What hairstyles have you just NOT been able to master?

I consider myself pretty versatile with my hair, and rarely do I admit defeat when trying to work with a style. However, since the start of my HHJ there are two things I've tried and tried and tried without success.

1) Bantu Knot outs: I love the look a good BKO gives! Every single time I saw a successful one, I would try again. Wet, damp, dry hair, big ones, small ones, tight ones, loose ones, rubber banded or bobby pinned....it never came out right! I've tried a bunch of different tricks and I think I've finally just accepted that BKO's are a style I won't be rocking. :nono:

2) Twist outs: At first I thought braidouts were for relaxed women, twist outs are for naturals....but I've seen plenty of relaxed women with beautiful twistouts! I'm not sure what exactly goes wrong but instead of looking like natural curls, it LOOKS like I twisted my hair and then untwisted it. It just looks like I didn't finish the style! :nono:

Any tips? What about you ladies...any styles you just CAN'T get?

I've given up on bantu knots. Mine come out not uniform. And once after I tried I saw breakge start, no breakge b4 bantu knots, breakage after bantu knots. I guess it was too much manipulation or I wrapped it too tight. I dunno but it was too stressful for me and my hari.

I'm natural...

1. Braidouts - I tried dry, wet, single, cornrows, etc my hair looks a hot mess.

2. Bantu Knots - nope never look good.

3. Wash N' Go's - It's cute when wet; but once it dries, not so much. (Hopefully, this will change as my hair gets longer.

I cannot figure out how to do cornrows and flat twists. I tried cornrows again the other day and my friend was like :nono: you're not going to leave the house with those are you?

I have not combed hair in over 10 years as I have had braids, weaves etc on and off. Okay letta me take that back I have not tried to french braid or flat twist until this past Sunday. I learned how to frech braid as a child from my grandmother and I swear this past weekend I was looking at my hair and my fingers jsut could not get right. I have to practice french braids and flat twist so they look pretty because now both look a hot mess. I feel like I need to by me one of those head dolls I had back in the day and pratice on it, geeesh. The saying goes, "if you don't use it you lose it."

Wash n' Gos. No ma'am, can't do it. My hair just shrinks up and drys out. *sigh*
I can't do anything but braid or twist my hair. I seem to lose any capability to style my hair when it's loose but it has always been that way - relaxed or natural. I'm natural by the way.
I love braid outs though! I'm gonna try a twist out at the end of the week... let's see how that goes.

OP when you take your twists down how are you doing it? And where did you get that wig from in you avatar?

Hmm I can't do nothing! Even my buns & ponytails look bad. I am style challenged, but determined. I'm sticking to one style til I master it. Right now it's 2 twists - thats it 2 and I have a dang problem.

Cornrows, I have never "masted" it, but made it look decent for local trips (i.e. store, doing housework, errands) When I have children, I will practice on theirs,

I can't braid to save my life. I see people on here effortlessly doing these pretty cornrows and all I can is drool. All of my fingers turn into thumbs when I attempt to french braid. Sigh...some day!

I also can't rollerset. I plan on working on this over the summer though.

I cant do ANYTHING and it really bothers me. My buns/ponytails only look decent for a day, two at the most. I feel really stupid putting on cute clothes and my hair looks like Who Shot Farmer John so I rarely wear anything extravagant but that has to stop. My last resort is rods. Im certain I can put them in but my next issue will be how not to look like a Grandma or a shaggy dog.

The wig I got from my local BSS but it is available online. Its Freetress Equal "Sonya" in color #1B, $39.99. I love it...my first lace front wig!

I do my twists flat against my head, following the method Salon Calebo does in her tutorial. When I take them down, I use a little serum to prevent frizziness. But it just never looks natural.

I notice a lot of natural ladies, particularly type 4 cannot do WnGs. I can't imagine I would ever do it with my extreme shrinkage either! Cornrowing definitely takes practice as well...I can braid very well on OTHER people but I wouldn't leave the house with my own braids either!

well i find that i can do most styles if i set my mind to it but i cant say i have mastered anything except pressing

Flat twist... they come out a hawwwwt mess when I do them... also normal sized twist all around.. my front always looks a ham so I have to throw some cornrows in the front..

I think most things require practice. How about pincurls? Will those work for you? Half-wigs are a god send for my "oh em gee, what am I gonna do with my hair" days.

I can't say I have mastered anything. I have great ideas in my head but getting them on my head is a different story. My flat twists & 2 strand twists are looking better but getting them into a style that looks good is a different story.

I have an excellent twist out if I do mini twists. Otherwise no. Most styles I have never tried: bantu knot out, braid out, WNG, cornrows, twist outs from cornrows or flat twists

Fortunately I am used to walking around with my hair looking however it looks. And my friends and coworkers are used to me looking any kind of way. Otherwise I would have to wear a wig.

I am hoping that as my hair gets longer, it will be easier to style. One can hope.

Twists and flat twists. I've been trying for YEARS! But they don't look defined (like twisted ropes). They look more like furry locs and like my hair was done a month ago. I'm not sure what to do, as I've already asked for advice tons of times, youtube videos, ... Is it just not meant to be? lol

I really haven't mastered any styles. The number of styles I can do is a much shorter list than the ones I can't do.

I have somewhat mastered twist outs. I need to have my hair shaped. Once I do that then my twists out will look much better.

I can't get a good twist-out to save my life. I only got on good braid out but it didn't look like a braid out, it was just cute. My rollersets are thee "failiest".

Two strand flat twists and cornrows. Also a good braid out. I can do them, but when I try to do them on my own hair they look terrible. I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

EbonyCPrincess I do agree I probably give up too quick but when I invest time into a hairstyle that just doesnt work I rarely want to try again. :ohwell: Pincurls may actually work! I cant do the halfwigs :nono: I sweat heavily in my head

Can you post the link to this channel? Thanks!

Ok, as many have mentioned, it takes practice to get good. However, I still haven't mastered:
1) Flat twists: I have to do a couple then the rest start looking good. Then I have to redo the first couple
2) Rollersets: Ok, why can't I do this? I even have a DVD showing how to by Macherieamour of Healthytextures.com
