It varies doesn't it. You can have a setback due to so many things, the few I can think of are:-

- Being at the hands of no good stylists who trims off all of your progress
- Not enough moisture or protein
- Heat abuse
- Over manipulating hair
- Incorrect use of products

Applying a technique or new know-how without a sufficient foundation of knowledge into all aspects of whatever the technique or product is.

And related to this, simply trying something new, because much of that foundation / additional knowledge has to be learned by experience.
