I think carson/loreal should get their butts sued off for this. I read that even the manufacturers of relaxers are fully aware that they are the most caustic styling agent on the market. They sell us this stuff knowing how dangerous it is, how it eats away at our hair, makes it dry and brittle, damages the scalp, kills the follicles. That's why black girls don't have any hair as it is and are running around at 10 with weaves because they momma been relaxing their hair since 5 and it's all short and broken off. To say that carson isn't responsible is like saying its ok for cigarette companies to withold information regarding the dangers of smoking. It is illegal to withold information about potential dangers from the consumer, that's why the cigarette companies lost their lawsuits. Carson knows full well that neutralizers are needed. If their instructions did not state to use a neutralizer, they are 100% responsible for what happened to this woman. Let's quit blaming the victim here and hold these companies responsible. They don't market chemicals this dangerous to white girls. That's why they still have hair and we don't.
ITA!

How horrible, tragic, terrible, sad, unbelieveable...*running out of words*
It's really making me think. Man! That could've been me...

Health is definiently more important.

I learned something interesting at the BSS store today that might explain why this woman's scalp burned so bad. I was looking for neutralizing shampoo and I saw that the Affirm (that is the relaxer I use) normalizing shampoo was $18.99-$15.99 while some of the other lines with the same size were $5.99. I even saw a small (not as small as the size that you get in the kit, but smallish-mediumish) Isoplus (I think this is the brand) neutralizing shampoo for 99 cents.

Me being the cheapskate that I am, I asked the guy at the BSS if I could get oneof the cheaper brands. He told me no, it's best to use the neutralizing shampoo that matches your relaxer. It was AGAINST his interests to tell me this, because they had run out of Affirm neutralizing shampoo and I had to go to another BSS to buy it.

So, even if this sister had HAD a bottle of neutralizing shampoo around the house, it may not have done her a lick of good -- she would have had to have had the SAME EXACT version that comes with the relaxer kit.

In that case, this might explain why they tried to give her tens of thousands of dollars to settle. Not having neutralizing shampoo in the kit is a huge omission.

I will say it again, this might be way Shampoosie warns against the kits in his book and says to buy everything seperately. I always found that the kits (I tried to self-relax once or twice and then stopped) did not have enough products in them for my hair. The bottle of neutralizing shampoo were so small, I always worried that it was not enough. For some reason the kits never seems to straighten my hair that well either.

Finally, the sad fact of the matter is that she could have gone to a stylist and still gotten her scalp burnt. This happened to me recently even though I spent a ton of money at an expensive salon. :ohwell:
