I will never forget it to this day:
I was 12 years old and had just gotten my first set of micro braids to start off the summer. I thought that I was fly. Long hair, don't care...all of that. Well, one day I went swimming and forgot to detangle it right away, so the next morning the hair was matted. My mom had to help me detangle the hair, and ended up having to cut a lot of it (none of it was my own hair though).
I was upset because I could no longer put the hair into a high ponytail/bun like I had been doing because most of the braids in the back were too short. So what did I decide to do? I went into my parent's bathroom, grabbed some scissors and started cutting off all of the braids (including MY HAIR) in the back of my head until I could fit the rest into that high ponytail. Oh, and to make matters worse, I grabbed my dads electric razor and shaved down MY HAIR in the back, to make it look nice and neat.
My mom freaked out when she saw what had happened, and immediately thought that the braids and chlorine had taken my hair out. I didn't realize how bad the damage was until her and my aunt started taking my braids out and I realized that I had NO HAIR in the back of my head!
My hair never fully recovered after that. My hair was APL before I shaved it, and afterward, it was hardly past shoulder length for years.
The story is hilarious looking back now, but during that time-frame, it was devastating, especially since I was beginning junior high in a few months and my mom was going crazy trying to figure out a way to help me cover up the damage I had caused.
