this may be of no use but........I prepoo w/ Amla Oil the night before my monday wash and the amla oil keeps my hair soft after I shampoo & condition: I also prepoo the night before (if I don't have nothing to do the following morning) before a wash then baggy: I'll apply a DC (Aubrey Organic Cons) on my ponytail and seal it w/ oil (to stop the con from drying) and in the morning I'll apply some more conditioner to the rest of my hair as directed.

when you ladies pre-poo, do you also deep condition after the wash, or is that overkill?

lucy, i deep condition as well...and i'ma go on a limb and say that most other people do too?

ok I have a question
I put the oil on my hair before the conditioner to pre poo than i rinse out and wash 1 once than put on my deep conditioner

it this wrong?
should i mix the oil in with the conditioner?

Oh and the purpose of prepooing is 1. to counteract the effects of a drying shampoo (sulfates). Sulfates in shampoos strip the hair and the pre-poo adds a bit of moisture to the hair so tha it won't be (too) stripped. and 2. to aid in detangling. Some people find that their comb outs (especially me) are a lot better if they prepoo before hand.

This is the reason why I pre-poo when I'm 5 wks plus post relaxer. I pre-poo with Amla oil. I like it better than pre-pooing with a conditioner. It appeared as if the conditioner caused alot of product buildup on my strands.

I started pre-pooing as a convenince. I didn't have time to poo and then condition. So I just did it backwords...conditioner w/oil and bag for about 30 minutes--then I jumped in the shower to poo and put a leave-in condish. My hair saw major moisture improvement once I began doing this.

I pre-poo with a pre-poo treatment from Aveda---Sap Moss Concentrate.
I also pre-poo with conditioner--Abba Moisture Scentsation. They are both the best products for pre-pooing for my hair. Love them.

ETA* I also add Jojoba or Coconut Oil with these conditioners. I've found that pre-pooing just makes my hair better overall. I've only been doing it for a couple of months now but I can tell there is some benefit. My hair breaks less, it has a healthy natural shine, I get no dryness between washes (I wash twice a week). I'm happy I started pre-pooing and I will likely keep doing it.

My hair is softer and feels less dry when I pre-poo. I vary betweeen using just oil, oil+conditioner, or a henna gloss. It is an extra step but my hair thanks me for it and it doesn't always make wash day longer. Sometimes I oil heavily in the morning, bun my hair for the day, and wash the following day. (I have noticed some of my N. African workmates doing this too on the sly.) Obviously oil+conditioner pre-poo and henna glosses have to be done when you don't have to go out. Unfortunately, because the water is so hard here, I do have to deep condition after washing.

Remember though, depending on the overall condition of your hair, the environment (weather and water) you may not need to pre-poo. Try it 2-3 times. If you don't see a difference in the state of your hair, drop this step.

Thanks Denvergirl for bringing this up. I'm still trying to understand the purpose and benefits of pre-shampooing the hair.

I had the same question when I first heard of prepoo. My first time prepooing, I noticed that my hair immediately became silky, which helps keep my detangling down to a minimum during my shampoo session.

I also like that I can get 2 deep conditioning treatments in one setting: My prepoo focuses on protein (ORS Hair Mayo with Mango Butter or Vatika oil) and my deep conditioning focuses on moisture (Biolage Cera Repair Hydratherapie). I shampoo and condition Aveda SI but I know that it kind of like Kerastase Oleo Relax, where it's geared towards taming the hair, but not necessarily treating the hair for a protein or moisture imbalance.

So, I guess my prepoo is more for functional reasons, as I don't like combining a bunch of product together hoping for optimum results.

I like pre-pooing with oil before my washes. I have tried pre-pooing with conditioner (sleeping with conditioner in my hair, overnight) and this left me with overmoisturised hair - it was too soft. But sleeping with oil overnight is just right - I get just enough moisture this way.
I use olive oil and love it! Apparently it penetrates deep into the hair shaft. I notice that my hair feels more together when I use this oil for some reason.

i voted for both.

last year my focus was oil on the night before my poo, but it didn't do much.

i also tried the dc, and saw a bit more results.

but when i use both, i love my hair the next day!

And nobody gets breakage from prepooing with oils overnight? I'm trying to figure out if I'm the only one... I get alot of stray hair when applying the oil.

I know thisw post is old, but great point Miss*tress!

Wouldnt the shampoo just rinse everything away?? And what if you hair is already dry when you put the oils in? Then all the oils is doing is preventing moisture. I just dont get prepooing with anything. Seems like a bit a waste of product to me. Hey but if it works for you guys then happy growing. I will, however, try this once just to see if im apart of that group.

Question: I'm going to clarify on Sunday, so should I try pre-pooing (for the first time) because the clarifier may dry out my hair? or would that defeat the purpose of clarifying and coat my hair anyway?
