your hair
  • what did you have to do to correct it?
  • other???

That's a lot of random questions but please share your experiences and also refresh us on what product it was that you blacklisted.

I will give you the old tried and true consulting answer.......IT DEPENDS! :)

It depends on the product, what it should do and what state my hair is in wet or dry.

Sorry that answer is vague but as an example if I am using a leavin moisturizer and it says you can use it for wet and dry hair I will give it a few days and try it on wet hair and dry hair just to see how it works.

For a conditioner I may know if it works for me as soon as a do a rinse or after a deep condition or a braid or twist session.

An oil may be a matter of one day if I use it on my ends or my scalp.

Sometimes it could be just a smell or texture of a product that immediately I cannot get pass the smell or the texture and will wash or rinse it out immediately.

Like I stated before for me it really does depend. HTH

I know immediately. My hair is really picky and will turn to straw as soon as something it doesn't like comes in contact :perplexed Hard, stiff, difficult to detangle, lose lots of hair detangling.... These are all signs that my hair hates a product

It depends.
But usually you are using a product and looking for positive results (luster, improved strength, body)

When the product gives you negative results, that means it didn't work.

I haven't had much luck with products. Just Hot Six Oil.

ITA! Also I expect the product to do what it says on the bottle/package, if it says 'moisturizing' and my hair ends up feeling like hay after using it, it doesn't work in my opinion. I always give shampoos, conditioners and hair masks a few chances before nixing them, but styling products: nope.

I would think, not being happy with the results would be a sure fire sign the prod didnt work as expected. Sometimes, we use so many prods at one time, we dont even really get to see if a prod works as an individual.

LOL! That is EXACTLY how my hair is! It will be like WTF! U thought u could just put some ol' bull in and think I wouldnt notice?? Naw, naw sista. LOL! When I put in too much protein, I felt lik my hair went clean the f off on me. It was hard, stiff, very straw like, && just wouldnt cooperate.

You don't like the way your hair "feels" after using it.

I don't care how great it's supposed to be, you can tell if something's working for you or not. Speaking of which, I have some stuff in my closet I've been holding onto, even though I know that mess doesn't work.

I judge a product by how it feels on wet hair. If my wet hair does not detangle at ALL, then my dry hair will be that much more of a nightmare.

If my scalp feels slippery while wet, chances are my hair will look too flat on top but poofy on the bottom.

If my hair is manageable while wet, then my hair will likely be manageable while dry as well.

I don't use products on dry hair unless I am planning on rinsing them out. The closest I get to working with my dry hair is when I put olive oil serum in damp hair. Hope this helps!

For me, its all in how it spreads. If it foams up when I massage the conditioner in, its a keeper.

I think it's about how it makes my hair feel immediately. For instance, I just found out that my hair doesn't like any butters because they always make my hair dry.

But I also think it's how it makes my hair feel long term. For instance if if a conditioner says that it strengthens the hair, I'll expect some immediate results, which is usually what happens, but I would also expect noticeability of continuous strengthening. It should get stronger the more you use it.

If your hair looks worse than before the product and if your hair is harder to deal with after the product then chances are the product is no good for you. For me I have had tangles and straw like hair from products that were just not meant for me.
