Why the heck not? Gosh some people. I am so sorry about your experiences. I was tearing up at points. I grewe my hair out with braids so I know the struggle.

What is the dumbest thing a stylist has done to your hair? The dumbest thing I have had happen was a stylist had ordered ribs before applying my touch up. Well as the ribs were delivered girlfriend decided to go in the back and proceed to eat and talk on the phone. After about 15 minutes the nape of my neck started burning and I kindly got up out of the chair, walked myself over to the wash station and proceeded to rinse my relaxer out while seated. The shop manager walked by close to ten minutes later as I was still rinsing upside down and sideways in the chair. She screams out loud 'who has a client rinsing their own HAIR!!!!!! The stylist came strolling [not running, I mean stroooooolllling out, with the phone still in her hand, and has the nerve to say to me, WHY YOU PUT ME ON FRONT STREET?!!!

I was not trying to get anyone in trouble, but we all now it only takes 20 minutes to grow from growing hair to rubbing a stubbly scalp......

I wanted my hair braided so I called a braid shop and made an appointment for 7:00 a.m. When I got there the girl started right away. About 3 rows into my hair, she excused herself and said she's be right back. 15 mins. went by 30 mins. went by. The other operators were looking at me because they sense my agitation. I got up and went in the back and that heifer was sitting at the shampoo bowl knocked out sleep. I told her sister who worked there to tell her that I was leaving. As I was gathering my things she came running out telling me that she was up the night before braiding until 2:00 a.m. and she just needed a little nap. I didn't spend my money on great hair and her expertise in braiding to end up with jacked up hair due to her being sleepy.

Have you ever noticed that they are soooo generous with the relaxer[even though you want a touch up] and yet sooooo stingy with the neutralizer and deep conditioner, hhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm?

I've noticed this as well. Makes ya wonder if they are trying to keep clients dependent on them via "sabotage."

I'm sorry you had to endure that. At least now you've got the knowledge to maintain wonderful, healthy hair. Most of us have had hair horror stories, I know I can relate.

Flat ironing my hair and trying to eat greasy fries and chicken at the same time.
Needless to say I gave her the "no you won't fool" stare and she went to wash her hands and come right back to my hair.

3-4 yrs ago i went to my mom's hair stylist thinking he would wash and lightly trim my hair. it was during the summer and i had soo much new growth. my hair would have been at least at bra strap had it been retouched.so he washes my hair then takes a blow dryer and a fine touch comb and starts ripping through my hair to detangle it. i was pissed. then the **** tells me my hair is damaged and needs to be trimmed cause thats the reason it gets all tangled up. and i'm thinking you just washed my hair piling it up on top of my head, you use no detangler then you go on to use a fine tooth comb and you wonder why it's tangled. so then he takes one of his hair books which has DRAWINGS and not even real model's hairs and shows me a DRAWING of a woman with thick, even hair and tells me thats how my hair SHOULD look. so he trims and trims and trims till it's shoulder length.i was 15-16 at the time so i didnt have any guts to say anything to him i just left, went home and started crying. i truly hated that man!! if i could do hings over i would cuss him the freak out!!!!!!

I HATE HAIR STYLISTS

Aaliyah, he blew it dry because he kept wetting my hair when he was ripping the braids out. The other girl would soak them and they would just slide out. I guess he didn't want to put the relaxer on wet hair.

Anyway, I plan not to have anymore stories like that...thanks to you guys...thanks to this board...and not without a lot of prayer and patience.

cutebajangirl...she didn't want me going to her hairdresser she said because of "salon gossip". But, to tell you the truth, the other ladies that I met that go to this same hairdresser all kind of act like that. Like they found someone good and they don't want to share her. They had like a "clique" going. They would all go out to dinner, for drinks, shopping. The hairdresser was young but my co-worker told me that she had been going to her for several years since she was in high school, before she got her license. But they are all very, very secretive about her.

Willow Violet,

I feel you girl! Thats reason #2 why I'm not going to that scissor happy woman anymore. She never and I mean NEVER did my hair the way I wanted it. I'd say I wanted small flat twists and then I'd end up with these huge things in my head. I'd say do NOT make my hair BIG, and it'd look like a giant afro puff. She pulled the mother of all f-ups, before easter. I wanted an updo, this woman tried to do pincurls, and that mess looked like a giant TOWER, it was ugly and fuzzy, and I took it down the next day.

OMG! Perhaps if you told her the opposite of what you meant, the backwards broad would've understood what you were saying!!

wash my hair ( without using conditioner afterwards), then using undiluted lottabody setting lotion on my hair to roller set, then roughtly brushing my dry hair afterwards( ripping all sorts of hair out)

I had a cosmetology teacher put Windex on my hair instead of the Dudley's Setting Lotion she was supposed to use.
crazy.gif
She tried to play it off but I found out what happened a year or so later by one of her students.

How did the set come out btw?

When I was about 16 yrs old I went to the hair dresser the day after I relaxed my hair to get tracks, anyway to make a long story short The tracks were a different color so my brilliant hair dresser decided that I should dye the hair that was being left out which is the top middle, mind u I had just relaxed the previous day, Within a two month period I had no hair at all in the middle of my head which is usually the longest. I was so mad at my self but I realize now that I ws 16 and clueless and this woman who was in her early thirties with a liscence should of known better

I have a couple of stories...

The first is when I used to get a jeri curl, I didn't know it (I was only 14 at the time), but she NEVER conditioned my hair. My hair was long, almost to mid-back, aand ver thick. Well, one day, after she put the curl in and when I looked in the mirror and you could see though my hair!! I went home and cried my eyes out and never went bsck. When my cousin saw my hair, she offered to go up to the shop and beat her up for me, but my mom talked her out of it.

The second was when I went to this beauty college (a BIG NO-NO) to get my hair done. I had a relaxer at this time and my hair was almost bra-strap. I wanted a touch-up and a Pebbles cut (Like Pebbles the former singer). Well this chick burned my head and cut it up to just above my shoulders!! And it was shorter on one side! I was in a rush, so I went home, saw my hair and screamed!! I went back up there determined to give that broad a buttwhoopin'. Well, she saw me running up the street towards her, so she ran across the street and jumped on a bus to get away from me.

It didn't. When she tried to comb my hair it was a tangled mess. She rinsed and then deep conditioned it (I was charged extra for this mind you) after ripping a lot of my hair out. She stated that it must be like that because of the last person that relaxed my hair. I didn't really think that was the cause since I had done my hair myself after my last relaxer. It took a number of weeks of deep conditioning my hair before it was back to normal.

Oh my gosh Tigerlily that is too funny! Too bad you didn't catch her! Well if anyone read my post entitled "i wish she would just shut-up" then ya'll know all about my burnt scalp, crap talking salon experience. I'm too thru with stylist.. and now you guys have scared me further into never stepping foot in one again.

A few years ago my mom took me to her hair dresser. This lady screwed me over. She washed my hair with some sort of dominican almond shampoo... but this wasn't a dominican shop. I just know the smell of the shampoo.

Then she put some kind of hair mayo in for like 10 minutes without a cap. She rinsed me out and blowdried my hair with some kind of stinky blue pressing oil.

She then HOT COMBED my hair and added more pressing oil.

Then she HOT CURLED my hair and added MORE pressing oil.

I didn't need such a hot press or anything because I was texturized and I have curly hair that doesn't need too much heat to get straight. In fact it doesn't need any heat to get straight.

And I didn't ask her to curl my hair either. Just wanted a simple press.

She burned my scalp in three places and my hair looked like a grease pit. It wasn't even bouncy, it just hung there like blah. I'm serious, the back of my shirt had grease stains in it. It smelled like she bbq'd my poor hair too. People from blocks away could see me because of the shine that my hair had when the sun reflected off of it.

The funny thing is that everybody in the shop, including my mother loooved my hair. It was like the twilight zone

I went home and washed my hair about 4 times and slept with conditioner in my hair overnight and rinsed it out in the morning.

When I was washing it I found out that this ***** burned one section in the nape of my head to about 3 inches too

That's when i started doing my own hair.

Hello Ladies,

I am new to the community and I have enjoyed reading and learning about black hair care.. I have to admit, I a so relieved to know that there are others out there who love talking about and caring for their hair..

Ok, the dumbest thing a hair stylist did.. I went to salon for a relaxer. After applying the relaxer, the hair stylist decided to wrap my hair with saran wrap and put me under the dryer. Yes, saran wrap and a hooded dryer! The things we go through!

Well..he didnt get to do it because i laughed in his face, but a "professional" told me 2 months ago that i should cut all my hair off into the infamous bob cut /images/graemlins/huh.gif

i met this stylist on the street (clue 1) who liked my hair and told me how she was really into hair health and care, blah, blah, blah... so i gave her a try. on my second visit to her, she decides that she wanted to loosen my curls with some type of relaxer/texturizer. (clue 2) but get this...she then roller sets it with small rollers! so basically, she attempted to relax my curls so that she could put MORE curls in my hair! /images/graemlins/nuts.gif

I met a stylist while I was in line at Wendy's. (Mandarin Chicken Salad /images/graemlins/lick.gif ) She had a Serena/Venus cat hair weave (for this reason alone I would never let her near my head...). She asked me if I had a texturizer and I said no. She asked me if I wanted her to give me a texturizer. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif Again, I said no. I told her how my hair broke off almost three years ago, I'm afraid of chemicals, etc.

She then tells me that quite a few of her clients are experiencing breakage on top of their heads and how she doesn't know what going on. /images/graemlins/huh.gif

Let me get this straight. Her own hair looks like who did it and ran. Her clients are losing their hair and she hasn't figured out why, but she still wants to give me a texturizer? /images/graemlins/whyme.gif

Well actually, I never really had a bad experience because I stopped frequenting a shop at age 14 because I was a budding stylist *lol* and did my own. However, during my days as a stylist I saw many things that should have been jail-able offenses /images/graemlins/whip.gif:
Using marcel irons w/o testing ( a LOT of burned hair)
Burns as a result of handling tools with hands coated in oil, pomades, wax, etc
No-lift colors applied with 20 vol. developer
Peroxide rinses for gray hair (repeatedly on same clients)
Gross relaxer overlap and application with metal combs
I could go on and on ... I didn’t get to see the long term results of a lot of these incidents, but I can just imagine.

So, I was going to this hairstylist who suggested gluing a track of hair in my head for easier maintanance. Okay...not bad. I wore them for a few months or so.

What was bad was when I was went in for a retouch w/ the tracks still in. Previously, she was able to take the glue out with just some oil because the glue had worn away naturally. This time, the glue was still on there pretty securely. So, instead of telling me I should wait, she proceeds to try and rip the tracks out!!! /images/graemlins/angry2.gif Then....when that didn't work....she decided to USE THE RELAXER TO GET THE GLUE TO WEAR DOWN!!! /images/graemlins/swearing.gif Gosh, I didn't know anything about overprocessing or hairstylists who don't really care about your hair, so I just let her do it. No wonder my hair was so thin and frail before. /images/graemlins/nono.gif
